PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS Bi.. SAMUEL, OF HIAWATHA, KANSAS.
CHIMNEY-COWL.
To all whom t'tmay concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS B. SAMUEL, a citizen of the `United -States,. residing at Hiawatha, in the county of Brown and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chimney-downs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates Ito improvements in chimney One bject of myinvention is to provide a .chimney cowl with an adjustable clamping mechanism by which the cowl may be readily -secured to chimneys of different sizes.
My invention provides further, a chimney cowl with .ha rotary hood mounted on a suitable base and novel 'Fineans for rotatively supporting the hood upon the base which permits rotation of the hood with the-minimum of friction.
Other novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed. n I
In the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention-Figure 1 is a iront elevation view showing the cowflf'lmounted upon a chimney, the upper part ol which is shown. Fig. 2 is la vertical sectional view taken upon the dotted line' a-b of Fig. 1. v-Fig. 3 is a plan view of the cowl shown mounted on a chimney top. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the cowl with the'clamping plates and bolts removed. Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view takenon the dotted line c-d o'i Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the dotted line e-f of Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is a vertical sectional view taken on the dotted line g-h of Fig. 3. Fig. 8 is a vertical sectional View taken on` the dotted line t-j of Fig. 2.
Similar characters of reference denote similar parts.
The base of the cowlornprises a horizontal portion l adapted tobe mounted upon the top of the chimney 2 and havingh vertical tubular portion 3 provided on .itsupper end with a central'horizontal integral bar 4 forming an axle. support-and provided with a vertihal central downwardly converging hole 5, having a form otherwise than round in cross section, and having tted. y .in it the lower' end of a vertical axle providedat its l. upper end with a circular ball race 7 having mounted therein a series .of balls 8 which are also mounted in an annular ballraceprovided in a recess 9 on the inner side and adjacentfthe upper end of a hood 10 which has secured to its upper outer side the lower end oi'a vertical vane 1l, thedisposition. of which is such as to always throw the open side of the hood from the wind. The hood 10 is provided adjacent its lower end `with an inwardly extending horizontal radial arm12 provided rwith a vertical opening through which the axle 6 extends and `which permits rotation around the axle of the hood. The upper sido of the arm l2 is provided with a ball race disposed conoentrically with the axis of'the axle 6 and having mounted therein a series of Specification of Letters Patent. Application le'd August l2, 1905. Serial N0. 273,968.
Patented Aug. 27, 1907.
If desired to prevent detachmcntof the hood 10 and axle 6 from the base the lower end of the axle below the l axle support 4 may be screw threaded and have mounted thereupon a nut .24, as shown iu Fig. 2 the upper sido. of which bears upon the lower sido ol' thc axle support. .The lower end lof the hood .l0 cucirclcs but docs not. touch the periphery oi the upper oud o1' the tubular porthe two vertical sides and adapted to rest upon the top of the base 1. The clamping plates 15 are each adjustable toward and from the two sides of the chimney Each clamping plate 15 is provided in its horizontal balls 13 adapted to bear against the periphery of the 17 are screw threaded and have mounted thereon rev' eral movement of the hood at its lower end and permit- .ting its rotation around'the axle without coming in contact with the axle or the base. i i
Various modifications of my invention may be made without departing from its spirit.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, iszl. in' a chimney cowl, the combination with a'base adnp'tcd'to he secured to the top of the chimney and havim,y a vertical tubular, portion provided with a transverse axl:l support, ofA a vertical axle secured rigidly to said axle support and provided with a ball race, a 'rotary hood encircling said tubular portion and said axle and provided .adjacent its lower end with an inwardly extending transverse arm having a vertical hole through which the `axle extends and having on its `inner vsidevadjacent its upper end a hall race, and a series of balls`llocated in said two hall races and supporting said. hood.
2. In a chimney cowl, the combination with a base adapted to rest upon the top of the chimney, of adjustable means for clamping the base,` to the chimney, the base having a vcrticaltubular portion, a vertical axle secured to said hase centrally in said tubular portion and provided at its'upper end with a circular hall race, a rotary hood encirclingr said tubular portion and said axle and having adjacent its upper end a hall race located on its inner side, and provided adjacent its lower endv with any inwardly extending arm having a vertical hole through which the axle extends, said arm having on its upper side a hall racc encircling said vertical hole, and'two series of balls one series being mounted in the race on the axle and in the race in the upper end of the hood and supportin;r the hood, the other series of balls-being mounted in the racc on said inwardly extending arm and arrangedv around the periphery ofand adapted to hear against the said axle.
:L In a chimney cowl, the combination with a base adapted to rest upon the top of the chimney and having a vertical tuhnlar portion having a' transverse axle support, of means for clamping the base to the chimney, a rotary hood having a vane secured thereto and encircling the tubular portion and the axle and provided with two recesses for receiving the axle therein, and two series of recesses respectively',
balls interposed between the axle and the hood in said one of said series supporting the hood and the other series preventing lateral movement of the hood relative to the axle.
4. In a chimney cowl, `the combination with the hase adapted to rest uponthe vtop of the chimney and provided with aver-tical tubular portion having a transverse axle support provided with a central tapering vertical hole, of means for clamping the base to the chimney, a vertical axle the lower end of which is tapered and fitted vin said tapering hole in the axle support, locking means for Vpreventing upward movement of the axle relative to its support, a hood encircling*thertubularl. portion and the axle, and bearing halls interposed between the axle and the hood and supporting the hood.
5. The combination with the hase adapted to be supported on the top of the c himney and provided with a vertical tubular portion having a transverse axle support I provided with a central downwardly converging vertical hole having a cross section other than round, of means for clamping the base to the chimney, ,a vertical axle the lower end of which is fitted to the hole in the axle support, means engaging, the underside of the axle support and the axle for preventing upward .movement of the axle,
and a hood encircling the tubular portion and the axle 'and rotatively mounted on the axle.
(l. The combination with a hase adapted to he supported on the v.top of the chimney and having a vertical tubular portion provided with a transverse axle support. of means for clamping the base to the chimney, a vertical axle provided with means fork being secured centrally at its lower end to said axle support peripheral flange and' adjacent its upper end a circular hall race disposed concentric with the axis of` the axle, a rotary. hood encircling said tubular portion of the base and having on its inner side a vertical vrecess ior, receiving the upper end of the axle and provided adjacent its lower end with a radial transverse arm having a vertical hole to receive the axle and ,located below said flange and provided Aon its upper side with a hall race encircling` the axle, and two series of balls, one mounted on said ball race on said arm and the' other series' mounted in said recess and on the hall race at the upper end of the axle.
