To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. AHERN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mule-Spinning Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being made therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a novel means or construction combined with the cop-builder mechanism of a spinning mule, or employed as an attachment thereto; the object of the invention being to prevent the yarn from throwing off at the nose or point of the bobbins when winding on the latter portion of the stretch, especially when the bobbins are nearly filled. Also, to obviate the tendency of the yarn growing heavier in the strand as the bobbin becomes filled towards the topend thereof, while maintaining the same or uniform delivery of roving at each time of action. I attain these objects by a mechanism embodying the features of construction and combinations explained in the following detailed description and illustrated in the drawings; the particular subject matter claimed being definitely pointed out and expressed in the summary.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a sectional side elevation, including such parts of a mule spinning machine as will show the nature of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the rear part of the cop-builder rail and improved nose-forming means. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the parts embraced in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a transverse section at the line X X on Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, A denotes the carriage, a the spindle and bobbin, B the roving delivering rolls; G and D the fallers carrying the faller-wires respectively above and below the yarn. E indicates the taller-lock; F the faller-lock carrier or builder-arm; G the travelerroll of said carrier; I the cop-builder-rail upon which said roll travels; J and J the inclined supporters or builder-plates; K their connecting rod; and L the regulating screw for shifting said builder-plates endwise for elevating and depressing the rail 1, which latter is gradually depressed as the bobbins are filled in the operation of the spinning mechanism. All of the above indicated parts, excepting the builder rail I, are of usual well known construction, but are herein shown in a general way to represent the relation of the mechanisms and the manner in which the within described invention is adapted to be employed therewith.
The operation and structure of such parts of a complete spinning machine as are not herein shown and particularly described, are well known and will be understood by those skilled in the art, in so far as respects the operation of the present invention.
In accordance with my invention, the rear end of the builder-rail I is provided with a movable wedgeshaped nose-forming element mounted thereon and adapted to be slidably adjusted endwise upon the rail, or automatically controlled in respect to its relative position; and which acting through the medium of the faller mechanism, governs the final windings of yarn at the latter part of each stretch, as it is wound upon the bobbin, by effecting a peculiar regressive or ducking movement of the wind-guiding faller; thereby causing the finishing coils to be placed in such relation that the yarn will not throw off by the rapid rotation of the bobbin, nor slacken and kink when the fallers are released preparatory to commencing the run-out for spinning of the succeeding stretch. This nose-forming element, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises an endwise movable, forwardly tapered wedge or piece 3, about fourteen inches, more or less, in length and having a track surface upon its upper side disposed in continuation of the track surface of the builder-rail I, upon which the roll G of the faller-lock carrier F runs. The top of said adjustable nose-forming piece is longitudinally inclined in a direction opposite to the inclination of the top surface of the builder-rail, and meets said rail surface with a comparatively thin edge at its end 2, so that the roll G will pass easily from the rail surface to the nose-former surface.
The rear end of the builder-rail is preferably made with an attached rearward extension 5, upon which the nose-former 3 is adjustably supported, and guided by intermatching longitudinal groove and ribs 6 which prevent lateral displacement while permitting endwise movement of the nose-former piece thereon. The extension 5 may in some instances be an integral part of the builder-rail; but is preferably constructed as a separate piece, and attached to the end of the I builder-rail, as shown, by screw-bolts 7 or equivalent fastenings; since such separate construction facilitates the convenient and accurate formation thereon of the guiding ribs and grooves; and also renders it easy to apply the improved attachment to spinning-machines which are already in use, as well as to machines in manufacture. The top of the extension piece is in alinement with the top of the builder-rail and the member 3 is seated upon the top of each so as to be movable endwise thereon. It can also be lifted off when desired.
The nose-former piece 3 is coupled to the movable builder-plate by a stud 9 that is fixed in the side of the nose-former piece, and which engages with a slotted upwardly projecting arm 10 that is firmly secured to a rearwardly extended portion 11 of said builder-plate J The arm 10 is pivotally adjustable on its attaching bolt 12. so that it can be set upright, or with either forward or rearward inclination; thereby enabling the noseforiner 3 to assume positions relatively more or less forward or rearward in respect to the inclined portion of said builder-plate upon which the ear or button 13 of the builder-rail I rests. The several latter named parts are supported and guided by the standard 14, as shown.
The top of the builder-rail I is preferably formed with an extra downward inclination from a point a; rearward in relation to the normal line of the central top of the rail; such inclination being in the proportion of about one quarter inch, more or less, to a length of sixteen inches. The point a; is located at a position corresponding to about two thirds or three fourths of the wind-up.
Movement of the two inclined builder-plates J and J for gradually lowering the builder-rail I and carrying the winding-on up the bobbin, is effected by means of the regulating screw L, the nut M on which is attached to the plate-connecting rod K in the usual manner.
The screw L is provided with the customary ratchet mechanism at P which is intermittingly actuated, automatically, as heretofore practiced, or in any suitable manner.
In the operation, as the traveler-roll G runs along the builder-rail I, from its fore end to the point i, and thence to the point x, the taller O first guides the yarn down the cone of the cop and then upward along the cone in the usual manner. Then as the roll travels along the rail rearward from the point a; the extra incline of the rail gives a somewhat increased rise to the taller until the winding comes to the wood of the bobbin, and the traveler-roll runs onto the end of the oppositely inclined adjustable nose-former 3, which latter imparts a duck or downward movement to the winder-guide faller C, thereby causing a downward wind of the yarn at the extreme point of the cone, or the laying of downwardly wound coils over the later upwardly wound coils; thus finishing each wind-up with a downward instead of an upward wind upon the nose of the cop when the fallers are released. The advantages of this improved means and operation are, that the coils at the latter end of the wind are held close and the yarn prevented from throwing off when near the top of the bobbin. The yarn being closely Wound up. and so held, obviates the liability of an increase in weight of the strand when spinning on nearly full bobbins. The secure holding of the coils at the end of the wind-up also serves to prevent kinking between the delivery-rolls and spindle points when the fallers are released.
By the endwise adjustment of the piece 3 the noseforining action can be brought into effect at an earlier or later instant in the wind-up operation; and the nosefornier can be located upon the rail 1 so as to come into action at a point where the bobbin is more or less filled. Said nose-former being automatically adjustable in connection with the means that controls the builder-rail, it is rendered increasingly effective as the winding-on approaches the top of the bobbins so that any desired degree of duck or regressive wind can be given near the final nosing as the bobbins become filled.
The nose-former piece 3 may be provided with a plurality of holes 15, in either of which the stud El can be placed; and the extension on the builder-plate .l may be made with a plurality of holes .16 for receiving the bolt 12, thus affording a wide range of adjustments. When the slotted arm 10 is set at a rearward iiu-lhration the advance movement of the nose-former is proportionally accelerated with respect to the dmvnward movement of the builder-rail, and when the arm is set at a forward inclination the advancing movement. of the nose-former is proportionally retarded with respect to the movement of the builder rail. The result of this is that the nose-winding duck movement of the faller C can be variously regulated to give greater or less increase of effect, as the winding-on of the yarn approaches the top end of the bobbins, so as to conform to the requirements of spinning different kinds of yarns or stock, and the degrees of twist; or to take up the yarn more or less closely, so as to obviate kinking between the bobbins and rolls B, as the fallers are released.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a mule spinning machine, the combination. with fallers, taller-lock mechanism, and cop builder-rail; of an adjustable nose forming means disposed at the rear end of the builder-rail and comprising a Ilatwisc tapered wedgeshaped member overlying the top surface of the cophuilder-rail and longitudinally adjustable thereon to and from a position that corresponds to the final part of the wind-up, and means for effecting eudwisc adjustment of said member to give later or earlier effect when courting with the fuller-lock carrier for imparting a final downward wind at the latter end of the winding-on action.
