EBEDING MECHANISM FOR. SHAPING MACHINES.

'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RADFORD STOCKBRIDGE, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ARTHUR W. BEAMAN, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
FEEDING MECHANISM FOR SHAPING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 27, 1907.
Application filed October 24:, 1902. Serial No. 128,552.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAnroRD S'roeKBRIDoE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Feeding Mechanism for Shaping-Machines, of which the following is a specification, accompanied by drawings, forming a part of the same, in Which Figure 1 represents a side view of a shaping machine embodying my invention, a portion of the sliding ram having been broken away in order to disclose a part of the mechanism for imparting a downward feeding motion to the cutting tool. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the tool feeding mechanism detached from the machine. Fig. 3 is a view, on a larger scale, of a portion of the tool feeding mechanism and Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the same, the section being taken on the plane of line 44, Figs. 2 and 3.
Similar reference letters and figures refer to similar parts in the different views.
My invention has for its objects to provide an improved mechanism for imparting a downward feed to the cutting tool and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described and pointed out in the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes the supporting framework provided at the top with horizontal ways for a horizontally reciprocating rain 2 provided at one end with a vertically sliding head 3 adapted to carry a cutting tool, these parts being substantially the same as in machines of this class now in common use. A downward feeding motion is imparted to the tool carrying head during the operation of the machine by the intermittent rotation of a screw 4 which is actuated by means of the miter gears 5, intermediate shaft 6 and gear 7 from a short shaft 8 which receives an intermittent motion through mechanism supported by a plate 9 which is removably attached to the side of the ram 2, said plate and mechanism being shown in perspective view in Fig. 2 and on a larger scale in Figs. 3 and 4.
Journaled in the plate 9 is an oscillating shaft 10 carrying on its outer end an arm 11 having its free end 12 arranged to be brought into contact with a dog 13 supported on a plate 14 which is adjustably attached by a bolt 15 to the fixed framework of the machine,
whereby a rocking motion is given to the shaft 10.
On the inner side of the plate 9 is a tubular boss 16 concentric with the shaft 10 and inclosing a coiled spring 17 having one end attached to the shaft 10 and swinging movement of the arm 11 as it is brought into contact with the dog 13 on the backward movement of the ram 2 and serve to return the arm 11 to its normal position as the ram 2 moves forward.
Attached to the inner end of the shaft 10 is a gear 18 engaging a gear 19 on the inner end of a rotating stud 20 provided with an enlarged section 21 having a recess 22 on one side to receive a rocking pawl 23 attached to a spindle 24 which is journaled in the rocking stud 20 and is provided on its outer end with a knob 25.
Turning loosely upon the enlarged section 21 of the rocking stud 20 is an annular gear 26 provided with the internal ratchet teeth 27 adapted to be engaged by the pawl 23 which is held in engagement with the ratchet teeth by the pressure of a spring actuated pin 28 carried in the rocking stud 20 and pressed against the pawl by a spiral spring 29. The pawl 23 is also pro vided with a notch 30 which, when the pawl is rocked to be thrown out of engagement with the ratchet teeth 27, engages the tip of the spring actuated pin 28 which then serves to hold the pawl permanently disengaged from the ratchet teeth 27; the engagement and disengagement of the pawl with the ratchet teeth being accomplished by the attendant by the. rotation of the knob 25. The rotation of the gear 26 communicates motion through the pinion 31 with the shaft 8 which rotates upon a stud 32 held in the plate 9 and carries upon its inner end a beveled gear 33 engaging the beveled gear 7 on the shaft 6 and through the beveled gears 5 rotating the feed screw 4 to impart a downward feeding motion to the cutting tool.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a machine of the class described, the mechanism for automatically operating the down feed of the cutting tool, consisting of an oscillating shaft carried by the reciprocating ram, a radial arm attached to said shaft, a dog adjustahly fixed in the path of said arm whereby said shaft is rocked in one-direction, a spring applied to reverse 9() the movement of said oscillating shaft, a rotating stud geared to said oscillating shaft and provided with a recess for a rocking pawl, a spindle journaled in said rotating stud, a rocking pawl carried by said spindle, an internal ratchet wheel turning loosely on said rotating stud and 9E engaged by said pawl, an annular gear attached to said ratchet wheel, and intermediate connecting mechanism comprising a feed screw between the tool carrying head and said annular gear.
2. In a machine of the class described, the mechanism will,
to said ratchet wheel, and intermediate connecting mech- 10 anisln between said annular gear and the toolcarrying head Dated this 16th day of June 1902.
