Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVID LIPPY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrellas; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the numerals and figures of reference marked thereon, in which-.

Figure 1 is a view showing a portion of the umbrella frame and the ribs extended. Fig. 2 is a view showing the umbrella frame closed and illustrating parts in section. Fig. 3 is a view showing the staff and the parts belonging thereto disconnected.

The present invention has relation to umbrellas and it consists in the novel arrangement hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.

In the accompanying drawing, 1 represents the staff, which is of the usual construction to which staff is securely attached the rib head 2, which rib head is provided with the spaced flanges or arms 3, said flanges or arms being curved downward and are so curved for the purpose hereinafter described. The ribs 4 are provided with the elongated slots 5, which elongated slots are for the purpose of receiving the flanges or arms 3, said slots being formed of such size that a hinge connection will be provided between the ribs 4 and the arms 3, by which arrangement the frame of the umbrella can be extended as shown in Fig. -1, and closed as illustrated in Fig. 2.

For the purpose of holding the ribs 4 upon the arms 3 the movable sleeve 6 is provided, which movable sleeve is provided with the flanges 7, said flanges corresponding in number with the arms 3 and are spaced so that the top or upper ends of said flanges will register with the bottom or lower ends of the curved arms 3.

For the purpose of holding the sleeve 6 against rotation on the staff and at the same time guiding the sleeve so as to cause the arms 3 in the flanges '7 to register the pin 8 is provided, which pin is secured to the staff 1. The sleeve 6 is provided with the slot 9, which slot is formed of such a size that the pin 8 will be received in said slot when the sleeve 6 is elevated or brought into its normal position.

For the purpose of holding the sleeve 6 in its fixed and normal position the catch 10 is provided which catch is of the ordinary construction and common in umbrella construction, except in this instance the catch 10 is utilized to hold the rib retaining sleeve in position, said catch when in its normal position is located through the slot 11 formed in the sleeve 6. To the ribs 4 are pivotally attached the rib braces 12, the inner ends of said rib braces being pivotally attached to the arms 13, formed upon the runner 14. The braces 12 are provided with the elongated slots 15, by which arrangement the braces are free to turn upon the curved arms 13, when the umbrella frame is opened and closed.

For the purpose of holding the rib braces 12 in proper engagement with the curved arms 13, the runner 14 is provided with the screw threaded portion 16 upon which screw threaded portion is normally located the collar 17, which collar is substantially of the form shown, and as shown its top or upper end is adapted to be brought into contact with the bottom or lower ends of the curved arms 13, thereby preventing the rib braces 12 from becoming detached from the curved arms 13. The runner 14 is provided with the usual slot 18, which slot is for the purpose of receiving the ordinary catch 19 connected to the staff 1. The cap 20 is connected to the staff 1, in the usual manner.

It will be understood that by my peculiar arrangement I am enabled to easily detach the ribs and rib braces from the fixed rib head and the runner head by simply removing the sleeve 6 and the collar 17 at which time the ribs and the rib braces can be easily detached from the

5 and 15 that the ribs and the rib braces are free to move upon the

curved arms

3 and 13. The rib head 2 is secured to the staff 1 by means of the pin 21, and when the cap 20 is brought into position the pin will be held against displacement.

For the purpose of detaching the rib braces from the ribs, the ribs are provided with the flanges 22, and the rib braces provided with the hooks 23, by which arrangement all of the parts can be detached from each other.

Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is

1. in an umbrella, the combination of a staff, a fixed rib head provided with curved arms, a sleeve slidably mounted upon the staff, said sleeve provided with a slot and flanges, a pin secured to the staff, said pin adapted to guide the sleeve and ribs provided with elongated slots and the curved arms located through the elongated slots, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. In an umbrella, a combination of a staff and a runner located thereon, said runner provided with curved arms,

a collar located upon the runner, rib braces provided with elongated slots and the curved arms adapted to connect the rib braces to the runner and the collar adapted to hold the rib braces upon the arms, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

3. In an umbrella the-combination of astaff, a rib head secured to the staff, said rib head provided with curved arms, ribs pivotally connected to the arms and means for holding the ribs upon the arms, flanges connected to the 10 ribs intermediate their ends, rib braces provided with hooked outer ends, a runner provided with curved arms and the rib braces detachably connected to the runner, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
