Description

No. 864,799. PATENTEDSBPT. 9, 1907.
'y J.- L.'PILL1NG. OPERATING MEGHANISM POR TURN TABLES. .av PPPP c.; TTTTT 1mm un. 55555 7.
JAMES L. FILLING, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
OPERATING MECHANISM FOR TURN-TABLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 3, 1907.
Application iiled March 5, 1907. Serial No. 360,794.
To all 'whom it may concern.:
lie it known that I, .lanas L. FILLING, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Operating lvlechanisms for ',lfurnllables, of which the following is a sjlecification.
This invention relates to that type of operating mechanism for turntables in which a motor driven traction wheel is arranged at an end of the turntable and has traction engagement with the circular tram rail of the turntable to impart a turning movement thereto. And the present improvement has for its object to provide a simple and efficient attachment for turntables combining means actuated by a single motor for imparting a turning movement to the turntable, and for operating a windlass in effecting the handling of a dead locomotive or the like, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
ln the accompanying clrawingszMIligure l, is a side elevation of the present apparatus, with parts of the frame or housingbroken away to illustrate the operativo portions of the mechanism. Fig. 2, is a transverse sectional elevation, on line .ft-:r Fig. l.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts in both views.
.Referring to the drawings, l represents a bracket piece adapted for attachment to an end portion of a railway turntable, and provided with vertical pivot eyes :for the pivotal attachment of present apparatus in the vertical ly and horizontally adjustable manner hereinafter described.
2. isa portion of the circular tram rail upon which the apparatus rides.
3. is the truck frame of the apparatus formed preferably by a pair of plate members arranged in separated relation and pivot-ally attached at one end by a horizontal pivot pintle to an intermediate knuckle member ll, which in turn has pivotal connection by a vertical pivot pintle with the pivot ears of the bracket l aforesaid, to afford a universal adjustment to the truck frame.
5, is the traction. wheel journaled in the free end of the truck frame 3, and provided at one side with a gear (l, as shown.
7, is a pinion carried by a countershaft journaled in the truck frame 3, and adapted to have driving engagement with the gear G, aforesaid.
8, is a motor of any ordinary type mounted on the truck frame 3, and having operative engagement with the carrying shaft of the pinion 7 by intermediate gearing 9 and l0, as shown.
ll, is a housing or easing inclosing the gearing 9 and l0, to protectthe same from the elements as well as from accidental interference. Y
The arrangemjent of parts so far described is old in the present class of operating mechanisms for turntables, and is described in the subject matter of my prior Letters Patent No. 787,693 of April 18th 1905; the novelty of the present improvement consisting in the combination with such mechanism, of a windlass mechan* ism carried by the truck frame aforesaid, and havingl operative connection with the motor, and means for alternately connecting one or the other mechanism with said motor.
The particular mechanism shown in the drawing as illustrative of one form oi the present invention comprises a construction as follows:-
l2, is a hub sliding on splined or non-cireular portion of the countershaft I3, and attached to the driving pinion 7 aforesaid, to render the same laterally adjustable. I4, is a windlass drum mounted on the upper part of the truck frame 3, and provided at one end with a gear Wheel l5, arranged in a plane to one side of the gear G, of the track wheel aforesaid, and adapted to mesh with and receive motion from the linion 7 when the saine is moved laterally into engagement therewith..
1G, is an operating lever engaging the sliding hub l2 and adapted to impart lateral adjustment to said hub and to the pinion 7 attached thereto, and so that with said pinion in one position, the same will be in opera tive engagement with the gear (l of the traction wheel to impart rotation thereto and a turning movement to the turntable, and when in its other position said pinion will be out of mesh with the gear 6, and in mesh with the gear wheel l5 to operate the windlass drum I4, in the handling of an adjacent locomotive, or other like use.
I7 is a spring for holding the truck frame and its traction wheel in tractile Contact with the tram rail.
Having thus fully described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
1. turntable attachment comprising a frame adapted for attachment to an end of a turntable, a traction wheel and a windlass carried by said frame, a driving motor mounted on said frame, and means tor operatively engag ing said motor with either the traction wheel or the wind lass, substantially :is set forth.
2. A turntable attachment comprising a frame adapted for attachment to an end of a turntable, a traction wheel and u windlass carried by said frame, a driving,` motor mounted on said trame, intermediate gearing between the traction wheel and the motor and between the windlass and the motor, and means for engaging the motor with thc gearing oi tht` traction wheel or with the gearing' ot the wndlass, substantially as set forth.
J. A turntable attachment comprising a frame adapted for attachment to un end of a turntable, an intermediate universal connection between said frame and the turntable, :t traction wheel and a windlass carried by Suid frame, :i driving;l motor mounted on said frame, and means for operatively engaging` Said motor with either the traeA tien wheel 0r the windiass, substantially as set forth.
L A turntable attachment comprising a frame adapted [or attachment t0 an end 0l :i turntable, n. traction Wheel nud :i winflluss carried by said frame, :t driving motor 10 mounted on Said i'rzune, :t spring imposing traletile Contact upon the traction wheel with the trani rail, und means for operatively engaging said motor with either the traction wheel or the Windluss, substantially as set forth.
Signed :t1: Chicago, Illinois, this Sth day ot' Fehrunigxf' 1907.
