To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, GARRETT H. HUIsING, `a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Seals, of Which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to seals, and has for its object the provision of an improved seal that cannot be removed without the fact of its removal being detectable.
The seal of my invention includes four shanks, which, after having been operated upon by the sealing tool, are firmly engaged With the material that is to be sealed thereby.
It is to be understood that the seal of my present invention is not to beilimited to a use wherein the shanks thereof are forced through material, as, for example, it may be of service in sealing the strings of packages where the string is crossed, the crossing of the string 0ccurring in the central space flanked by the shanks.
The seal may also be used for sealing the knots of strings, in which case the knot is desirably disposed in this central space.
The scaling tool heads the shanks preferably in such a manner that the newly headed part of the seal becomes substantially common to the shanks, there then resulting a seal in association with the material that is to be sealed having a plurality of shanks and two heads common to the shanks and upon opposite ends thereof.
I will explain my invention more fully by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the seal. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing it applied to a sheet of material ready for sealing'. Fig. 3 is a top plan view sho v'v' ing it as applied to a tag and a cord loop in position for sealing. Fig. 4 is a section through Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a top plan view similar to Fig. 3 after the heading of the shanks is completed on `both sides. Fig. 6 is a section through Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a top plan View showing the application of my invention to crossed cords,` and Fig. 8 is a similar view showing its application to the knotted portion of a cord.
The seal of the invention, in the form shown, includes a head a, from which are projected four shanks b. AThese shanks are spaced a sufficient distance apart so that material that is to be sealed may intervene between the same. For example, .if these shanks are forced through a shipping tag, there will be four apen tures in the tag, each containing a shank b, and a web of the tag will intervene between the apertures that contain said shanks. If the seal is to be employed for sealing crossed string, the intersection ofthe crossed string is located in a central space between the shanks b, as indicated in Fig. 7, or, if a knot of a string is to be sealed, said knot is disposed in said central space,` as indicated in Fig. 8.
Whatever may be the material that is sealed by the device of my invention, the sealing tool upsets the free ends of the shanks b, whereby a practically new head e is formed, the upset portions of the said shanks practically combining to form a substantially integral head.
It will be very apparent that the seal of my invention, after having been once properly applied, cannot be removed without the fact of its removal being de tectable.
Before the seal is applied, it desirably has only the common head, the companion head being preferably entirely formed in the application of the seal. In other Words, the shanks are preferably separated at their free ends so that the seal may be universally adaptable tosuch uses, for example, as sealing tags and sealing the strings of packages.
Having thus described niy invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent:-
A seal including four comprcssible soft metal shanks, and a common head therefor, from which the said shanks project.
