I will now proceed to describe my iriven'tion in detail.
In the'accompanyingdrawings making a part of this application, and in which similar letters'of reference indicate corresponding parts,-Figure l is a view in perspective of my invention'applied to a chair. The upper covering of the seat, and a portion of the middle or seat part of the chair are removed, so that my-invention in its relation to the chair can be clearly seen. In constructing my platform, Iprovide ,a basal support or seat for each spring. This basal siipport E (see Fig.4) has a depression or channel E present at each 'end. One 'or more openings E in this depression formed by elevating the bottom of the depression at" E serve to receive the lower end of the spring. The latter is passed through these openings E and held .in position in the channel E This is the preferred 'mode of securing it to this seat E. Each end of this seat E is bent around in the form of a roll E*. To connect these basal supports or seats E is the fiinction of the'rod frame D. This frame has the inclined sides D and the flat sides at D D and these straight sides are respectively received into the adjacent rolls E, E oftwo seats Ef see Fig. 3. It is necessary to connect this bottom construction thus far described to the bottom frame A. To effect this connection, I provide the device H'for connecting" the straight part -D of "a hook D to the frame. -This part D is embraced in the hollow cylindrical or curved end H of the piece H. The piece H is preferably provided with the extended portion H so as to drop the curved part H below the topof the frame, and allow the bottom part of the platform to be lower down. A part H of the piece H is preferably present, being the preferred means for securing the piece to the frame. Bolts or screws or nails are in such case passed through the holes E into the frame A. To secure the basal supports or seats to the frame, I provide a device, see Fig. 10, consisting of a link F,
suitably secured in anoscillatory manner to the seat- I E and to the frame A. A. preferred kind of such connection is as follows: The plate G is bolted at G to. the top of the frame A and in its hollow cylindrical 'or curved end G is contained one side F of the link F, free to turn therein, The opposite side F? of this link is contained in the adjacent curved .end E of the seat E and-is free to turn therein, see Fig. 3.

This is especially the case on large chairs where the back is upholstered'and extends forward for a distance in front of the frame ofthe back of the chair.
In such event, I provide a device-for connecting the rear part of the platform to the rear part of the frame Fig. 11, namely: the rod has a straight portion I and by a suitable device. u'pper rod of the adjacent spring is passed through these eyes K K and is thus held firmly in position.
This clamping device just described is efficient. The
connection between these rod frames K and the spring beyond the ends K K, K of the rod frame is preferably 'made by means of a device such as L. This connection consists of two rods L L each of the rods at one end being provided with'an eye L and such eye embrac es an upper wire or rod of .an adjacent spring. The other end of ohe' set of these connections L is provided witha hook L These hooks engage the straight part .K of therod frame K. Inasmuch as the pieces K of rod frame converge toward the straight part K the hooks L will not slip laterally.

Many of the parts of myinventioii have an advantage resulting from their individual construction, and many of them have an advantage arising from their connection with other parts of the mechanism.
A great many slight changes inight be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not confine myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and. scope of my iny ention.
The seat E is very rapidly manufactured and affords a thorough support'for the spring. At the same time connection-is quickly made withthe adjacent rods. The part E thus constitutes not only a seat, but a link very convenient, very cheap of construction, easily applied and effective in use. The rod frame D of Fig. 8 is very simple, easily constructed and very strong. The same is true of the rod frame K, and its eyes K afford a very valuable addition to this simple device, thataltho gh valuable in use are cheap of manufacture. The parts L L with their terminals as described are easy of manufacture and strong in use. The piece H provided with its hollow cylindrical part or sleeve H? provides an attachment which is strong, not readily distiirbedand holds the rod frame securely to the lower frame. 1
The device shown in Fig. 10 is a valuable link and is very convenient, connecting the seat.E to the lower frame A. The rod frame I of Fig. 11 pivotally connected to the piece J and the hooks 1 I is simple, strong and allows the platform an extended oscillation up and down. The entire platform when united substantially as shown is of great elasticity and remarkable strength. A man can'stand upon one corner of this spring platform and jump up and down without deranging it, and after he steps off, it will resume its voriginal position. In many cases, particularly in the, seats of road and similar vehicles, the lower frame A,

In a spring platform, as a new article of manufacture, a seat for a spring, consisting of a plate having a channel provided with opening formed by raising the bottom of the channel, the adjacent end portion of the spring adapted to rest in the channel and to pass within this opening, and the ends curved over into the hook portions, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

In a spring platform, seats for the spring the coiled inverted conical truncated springs, whose apcxes respectively rest upon these seats, and are secured thereto, each seat provided with curved ends, a link pivoted at one end to a plate of the frame, and at the other end pivoted to a curved end of the spring seat, substantially as and for the purposes s ecified.

In a spring platform, seatsfor the springs, having 1 the channel openings for the end of the springs formed by raising the bottoms of the channels, and having the curved end hooks, and the links F pivotally connected to the frame, and engaging the adjacent hooks of these seats, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

In a spring platform, the combination of the springs and their seats, and the rod having a portion D and at each end of this portion an inclined portion D each inclined portion connected to a spring seat, and a pivotal holder H H H, pivotally engaging the inidportion D of the said rod, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

In a spring platform, the combination of the springs and their seats, and the rodhaving a portion D and at each end of this portion an inclined portion D, each .inclined portion connected to a spring seat, and a piv'otal holder H H H, pivotally engaging the midportion D of the 'said rod and the link F, pivotally connected to the frame at one end and to the spring seat on the side opposite where said roden gages the latter, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

In a spring platform, the combination of the spring seats having curved ends, rod frames having sides D and mid-sides D and end portions, these rod frames connected at their mid-sides to the spring seats, and at their end portions to each other, and'the links 1 connecting the spring seats to the sides of the frame, and the fixed holders II, connecting the rod frames to the front of this frame, substantially as and for the purposes specified.-

In a spring platform, the combination of the spring seats, rod frames having sides D midsides I) and end portions,.tl 1ese rod frames connected attheir midsides to the spring seats, and the end extension link devices, having a straight end I, piv,otally connected to the frame, and having converging sides I 1 provided at their meeting ends with hooks I, engaging an end portion of the said rod frame, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

In a spring platform, the combination ofthe spring seats. having curved ends ro'd frameshaving sides l)'', and midsides D and end portions, these rod frames connected at their mid-sides to the spring seats-and at their end portions to each' other, and the links F, connecting the spring seats to the sides of the frame, and the fixed holders H, connecting the rod frames to the front of this frame, and the end extension link devices, having a straight end I pivotally connected to the frame and having converging sides I 1 and where these sides meet connected to an end of the said rod frame, substantially asand for the purposes specified. In a spring platform, the springs, and a rod frame made of one piece and bent substantially as shown, its free ends located together and formed with a hook K, its mid-sides having ,the clamps K curved as shown and adapted to engage the parts of adjacent springs, and the connecting pieces U, L one set connected to one end of the rod frame K, and the other set to the other end of this rod frame, the other ends of said connecting pieces being respectivelyconnected to adjacent springs, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
21. In a spring platform, springs, rod frames K, having side clampsengaging springs, and ends, and the converging' connecting pieces 14 ,11 one set in one piece and hooked at its converged end to the end of the rod frame,-
by a hookon the latter, and the other set of two pieces, each having at each end a hook, the converging cnds hooked onto theend of the rod frame, and the other ends respectively to springs, and connections to the upper frame I HENRY H IGGIN.
