PROCESS on MAKING TILES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15, 1907.
ApplicatlOll filed May 4, 1907. Serial No- 371,893.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GONSTANTINOS H. GEANAKO- PULos, a subject of the Kingdom of Greece, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Process of Making Tiles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved process of making decorative tiling for floors or other purposes.
In the manufacture of tiling the different colored sections are made separately. They are made of clay or like substance and submitted to the action of a kiln. They are necessarily made thin as the colored substances are expensive and when so made are not substantial.
In my present process I make a complete design, comprising a plurality of colors, apparently made up of a number of tiles, each of different color, in one section.
The tile sections are made of a mixture of sand and cement and are formed in a mold containing a remov able l'orm composed of a series of connected partitions.
In the accompanying drawing in which Figure lis a plan view and Fig 2 a central cross-sectional view, I show a mold of rectangular form, indicated by the numeral l. Located loosely and removably therein I show a form 2 which predetermines the design of the tile section. This form comprises a series of vertical partitions 53 joined together and these partitions are tapered from top to bottom so that they will permit of easy withdrawal from the mold.
The process of manufacture is as follows:The desired form is placed in the mold and the spaces between the partitions 3 are partially filled up, usually about one-fifth of their depth, with a mixture of cement, fine sand and coloring matter, each space being filled with the desired color. The form is then withdrawn from the mold by means of any suitable handle or pin in the same manner as a pattern is drawn from the sand in molding. The mold is then filled up with a mixture of sand and cement of inferior quality and the mass subjected to severe pressure in a machine of suitable construction. This action will close up the small openings between the different colored portions caused by the withdrawal of the form, and cause the substance in the'different sections to adhere to each other while still retaining positively the division line, as to color. The surface is then treated to a coat of specially prepared varnish or dressing. This dressing is composed of boiled beeswax and linseed oil, to which is added a quantity of alcohol. The alcohol is added while the wax and oil are still hot, and while the entire mass is in the form of a paste, that is, before it has thoroughly cooled, it is applied to the surface of the tiles. This dressing is particularly penetrative and of such a nature that it produces a luster or highly polished appearance of a lasting quality, to the surface.
The section is then air dried in any suitable manner and when hardened is ready for use.
By my process the complete section is made in one operation and the result is a uniformity not obtainable where separate tiles are used.
The tile is substantial and durable, being of considerable thickness, while only a small portion of it is composed of high grade material, the main portion thereof being composed of common cement and sand while the face only is composed of high grade material;
and varied colors. I
The rapidity with which a floor may be laid with my .tile sections as well as the reduced cost thereof are quite evident.
It will be seen that any design or combination of colors may be used and that the sections may be made in any convenient size and shape. 7
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim and desire tosecure by Letters Patent is The process of making tile sections of varied colors, consisting of placing a removable form comprising a series of joined partitions in a mold, partially filling the spaces between said partitions with a mixture of high grade colored cement and sand, removing the form from the mold filling the mold with a mixture of sand and cement of inferior quality, subjecting the whole to severe pressure, applying to the face of said section a coating of specially prepared dressing composed of beeswax, linseed oil and alcoh l and drying by air.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CONSTANTINOS H. GEANAKOPULOS.
Witnesses J. DOVER, J oi-rN GREEN.
