To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that. l, HENRY LA llurfvunicv, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Monroe, in the county of Monroe and Slate of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful lmprm'vmente in Trolley-Wheels, of which the following is a specilication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Tbis invention relates to iiuprrwemcnts in trolley Wheels and more especially to trolley wheels of a construction Similar to that shown in my application for Letters Patent filed Nov. 13, 1905, Serial No. 287,009', and the object of this invention is to so construct the bearing member upon which the wheel turns and secure it to the harp that it, together with the harp forms a rigid support for the wheel the parts oi which support will not becom(` loosened and detached by the` vibration, and in which the bearing member is rigidly held from turning.I
A further object of the invention is to provide a device having the several advautagioi the particular construction, arrangement and combination of parts,
Aall as hereinafter more fully described, refr-rence being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure l is a sido elevation o a device embodying the invention; Fig. 2, a transverse vertical section of the same; and Fig. 3 a top or plan view.
As shown in the drawings 1 is tho harp or fork in which the trolley wheel is supported, said harp consisting of a socket portieri 2 to receive the troiley pole and two arms 3 extending upwardly rom seid socket land curved outwardly away from each other so that should the wheel become disengaged in use, from the trolley wire, in pulling the pole downward to renge the wheel therewith the wire will strike the out- Wardly Curved sido of one o the arms and be dofiected so that it will not catch upon any projecting part of the trolley.
The upper enlarged ends of the arms 3 are each formed with a vertical slot 4 which is wider at the outer side of the arm than the inner side thereof thus forming a dovetail slot to receive o. dovetail 5 formed on each vend of a shaft or bearing member 6A T his member is further rigidly secured within the slotted ends of the harp'arms by pins 7 driven into transverse holes in the dovetails and arms. These arms are thus rigidly connected by the bearing member to form a rigid support for the wheel and said member is secured in Such o. manner that the vibration caused by the rapid travel of the wheel on the wire will not loosen it, the strain being taken from the securing pins by the dovetail connection, and ali possibility that the mornber may turn is removed.
The bearing member is formed all in one piece with a globular portion 8 intermediate its ends having a circumferential groove 9 which, in cross-section is V- shaped with the apex cutting the surface of the globe and forming a. narrow slot therein., The portions l0 of the member at each side of the globular part are cylindrical with the dovetails 5 formed on their outer ends.
The trolley wheel 11- is made in two parte, 12 and 13, the part l2 being formed with the wheel rim 14 having the groove for a. trolley Wire, cast integral there with and also formed with a hub portion lorining one half of a socket to receive the globular enlargement of the bearing member, the other half being formed on the part 13 of the wheel. .A short sleeve portion 16 extends laterally from each hub or socket portion 15 and each of said sleeve portions has an internal diameter which is greater than the diameter of the cylindrical portions of the bearing member which they surround so that the rim of the wheel will have a limited lateral or 'wabbling movement, the wheel turning about the axis of the globular portion,'said wobble boing limited by the contact of the sleeves with the cylindrical portions 10. The bearing member being held from turning and the wheel turning upon its globular portion only, the bering will wear the come at all points of Contact and the wheel will run freely and there will be a goed contact between the Surface after they have become worn considerably.
An annular-oil chamber 17 Surrounds the globular hub of the wheel, one half of the chamber being formed in each part of the wheel, which parte are secured together by bolts 18 passing through the web of the wheel between the chamber and rim on the part 12 and through lugs 19 on the part 13. A strip of paralined paper 20 or other suitable material is placedbetween the two parts to make a tight joint and seid chamber communicates with the groove 9 through openings 2,1. Oil is introduced into the oil chamber through a. valve 22 screwed into a screw-threaded openiirg the oido of said chamber, said valve consistingrof( a tubular casing 23 open at one end and externally @crew-threaded at its opposite end and formed at this end with an internal valve seat for a. valve 24 held to its seat by a coiled spring. When the casing is fully screwed Kin, its open end engages the opposite side of the casing and is tightly closed thereby,lateral openings 25 being provided in the casing to permit the escape of the oil admitted by the valve.
By forming the whole rim of the wheel integral with one part of the divided wheel, the cost of manufacture is reduced and the rim will wear much longer and give better Contact than one made in halves.
