Description

PATENTED SEPT. 3, 1907/ N. A. CHRISTENSEN.
COMPRESSOR,
APPLICATION FILED AUG.13, 1002.
as 153 as /5J.9 33
I juenz 'onsiding at Milwaukp'e,
II-fl'r rio- NlELS ANTON CHRISTENSEN, or MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed August 13,1902. Serisllio.119,485.
comnnssoa;
Patented Sept. 3, 907.
.Teatlwhoin it"mag concern: l
Be it known that I, Nrnts Amos QrrsrsrsN in the county of lttilrrauke and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain nowandnsetul Improvements in Compressors, of which the ioll w ing is a specification. I
My invention relates to those air compressors in which a lurality oi air compressing cylinders are ern' ployed and the object thereoi is to provide means for cutting out of service, so far as compression'is concerned, any one or more of the compressing cylinders without disturhim or interfering with the operation of the remaining cylinders or with their separate cooling coils as herein shown.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a front elevation of my combined motor and compressor embodying the within improvements; Fig. 2 is a section taken substantially centrally and longitudinally ot' one of the cylinders;
. and Fig. 3 a detail view oi one of the removable plates,
cooling coil and attached fixtures.
In the present instance to illustrate a compressor having a plurality of compressing cylinders, I have shown my type otcombincd motor andcomprcssor as patented to me on October 1?, 1899, by Letters Patent I No. 635,280, in which are ilt ustratcd two single acting pumps or corrrpressors but in present application, I have chosen to illustrate a scrim or three such pumps or compressors;
- The main frame or compressor easing 1 forms an irrclosed crank chamber 2 in which the crank shall. 3 and connections operate. In'a iorward extension 4 oi the casing are formed or arranged a series of three compression cylinders 5 in which travel pistons 6 connected by pitmen 7 with the crank shaft. '1 he crank is driven by an,clectri(: motor 1" in the manner described in my said patent. 'l he outer endsoi the cylinders are closed by a removable h ad 8 which is made hollow ior water circulatiorrior cooling purposes. This head contains a discharge valve 9 for each cylinder to govern discharge port 10 and thedischarge of air under pressure from said port to the discharge passage ll.
The main casing has a partition or false bottom 12, forming the bottom proper for the crank-shalt chamber and the top of a cooling coil chamber 13 thereby formed by such ialse bottour between it and the bottom proper marked 14.
Immediately below each cylinder, the cooling coil chamber has an opening which is closcd by a row I table plate or cover 15 seeurcd'to the casing.
three cylinders illustrated in the'drawings, so there are three such openingsiclosed by as many plates'or covers ,asshowniriFig'. 1.
Referring to Figs. 2 and 3, each plate or cover 15 has connected to it in such manner as to be removable with it g. cooling coil 16, whose two ends arebrazed or otherwise tastened t6 the cover. There are three oi these cooling ggils, one for eachplate'and consequently one ior each cylinder, and the same are arranged in the cooling eoil chamber 13 hereinhefore described.
The disehargepassage 11 from each cylinder terminates in a. 17 which is screw threaded to receive a coupling nut '15 for securing or coupling thereto the and of a, goo e noel; connection 19 whose other end is secured to its respective plate 15 and in such manner as tocommunicate with the cooling oil attached to that plate.
To=rceive the compressed air irorn all of the compressing cylinders aftcr it has traversed the coolingcoils and thereby become cooled and to conduct such compressed air to a storage reservoir or to a place of use, I employ a discharge pipe 20 common to all the cylinders and extending transversely of the compressor in iront oi the cooling-coil chamber, as illustrated in'Fig. 1.
Each removable plate 15 has an extension 21 in which is a passage 22 communicating between the delivery end of the cooling-coil and the common discharge pipe 20 as best seen in Fig. 21 This communicating passage '22 is governed by'a cutout valve of suitable and approved construction (not shown) and operated and locked by the handles 23, with the result that such passage may be opened or closed as desired by the operator.
The hereinbeiore described arrangement is such that in case it is necrssary to inspect, overhaul or repair the suctionor discharge valve of any one oi the compressing cylinders, such particular cylinder may be cut out oi connection with the other or active compressing cyl-' I thus as to work in cornunction with its companions.
As there-arc i provide a compressor having a plurality of compressing The discharge valve may cylinders independent of .eacliother as to their compressing functions, and each provided with its (iwn.
cooling-c0i1 and its own cut-out valve.
I claim: p I
5 In a compressor, the combination of acasing, a series oi! cylinders arranged'therein tor independently compressing air, a corresponding seriesol pistons, a single crank shaft, a series of connecting rods between the pistons and crankshaft, 11 corresponding serles of separate and Independent 10 delivery pipes orpassages one for each cylinder, 0. discharge pip'e common to all of said delivery pipes and comss i's v t municating therewith along its length, and a series of independently operating and separately controlled cutout valves, one for each delivery pipe wherebyany. ormoreot the cylinders may he cut out of'servlce withoutstopping l!) the compressor or interfering with "the tnnction'or operatlon of the'remainlng cylinder 0r cylinders.
