- v a, 5mm gated turnover) BOOT AND sacs-s.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent making put the name.
Tp all whom it may concern 1 Be it known that I, PERRY Vnrron, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have in ventedan Improved Boot-Stretcher; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are snliicient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertain's, to make and use my said invention or improvements without further invention or experiment.
The object of my invention is to provide a last for stretching boots, when they are too'tight in any particular place, without the necessity of driving in the old last, with patches placed on the spots to be stretched, and rubbing them, as is customary when the old last is used for that purpose.
This is effected by constructing the last with a movable toe and instep, which are operated by screws passing out through thelast, or an equivalent device, so that anyv part of the bootmay be'stretched as desired, difl'erent toe-caps being used for boots of various shapes.
My iiniention consists in providing adjustable knobs of metal, which may be attached to any portion of the last that may need special enlarging to accommodate corns or bunions.
To more fully illustrate my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, of which- Figure 1 is a side sectional elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the body ofa last, and
B, the toe, divided half way between the toe and instc 'l lhese two sections are joined together by a metal plate, a, which is fastened into the section A, and works loosely in the section B.
A slot, 0, is cut across the top of the last, directly over the heel.
Ahole is made longitudinally through the section A, and penetrates a little way into the section B. A screw, D, is placed in this hole, and passes through a piece of metal, E, which is out with threads.
The end of this screw-has a slot out around it, and
enters a piece of metal, F, in section B, which prevents it from drawing out. The screw D extends to'n'ear the back part of the last, where a rod, G, having a cross-piece for a handle, is connected to it by ajoint. By turning this handle, the two sections are separated or drawn together.
The instep of the last is cutdown suiiicientlyto allow a piece of metal, H, which conforms to its shape, to fit exactly to the last.
This false, instep or cover has hinged to it, on the under side, at the front, a strap of metal, I, which is screwed to the last, and allows the cover or false instep to be raised or lowered.
A screw passes down through the back part of this cover; andrests upon a'piecenf metal, K, fastened to the last, so that by turning the screw the instep may be raised or lowered.
The toe of the last is covered with a piece of metal, which, as well as the cover of the instep, is pierced with holes, into which the stems-of buttonso'r rounded metal pieces M are placed, in order to enlarge or stretch the boot'where it comes in contact with tender portions of the foot.
By this construction, the toe of the boot can be stretched forward without spreading the boot, and, in stretching the instep, no pressure is exerted inthe shank, which would tend vto break it down.
By the use of the movable buttons M M, any por- 'tion of the boot may be stretched to favor any portion of the foot.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination, ina boot and shoe-stretching last, of the adjustable sections A and B, provided with the plates 11 and F and screw D, with the hinged adjustae ble instep H and adjusting-screw J,substantially as described and for the purposes specified.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
Witnesses: PERRY VEITOH. [L. 8;] Gno. H. STRONG,
J. L. Boom].
