ARTHUR CHARTIER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
THRE AD -RETAII\TER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 1, 1907.
Application filed April 5,1906. Serial No. 309,959.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR N. CHARTIER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, county of Suffolk, Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thread Retainers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a retaining device for preventing the catching of thread under the end of the roll, ball or cop from which the thread is being fed to a sewing machine or other machine in which the thread is being used.
In feeding thread from-a cylindrical body or roll of thread wound upon a bobbin or tube, it is usual to support the roll of thread upon a stand and to lead the thread from the periphery of the thread body through a thread-eye arranged over the top of the roll. In case the thread has a hard finish, coils of thread are liable to loosen and drop down to the bottom of the roll where they are likely to pass under the bottom of the roll and thus prevent or interfere with the proper feeding of the thread causing delay as well as a waste of material.
It is the purpose of the present invention to provide means for preventing this action of the thread and to that end the invention comprises a retaining device which may be connectedwith the roll of thread and is provided with a yielding means which engages and continually presses against the end of the thread body, thus preventing any loose strands or coils of thread, which may drop down to the lower end of the thread body, from passing under and catching upon the lower end of the thread body in such manner as to interfere with the free feeding of the thread.
The retaining device consists of a base upon which the yielding means is carried and which is provided with means for affixing the base to the roll of thread in such manner that the pressure between the end of the thread body and the yielding means is continually maintained.
The base may be of any suitable construction and may form the stand upon which the thread is supported or may be a separate device which is attached to the end of the thread body and itself rests upon a thread carrying stand.
The invention will be readily understood from the following detailed description of the construction shown in the accompanying drawings.
In these drawingsFigure 1 is a sectional elevation of a thread retaining device embodying the invention,
in which the base of the device forms a stand for supporting the thread and also supporting the thread-eye through which the thread is led from the thread body. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the construction shown in Fig. 1.
As shown in Fig. 1 the cylindrical roll or ball of thread A, which is wound upon a tube or bobbin B, is
supported upon a base 0. The base is provided with posts 0 arranged diametrically opposite each other and provided with recesses 0. Elastic bands of rubber D, or other suitable material, are stretched between the posts 0 and are retained in the recesses c. The base 0 is also provided with vertically extending fingers c which are so arranged that the bands D may pass be These fingers are tween them, as indicated in Fig. 2. so arranged that they will fit within the bobbin B on which the thread body is wound and will spring sulficiently .to maintain an effective gripping friction on, the inner surface of the bobbin.
In applying the thread bobbin to the base 0 the bobbin is forced down onto the fingers 0 until the lower end is below the points of support for the bands D so that the bands are compressed and put under tension as indicated in Fig. 1, the fingers c gripping the bobbin B with sufficient force to maintain the bobbin and thread body in this position. The thread is led from the periphery of the thread body through a thread-eye E formed at theupper end of a standard E which is secured to the base G. If during the feeding of the thread any loose coils drop down to the bottom of the thread body, they will rest upon the bands D which are drawn snugly against the outer lower edge of the thread body and will be prevented from passing under the lower end of the thread body to such a degree as to interfere with the proper feeding of the'thread. As the diameter of the thread body is reduced, the bands D will .maintain their engagement with the lower outer edge of the thread body due to their resiliency and thus the thread will at all times be maintained at the outer periphery of the thread body. The gripping effect of the fingers c is sufficient to prevent the displacement of the thread body due to any jar or shock to which the base G or the support on which it rests, may be subjected during the operation of the machine to which the thread is being fed and thus the proper feeding of the thread is insured.
While I prefer to provide the base of the thread retaining device with means for afiixing it to the thread bobbin or thread body which hold the thread bobbin or body by frictional engagement with the recess in the center thereof, it will be understood that this form of securing means is not essential, and that other forms may be employed.
It will also be understood that the form and construction of the base and of the yielding means, may be varied without departing from the invention.
Without attempting to point out all the forms in which my invention may be embodied, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is z- 1. A thread retaining device comprising a base, supports rising from the base, flexible bands extending across the base from support to support, and a device for entering the thread body and holding the body with its end 3. A thread retaining device comprising a base C proagainst the bands and below the points of support for the vided with posts 0, bands D extending diametrically from bands, substantially as described. post;-tn.post, and lingers c for gripping the inner surface 2. A thread retaining device comprising a base proof the bobbin on which the thread is wound, substantially vided with supports, flexible bands extending across from as described. support to support at a distance above the surface of the In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, this base and held under tension by said supports, a device 30th day of March 1906. rising from the base between said supports for entering thethread body and holding the thread body with its end below the points of support for the bands, substantially as described.
