To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY GRANDAL BABCOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at South St. Paul, in the county of Dakota and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Automatic Cut-Offs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device which will automatically shut off the flow of gas to the burner whenever the flame is extinguished.
A further object of the device is tohold the gas valve in varying positions to regulate the size of the flame.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete device; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the attachment viewed from the left of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a detail view of parts of the bracket; Fig. 4 is a detail view of the trip arm.
To a gas pipe 1 is joined a valve casing 2 carrying a plug valve 2 and an ordinary burner 3. Fastened to the plug valve 2 so as to turn rigidly therewith is a trip arm 4. A spiral spring 5 has one end engaged in the opening 6 of the trip arm 4 and the other end fastened to any suitable point 7 on the gas pipe. The tension of the spring normally tends to close the gas valve 2. v
I An irregular bracket 8 has a circular opening 9 adapted to fit over the upper end of the valve casing and tobe held in place by the burner. To the outer end of the bracket 8 is hinged in the usual manner by means of a pin 10 a bracket 11 normally held in vertical position. This bracket 11 has on the side away irom the gas burner two laterally extending lugs 12 and 13 provided with perforations 14 and 15, respectively, for a purpose hereinafter described. The bracket 11 also has on its lower edge a projecting lip provided with teeth 16 shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. The outer end of the trip arm 4 engages with these teeth 16 when the valve is opened and holds the valve in open position.
Passing through the perforations 14 and 15 in the bracket 11 is a rod 17 to the upper end of which is attached in any suitable manner a four bladed mica fan 18. Beneath the fan is a collar 19 surrounding the rod 17 which collar rests upon a glass bead 20 through which the rod 17 passes and said bead is supported by the lateral extension 12 of the bracket 11. At the lower end of the rod 17 is an irregularly shaped metal ball 22 which gives the fan a wabbling motion when it revolves and also by its weight normally holds the teeth 16 in engagement with the trip arm 4.
To the side of bracket 11 beneath the hinge is fastened a stop arm 21 the upper end of which bears normally against the bracket 8 and prevents any side movement of the fan except towards the burner.
It will be understood from the foregoing description that any current of air which is suflicient to extinguish the gas flame will cause a revolution of the fan and a consequent movement thereof from the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 to that shown in dotted lines in the same figure. gagement with the trip arm 4 and the spring 5 will immediately close the valve. It will also be understood that the valve may be held open at various degrees of adjustment according to which one of the teeth 16 is in engagement with the trip arm 4.
I claim:
1. In an automatic cut-off for gas burners, the combination of a gas cock carrying a trip arm, a burner to which is attached a horizontally extending bracket, :1 vertical bracket which is hinged to said horizontal bracket, said vertical bracket having a lip at its lower edge provided with teeth which normally engage the trip arm, and also having lugs supporting a rod which carries a fan at its upper end, and a spring normally tending to close the gas cock, substantially as described.
2. In an automatic cutoff for gas burners, the combination of a gas cock carrying a trip arm, a burner to which is attached a horizontally extending bracket, a vertical bracket which is hinged near its center portion to said horizontal bracket, said vertical bracket having a lateral lip at its lower edge provided with teeth which normally engage the trip arm, and also having lateral lugs in which is journaled a rod which carries a four bladed fan-at its upper end and an irregular shaped metal ball at its lower end, and a spring normally tending to close the gas cock, substantially as described.
