WILLIAM MORIAR'IY,
PATENT OFFICE.
or BANGOR, MAINE.
COMBINED PADDLE AND PICK-POLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 27, 1907.
Application filed September 29,1906. Serial No. 336,760.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MORIARTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Bangor, in theeounty of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Paddle and Pick-Pole, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a combined paddle and pick-pole, and is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is an elevation of pick and one side of sheath with nut in cross-section. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line a: x of tip of paddle with pick. Fig. 4 is another form of my device showing an elevation of pick and one side of sheath, with solid portion of sheath in cross-section. is a cross-section of same on line y 3 Similar letters refer to corresponding parts throughout the figures.
In construction I provide a metallic sheath A shaped to inclose the tip of the paddle-blade B.
In the form shown in Fig. 2 the tip is notched or recessed to receive anut O, and, the sheath being bored to receive it, the pick D with screw-threaded Fig. 5
shank d is screwed into the nut which is held in position by the sheath A.
In the form shown in Fig. 4 the sheath is cast or otherwise formed with a solid portion a bored and threaded to receive the shank of the pick, and the tip of the paddle is notched or slotted to conform to and fit the part a. The pick is then screwed into the solid part as before. In both forms the pick is remov able, and, if broken is easily replaced. In my device the traveler in the woods has paddle, pick-pole, and to some extent a setting-pole-all in onea considerable advantage, especially on carries, where all weight counts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a combined paddle and pick-pole the combination of a paddle-blade having a notched tip a metallic sheath for the paddletip; a nut shaped to fit the notch in the paddletip and repose within the sheath; and a pick having a screw-threaded shank and adapted to fit and screw into said nut.
