To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. WEBER, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Double- Scaming Machines, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to improvements in double seaming machines.
Heretoiore in double seaming the covers on sheet metal cans, difficulty has been experienced in producing with reliability, regularity and uniformity, perfect and liquid or hermetically tight seams 0n the cans, owing to the fact that frequently the seaming flange on the can body is more or less irregular or uneven, or has become moreor less battered, dented or misshaped in handling or shipment of the cans. And the object of my invention is to provide amachine or mechanism by' which this objection or difficulty in the production of perfect and tight seams may be overcome or avoided. My invention consists in the means I employ to practically accomplish this object or result. That is to say, it consists in connection with the can clamping chucks by which the can body and head are clamped and held during the seaming operation, and suitable seaming rollers, of a flange straightening roller operating in advance of the seaming rollers to straighten the seaming flange on the can body preparatory to the seaming operation.
My invention also consists in the novel construction of parts and devices, and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described.
In the accompanying drawing forming'a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation "of a double seaming machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3-3 of Fig; 2 and showing the flange straightening roller in operation, and Figs. 4 and 5 are detail sections illustrating the operation of the seaming rollers.
In the drawing, A represents the frame of the ma chine; B is the lower chuck and G the upper chuck for clamping and holding the can body X and can head or cover X during the flange straightening and seaming operations. The lower can chuck'B upon which the can rests, reciprocates vertically to clamp the can andcover against the upper chuck C. D represents the seaming head, the same being furnished with a pair of seaming rollers 11 d for folding together the seaming flanges x on the can body and x on the can head or cover and forming the double seam. All these parts may be of any ordinary or suitable construction now commonly in use and familiar to those skilled in the art. In the drawing, I have for convenience illustrated the can chucks B O as rotary ones'for rotating the cans in respect to the seaming head, but if desired, the can chucks may be non rotary and the can thus held stationary while the seaming head and seaming.

The seaming head D in addition to the necessary seaming rollers d d carried thereby, is preferably furn'ished with a flange supporting roller d which cooperates with the flange straightening roller f to support the can body flange x and cover X against the upward thrust of the flange straightening roller f, which operates to straighten the flange of the can body preparatory to the seaming operation.
The flange straightening roller f is preferably journaled upon a slide F by a pin or stud f and this slide 1* is reciprocated in its guides F as required, preferably by means of a lever F connecting pin F and cam P, which latter is preferably secured to the seaming head D by a bolt F so that when the seaming head D is operated to bring the flange supporting roller d into position, the flange straightening roller f will be automatically operated by the movement of the seaming head. The operating slide F for the flange straightening roller f is retracted and. normally held in its retracted position by the spring f The slide operating lever F and the connecting pin F are carried upon the main bracket G which carries the seaming head bracket G. The main bracket G and with it the seaming head bracket G may be adjusted up and down as required by the adjusting screw g and is fixed in position on the frame A by a bolt 9 The bracket G .carries a pivot or stud 9 upon which the seaming head D turns oflrocks.
The lower can chuck B may bereciprocated as required by any suitable means, the mechanism for this purpose represented in the drawing being a treadle H, link h, and lever h which connects with the stem B upon which the chuck B is journaled by a pin or stud b. The upper chuck C has a shaft 0 journaled in the handle or-lever D. I prefer to mount the flange supporting roller d on the seaming head, as it thus may be operated or moved into operative position by the same means employed for actuating the seaming 'rollers.
While in the drawing I have illustrated my flange straightening invention or improvement as applied to one well known form or kind of double seaming machine, I desire it to be understood that it is equally adapted for use with other kinds of seaming machines now commonly in use or familiar to those skilled in the art.
The seaming head carrying bracket G is mounted on a bracket G and may be adj ustcd to and from the axis of the can chuck by means of an adjusting screw 9 and clamp nut g.
I claim:
1. In a double seaming machine, the combination with a pair of chucks for clamping the can body and can head or cover, of seaming rollers and a flange straightening roller operating in advance of the seaming rollers to straighten the seaming flange on the can body preparatory to the seaming operation, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with a pair of chucks for clamping and holding the can, of seaming rollers,- and means for straightening the seaming flange on the can body preparatory to the seaming operation, substantially as specified.
i The combination with a pair of can chucks, 0f seaming rollers and a flange straightening device for straightening the horizontalflange on the can body preparatory to the seaming operation, substantially as specified.
4. The combination with a pair of can chucks, of a flange supporting roller and a flange straightening roller for straightening the horizontal flange on the can body preparatory to the seaming operation, substantially as specified.
The combination with a pair of can chucks, of a seaming head, a flange supporting roller mounted thereon, and a flange straightening roller for straightening the horizontal flange on the can body preparatory to the seaming operation. substantially as specified.
(i. The combination with a pair of can chucks, of a seaming head, a flange supporting roller mounted thereon, a flange straightening roller and means for operating the flange straightening roller from the seaming head, substantially as specified.
T. The combination with a pair of chucks for holding and rotating the can. of a flange supporting roller, a movable head upon which it is mounted, a flange straightening roller and means for operating the flange straightening roller from the movable head carrying the flange supporting roller, substantially as'spccified.
8. The combination with a pair of chucks, of a seaming head, a flange supporting roller-:mounted thereon, a cam carried by said head, a flange straightening roller, a slide upon which said flange straightening roller is mounted and a connecting lever and pin for operating the flange straightening roller from said head carrying the flange supporting roller, substaptially as specified.
1). The combination with chucks for clamping the can and cover, of a seaming head, seaming rollers carried thereby, a flange supporting roller carried by said seaming head and a flange straightening roller operated by the movement of the seaming head, substantially as specified.
10. The combination with chucks for clamping the can and cover, of a seaming head, seaming rollers carried thereby, a flange supportingroller carried by said seaming head and a flange straightening roller, a movable slide upon which the flangestraightening roller is journaled and connecting means for operating said slide from and by the seaming head, substantially as specified.
11. In a double seaming machine for cans a supplemental-y straightening roller and means for moving said roller upwardly and forwardly to engage with the under surface of the body flange, immediately, before the engage ment of the seaming rollers with the flanges.
12. In a double seaming machine for cans, a supplementary, straightening roller, and means for moving said roller into engagement with the lower surface. of the body flange, to straighten said flange, against the cap flange.
13. In a double seaming machine for cans, the combination with a suitable frame and a horizontally operating seaming tool, of a supplementary straightening roller suitably supported and means for moving said roller momentarily into engagement with the body flange, before the engagement of the seaming tool therewith.
1a. In a double seaming machine for cans the combine. tion with a suitable frame, of a seaming tool journaled on the frame, and adapted tobe swung in a path parallel with the cap and body flanges into engagement therewith, a supplementary straightening roller and means to move said roller upwardly into engagement with the under surface of the body flange to straighten said body flange immediately before the engagement of the seaming tool with said flanges.
15. In a double seaming machine for cans, the combina tion with a suitable frame, a support for the cans, means to rotate the can support and the can while the can is being seamed, a seaming tool journaled on the frame and seaming rollers on said tool, of a supplementary straightening roller supported on the frame, and means operated by the seaming tool for moving said supplementary roller upwardly into engagement with the lower surface of the body flanges, immediately before the seaming rollers engage with the cap and body flanges.
16. In a double seaming machine for cans, the combination with a suitable'frame, of a seaming tool journaled on the frame and provided with a plurality of seaming rollers, said tool being adapted to be swung in a horizontal plane to bring its rollers into engagement with the cap and body flanges, a supplementary straightening roller and means to move said roller upwardly into engagement with the under surface of the body flange immediately before the engagement of the seaming tool with the flanges.
17. In a double seaming machine for cans, the combination with a suitable frame, of a seaming tool jonrnaled on the frame and adapted to be swung into engagement with the cap and body flanges to form the seam, a supple mental-y straightening roller and means to move said roller upward y to bring its periphery into engagement with the under surface of the body flange, immediately before the engagement of-the seaming tool with said flanges.
18. In a double seaming machine for cans, a supplementary straightening roller and means for moving said roller upwardly to bring its periphery into engagement with the under surface of the body flange to straighten said body flange, immediately before the engagement of,
the seaming rollers with said flange.
