To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, STo'rEN A. TAYLOR and CHARLES F. HALDEMAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Cutters; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of. this specification, and to the numerals and. figures of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the feed roll thrown out of gear. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the clutch. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the clutch shift, showing the shift lever detached, also showing the lever detached from the bracket. Fig. 4 is a side elevation. Fig. 5 is an edge view of the gear wheels, showing the same properly assembled. Fig. 6 is a detached view of the clutch shift handle, showing the bracket for holding the handle also showing a portion of the clutch shifting link.
The present invention has relation to gear for feed cutters, and it consists in the novel arrangementhereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similarnumerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
In the accompanying drawing, 1 represents the fodder cutter frame, which is supported upon suitable legs 2. The frame within itself forms no particular part of the present invention, but a frame of some sort must necessarily be employed and used to which the various parts of the fodder cutter proper and the various gears and shafts are attached. In the frame 1 is properly journaled the shaft 3, upon which shaft the cutter head is securely mounted, said cutter head being of any desired style or kind such as cutting blades located spiral with reference to the shaft 3. The cutter head, however does not form any particular part of the present invention. Upon the shaft 3 is located the gear wheel 4, which in this instance is a sprocket wheel, and from which sprocket wheel leads the sprocket chain 5, which sprocket chain is located around the sprocket wheel 6, which sprocket wheel is loosely mounted upon the shaft 7, and upon which shaft is securely mounted the lower feed roll 8. Upon the. shaft 7 is loosely mounted the long pinion 9, which pinion may be formed integral with the sprocket wheel 6 or it may be 'made separate and connected to said sprocket wheel,
but in either event the sprocket wheel 6 and the pinion 9 in order to carry out the purpose hereinafter described must be loosely mounted upon the shaft 7. Below the shaft 7 is located the shaft 10, which shaft is journaled in the frame and has mounted thereon means for moving the endless feed belt 11, which parts within themselves form no particular part of the present invention and hence no description or illustration is necessary. Upon the shaft 10 is loosely mounted the gear wheel 12, which gear wheel meshes with the pinion 9. At one side of the gear wheel 12 is located the clutch member 13, which clutch member is preferably formed integral with the gear wheel 12, and is loosely and slidably mounted upon the shaft 10. Upon the shaft 10 is securely mounted the pinion 14, which pinion meshes with the gear wheel 15, which gear wheel is mounted upon the short stud 16, said short stud being preferably secured to the frame 1 or its equivalent. The gear wheel 15 meshes with the gear wheel 17 and the gear wheel 17 meshes with the gear wheel 18, which gear wheel is mounted upon the shaft 19, and upon said shaft 19 is securely mounted the upper feed roll 20. The gear wheel 15 meshes with the gear wheel 21, which gear wheel is securely mounted upon. the shaft 7 and drives said shaft and the lower feed roll 8. The gear wheel 17 is loosely mounted upon the short spindle 22, and upon which spindle are connected the upper pair of links 23 and the lower pair of links 24, which links are for the purpose of holding the gear wheels 15, 17 and 18 in proper mesh with each other at all times and also form a bearing for the spindle 22.
It is well understood that in feed cutters that at least one of the rolls must come and go from the other feed roll so as to compensate for the various thickness of material passing between the feed rolls and in order that the feed rolls may move the material by their rotation it is necessary that pressure is brought upon the material to be cut, regardless of the amount of material .lower ends of the links 25 is attached the cross-bar 26,
upon which cross-bar rests the free ends of the springs 27, said springs being so constructed that they will have a tendency to pull the shaft 19 together with the different parts attached thereto downward towards the lower shaft 8 at all times.
It will be understood that as the upper roll moves away from the lower roll the links 23 and 24 will hold the various gear wheels 15, 1'7 and 18 in proper mesh, owing to the fact that said links will hold the gear wheels in proper mesh regardless of the position of the upper roll 20 with reference to the lower roll 8. When it is desired to throw the feed mchanism and the cutter head out of gear, the lever 28 is brought into the position illustrated in Fig. 1 and when brought into the position the clutch member 13 is detached from the clutch member 29 by means of the bars 30 and 31, the bar 13 being pivotally attached to the bracket 32 or its equivalent and said bar pivotally attached to the clutch shift 33, which clutch shift slides back and forth upon the short shaft or stud 34, said stud being attached to the frame 1 or its equivalent. When the clutch members are detached from each other the gear wheels (5 and 12 will run idle and no motion will be communicated to the pinion 14. When it is desired to bring the fodder cutter into action, thelever 28 is moved in the direction to bring the clutch members into engagement with each other by means of the bars 30 and 31, thereby bringing all of the gear intermediate the power wheel 35 and feed rolls into action. The lever 28 is securely and adjustably attached to the lever member 36, which lever member is pivoted to the bracket 37, which bracket is attached to some part of the frame proper or its equivalent, and the lever member 36 held in proper position by means of the bearing 38, the cotter 39 and the washer 40, or their equivalents. It will be understood that the manner of attaching this lever may be varied without departing from the nature of our invention, as the only object is to so connect the lever that when it is moved in opposite directions it will engage and disengage the clutch members;
Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a gear for feed cutters, the combination of a suitable fralne, with a shaft having mounted thereon, a cutter head, a gear wheel mounted upon said shaft, feed roll shafts having mounted thereon feed rolls gear wheels fixed to said shafts, a gear wheel mounted between the gear wheels mounted upon the feed roll shafts, said gear wheels supported in link bearings, said link bearings being pivoted at their opposite ends, a gear wheel adapted to mesh with one of the gear wheels upon one of the feed roll shafts and the gear wheel carried by the pivoted links, a pinion securely mounted upon a shaft, said shaft being provided with a slidable clutch member and a clutch member fixed to said shaft, a gear wheel loosely mounted upon the shaft having the fixedclutch member and a pinion adapted to mesh with said gear wheel, said pinion be ing loosely mounted upon the feed roll shaft and a gear wheel adapted to be driven by the gear wheel located upon the cutter head shaft and a clutch shift, and means for moving the clutch shift, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a gear for feed cutters, the combination of feed roll shafts, feed rolls mounted thereon, gear wheels secured to said shafts, one of the shafts and its feed roll adapted to move from the other shaft and feed roll, links pivoted to the movable feed roll shaft, a gear wheel mounted upon a shaft, said gear \vhecl adapted to mesh with the gear wheel upon the movable shaft, :1 gear wheel mounted upon a fixed shaft, links pivotally connected to said fixed shaft, and to the shaft of the gear whee] meshing with the gear wheel upon the movable feed roll shaft, and the gear wheel upon the fixed shaft adapted to mesh with the gear upon the nonmovable feed roll shaft, :1 gear wheel and a pinion loosely mounted upon the fixed feed roll shaft, a gear wheel adapted to mesh with the loosely mounted pinion upon the feed roll shaft, said last. mentioned gear wheel being mounted upon a shaft, said shaft; provided with a pinion adapted to mesh with the gear wheel meshing with the gear wheel upon the fixed feed roll shaft, a clutch, and means for moving the clutch in and out of engagement, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a gear for feed cutters, a frame, a feed roll, shafts provided with feed rolls, one of said shafts fixed and the other movable and pivoted links, gear wheels fixed to the feed roll shaft, a gear wheel mounted on a short; shaft, the short shaft of the gear wheel being journaled in said pivoted links, a stud having mounted thereon a gear wheel adapted to mesh with the gear wheel carried by the pivot ed links and said pivoted links being connected to the movable feed roll shaft, and the stud and the gear wheel mounted upon the stud adapted to mesh with the gear upon the fixed feed roll shaft, :1 shaft and a clutch lo cated upon said shaft and means for operating the clutch, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. In a gear for feed cutters, the combinat ion of a frame and a cutter head shaft thereon, with feed roll shafts pro vided with feed rolls, one of said shafts being fixed and the other movable, gear wheels fixed to the. feed roll shafts, a gear wheel journaled in pivoted links, a stud having mounted thereon. a gear wheel adapted to mesh with the gear wheel carried by the pivoted links and said pivoted link being connected to the movable feed roll shaft. and the stud and the gear wheel mounted upon the stud meshing with the gear wheel upon the fixed feed roll shaft, and a pinion adapted to mesh with the gear wheel upon the short stud, and a clutch located upon a shaft. and means for shifting the clutch an(v gear \vhecls located intermediate the stud and. cutter head shaft, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
