My invention relates more especially to the ribbon mechanism 'of that class of typewriting machines employing a ribbon vibrator or carrier, which terms as used herein, comprehend any device operable by the printing keys for moving the ribbon to cover and uncover the printing point.
One object of my invention is to provide an improved construction wherein a ribbon having a-plurality of fields of different characteristics, may, under the influence of a printing key, be moved to cover the printing point with any desired field of the ribbon.
Another object is to provide means to dispense at will with the crosswise feed of the ribbon in that class of machines employing a ribbon vibrator and wherein the ribbon has both a crosswise and a. lengthwise feed.
A further object is to provide means for enabling a. ribbon of more than one color, commonly .called a polychrome ribbon, to be used in the last-named class of machines.
To the above and other ends the invention consists in the features of construction, combinations of devices and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of a typewriting machine embodying my invention, parts of the machine being omitted. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view corresponding to Fig. l, but showing parts of the ribbon mechanism in different relations from those in which they appear in said Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the machine showing the keyboard sectioned away, parts of the machine being omitted and other parts being broken away. Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the parts of the ribbon mechanism hereinafter called a link guide. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary top plan view of parts of the ribbon mechanism as they appear when the top plate of themachine is removed, certain parts being shown in section. Figs. 6 and 7 are detail views of certain of the parts in the positions shown in Fig. 5. Figs. 8 and 9 are detail views corresponding to Figs. 6 and 7, respectively, but showing parts in different relations from those in which they appear in the last named figures. Figs. 10 and 11 are detail views corresponding to Figs. 6 and 7, respectively, but showing the parts in yet different relations from those in which they appear in Figs. 69 inclusive.
I have shown my invention as embodied in a Monarch typewriting machine, but I desire it to be understood that it may be adapted to other forms of writing machines.
In the drawings, 1 is the base of the machine supporting corner posts 2 which sustain a top plate 3. Key lovers 4 are fulcrumed on a fulcrum plate 5 and each key lever is provided with a restoring spring 6. Pivoted'at 7 to each key lever is a sub-lever 8, the
.lower portion whereof co-acts with a fixed abutment 9 and the upper end whereof is connected by a link 10 with a type bar 11. Each type bar is pivotally mounted in a hanger 12 which is one of a series of hangers arranged in a segment of a circle and suitably secured to a segmental type bar support 13. The type bars are normally supported at their free ends by a segmental type rest 14. Posts 15, fixed to the base 1 and rising therefrom, have secured to their upper ends by screws 16 a guide comb .plate 17 which serves to properly guide and limit the movements of the sub-levers 8. The type bars 11 are adapted to cooperate with the front face of a cylindrical platen 18, diagrammatically illustrated, said platen being mounted in a platen carriage (not shown) which carriage is operatively connected with a toothed escapement member 19. Adapted to cooperate with the escapement member 19 are feed dogs 20 which are mounted at the top of a pivoted dog rocker 21, said dog rocker having a horizontally disposed arm 22 which is connected by a link 23 with the universal bar frame 24, the latter being pivoted in the base of the machine at 25. The frame 24 carries a universal bar 26 which extends from side to side of the machine beneath the series of key levers 4 and the spacing levels (not shown) and is adapted to be actuated by said levers when they are depressed during printing or spacing operations. The platen 18 and the platen carriage are suitably connected with a spring drum (not shown), which tendsconstantly to draw them across the machine to the left so that when the universal bar 26 is operated the escapement mechanism above described is caused to be actuated in a known manner to permit of letter spacing movements of the carriage.
Ribbon spools 27 arranged above the top plate 3 at each side of the machine and forwardly of the platen receive a ribbon 28, which, as herein shown, is divided longitudinally into stripes or fieldsa and b of different characteristics; for example, the field a may be of one 'color such as black and the field b of a different color as red, or the field a may be copying ribbon and the field b record. ribbon. The ribbon 28 may be fed longitudinally from either spool to the other by any suitable means, that illustrated in the drawings having the general characteristics of the ribbon feeding mechanism of the Monarch machine. Each ribbon spool 27 is carried by and turns with an upright shaft 29 which rotates in a fixed bearing 30 and has secured at its lower end a small beveled gear 31. The gear 31 meshes with a beveled pinion 32 secured to the forward end of a horizontal shaft 33, which shaft is journaled in lugs 33 depending from the top plate 3. Said shaft carries at its rear end a beveled pinion 34, the latter being adapted to mesh with a beveled driving pinion 35 mounted on the driving or power shaft 36 which has its hearings in lugs 37 depending from the top plate.
It will be understood that each ribbon spool is connected with a gear train like that above described, each of said gear trains being adapted to be actuated from a driving pinion 35 on the driving shaft 36. It will further be understood that the driving shaft 36 is capable of longitudinal movement and that the longitudinal position of said shaft determines which driving pinion 35 will be in mesh with its cotiporating pinion 34 and which ribbon spool will be turned to wind the ribbon thereon. Rotary movement is transmitted to the shaft 36 through beveled pinions 38 and 39, the pinion 38 being oporatively connected with the driving shaft and the pinion 39 being operatively connected as usual with the spring drum (not shown).
' Midway between the ribbon spools the ribbon 28 is threaded through a ribbon vibrator or carrier 40 which is guided and supported in the upright arms 4]. of a bracket 42, said bracket being secured to the top plate by screws 43. The lower portion of the vibrator 40 is bifurcated and provided with a cross pin 44 bridging the bifurcation, said cross-pin being engaged by the slotted forward end of an operating lever 45, pivoted at 46 in a lug 47 depending from the underside of the top plate. The rear arm of the operating lever is formed with an elongated slot 48 and engaging with the slot is a pin 49 secured to the top of a link 50, the lower end of said link being pivoted at 51 to the universal bar frame 24.
The link 50 is adapted to be swung about its pivot 51 in order to cause the pin 49 to move longitudinally of the slot 48 so as to engage the operating lever 45 at varying distances from its pivot or fulcrum 46, and thereby to vary the throw of the ribbon carrier or vibrator 40. This swinging or vibratory movement of the link 50 is preferably caused by a combined eccentric and cam member which is designated as a whole by the reference number 52- and is slidably mounted on the driving shaft 36. The member 52 comprises an eccentric or cam portion 53, a cylindrical portion 54 and a second larger cylindrical portion 55, the portion 53 being intermediate the portions 53 and 55 and being connected therewith by tapered or sloping portions 56 and 57. A sleeve portion 58 extends from one side of the member 52 and is provided with a circumferential groove or depression 59. A screw 60 passes into the sleeve portion 58 and enters an elongated slot or groove 61 in the driving shaft 36 (Fig. 3). The member 52 is thereby slidably connected with the driving shaft 36 and is caused to rotate-with said shaft but may be moved longitudinally of the shaft without affecting the latter. The shaft 36 may also be moved longitudinally Without affecting the member 52. The link 50 is disposed at the front of the member 52 and is at all times maintained in engagement with some part of the .latter by a coiled spring 62 (Fig. 1), one end of which is hooked around the link 50 and the other end around the escapement link 23, said spring constantly tending to draw said link 50 rearwardly about its pivot 51. The link 50 is restrained from lateral or sidewise movement by a guide member or yoke which is designated as a whole by the numeral 63, and is best shown in Fig. 4. The guide member 63 is secured to the guide comb 17 by headed screws 64 which pass through holes 65 in the lower portion of the guide member and are received in threaded openings in the guide comb 17. The guide member 63 is provided at its lower part with rearwardly extending fingers 66 which are adapted to embrace and guide the link 50 beneath the member 52 and said guide member 63 further comprises two upwardly extending and rearwardly curved fingers 67 which co-act with and guide said link 50 near the forward side and the top of the member 52, as will best be understood from a consideration of Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
The longitudinal movement of the member 52 is controlled by a forked switching member which comprises a vertically disposed arm 68 terminating at the top in a collar portion 69 and at the lower end in a fork 70 which fits into and embraces thegroove or depression 59 in the member 52. 'The collar portion 69 of the forked switching member is suitably secured on the inner end of a pull and push rod 71 which extends horizontally beneath the top plate and terminates near the side of the machine in a collar 72 (Fig. 5), said collar being provided with an upwardly extending pin 73. The rod 71 has its bearings in one of the lugs 37 and in another lug 37* to one side of the latter. The rod 71 is provided with limiting collars 71 and 71 which are adapted to contact with the lug 37. The pin 73 on the outer end of the rod 71 is engaged by the bifurcated end of one arm of a horizontally disposed bell crank lever 74, said lever being provided with a hub-like portion 75 which receives a headed pivot screw 76, the latter screwing into the under side of the top plate of the machine. The free end of the other arm of the bell crank lever 74 is provided with a pin 77 which enters a perforation in the rear end of a horizontally disposed and forwardly extending link 78. The link 78 is maintained in engagement with the pin 77 by a retaining spring 79 which is suitably secured to the bell crank lever 74 as by a rivet 80, the free end of said spring being perforated to embrace the pin 77 and bear against the link 78, thereby preventing accidental detachment of said link. The forward end of the link 73 'is perforated to receive a pin 81 fixed at the outer end of one of the arms of a second boll crank lever 82, the latter being provided with a hub portion 83 which receives a pivot screw 84, said screw screwing into the under side of the top plate. A retaining spring 85, secured to the bell crank lever 82 by a rivet 86, acts similarly to the spring 79, serving to maintain the link 78 in proper position and to prevent accidental detachment thereof from the bell crank lever 82. The ion wardly projecting arm 87 of the lever 82 terminates in a finger knob or handle 88, and just back of said handle the under side of the arm 87 is formed with a tooth-like portion 89.
The machine is provided with a front plate 90 which is secured to the framework by screws 91 and said front plate is cut away at 92 (Fig. 3) to permit of the passage of the arm 87 of the forward bell crank lover. The edge of the cut-away 92 is formed with notches 93, 94
and 95 with which the tooth S9 is adapted to engage. The bell crank arm 87 is a spring arm and its tension tends to force it in a downward direction so that of itself it is maintained in engagement with one or another of the notches 93, 94 and 95 in the front plate, which latter serves in effect as a positioning member. The arrangement of the parts is such that the finger portion or handle 88 is just forward of the front plate 90 and beneath one side of the top plate, being conveniently situated for ready manipulation.
The operation of the mechanism above described may be briefly explained. When the arm 87 of the forward bell crank lever is engaged with the right-hand notch 93, the parts will be in the relations indicated in Figs. 1, 3, 5, 6 and 7. It will be noted from an inspection of these figures that the link 50 is engaged with the face of the cylindrical portion 55, being held thereagainst by the spring 62 and prevented from moving laterally by the fix'ed guide 63. As best appears in Fig. 1, the link is thereby maintained in engagement with the lever 45 near the forward end of the slot 48 and close to the fulcrum 46 of said lever. The parts are so proportioned and arranged that when the print ing keys are operated with the parts positioned as described, the vibrator 40 will be swung upward or thrown far enough to bring the field a, or the black field of the ribbon, into operative position, that is, into position so that said ribbon field will be struck by the types as ey are operated to print. The throw of the vibrator under the actuation of the lever will be a constant one and the path described by the types will be in a straight line longitudinal of the field a.
When it is desired to print on the red field, that is, the field b of the ribbon, the spring arm 87 is pressed upward until the tooth 89 is disengaged from the notch- 93, and the bell crank lever 82 is then swung leftward middle notch 94. As the bell crank lever 82 is swung leftward, the rear bell crank lever 74 is, through the link 78, also swung leftward and acts on the pin 73 to impart a leftward longitudinal movement to the rod 71, moving the member 52 to the position indicated in Fi 8 and causing the link to be drawn rearwardly by the spring 62 along the cam portion 57 of the member 52 until said link engages with the face of the smaller cylindrical portion 54, as indicated in Figs. 8, 9 and 2. As appears clearly from the last named figure, the link in this position is further from the fulcrum 46 of the operating lever 45, and the face of the portion with which the link 50 is now in contact being cylindrical, said link will at all times, while in engagement therewith, throw the ribbon vibrator a fixed distance and so as always to bring the red field or stripe 5 into operative position,
causing the type impressions to describe a straight path longitudinal of said field b.
While the invention is thus adapted for use with a ribbon having fields of different characteristics, it is also adapted for use with a ribbon of uniform character throughout and in such case it may be desirable to cause an automatic crosswise feeding movement of the ribbon from one of its edges to the other; or even when a polychrome ribbon is employed it may be desirable in some instances, as in ornamental or fancy work, to impart a crosswise feed to the ribbon over both colors. If it is desired to cause a crosswise as well as a longitudinal feeding movement of the ribbon the finger button 88 is pressed upward until the tooth 89 is disengaged from the notch 94 and the bell crank lever 82 is then swung leftward about its pivot until its tooth engages with the left-hand notch 95. This causes a further leftward movement of the member 52, the portion 56 whereof slides against the link 50, the parts being so proportioned and arranged that when the lever 82 is engaged with the notch 95, the limiting collar 71" will be in contact with the lug 37' and the eccentric portion 53 of the member 52 will be in engagement with the link 50. The parts will then be in the relations indicated in Figs. 10 and 11. The greatest radius of the eccentric portion 53 is equal to the radius of the cylindrical portion 55 and the least radius of said eccentric portion is equal to the radius of the cylindrical portion 54. Consequently during the operation of the machine, during which the eccentric portion 53 will be slowly rotated with the other portions of the member 52, the link 50 will be moved automatically progressive distances towards and away from the fulcrum 46 of the operating lever 45 and will operate said lever to throw the ribbon vibrator varying distances and so that the type impressions will describe a serpentine or wavy path from side to side of the ribbon.
From the positions indicated in Figs. 10 and 11, wherein the parts are shown as they are related when a crosswise and lengthwise feed of the ribbon is obtained, the mechanism may be moved back to the positions indicated in Figs. 8 and 9 or in Figs. 6 and 7 by manipulating the lever 82 in the reverse of the manner above described and so that the link 50 may be causedto engage either with the portion 54 or the portion 55 of the member 52. It will be noted that during the operation of the mechanism, the 1ink'50 is prevented from moving laterally or transversely of the operating lever about its pivot until the tooth 89 engages w1th the 45 by the fixed guide member 63 with which guide member said link 50 is at all times engaged.
It will be seen that to obtain the results above described 1 provide mechanism which is simple in construction, and readily assembled in the machine.
Various changes may be made in the arrangement and construction of the devices hereinbefore described without departing from my invention. For example, any other form of eccentric or cam may be substituted for the plain eccentric 53. One other kind of eccentric or cam is the triangular one shown in Fig. 3 of the patent of Gabrielson, No. 662,147. Accordingly, in the claims, it is to be undertsood that either of the terms cam face, eccentric portion or eccentric face comprehends any device which may be employed to give a camming effect equivalent to that of the eccentric portion 53.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination of printing keys, a ribbon vibrator, a single lever operative on said vibrator, a link, and means for causing said link to operate automatically upon said lever at varying distances from its fulcrum and for causing said link to operate upon said lever at any one of a plurality of fixed distances from its fulcrum, said means comprising a member having a cam face and a plurality of cylindrical faces.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination of printing keys, a ribbon vibrator, a single lever operative on said vibrator, a link, means for causing said link to operate automatically upon said lever at varying distances from its fulcrum and for causing said link to operate upon said lever at fixed distances from its fulcrum, said means comprising a rotary member having an eccentric face and a plurality of cylindrical faces, the radius of one cylindrical face being equal to the greatest radius of the eccentric face, and the radius of the other cylindrical face being equal to the least radius of the eccentric face.
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination of printing keys, a ribbon vibrator, a single lever for operating the same, a link, 'and a rotary member having a concentric portion and an eccentric portion, which portions are adapted to cooperate with said link to control its relations with said lever.
4. In a typewriting machine, the combination of printing keys, a ribbon vibrator, a single lever for operating said vibrator, a link for operating said lever, and a rotary member having concentric and eccentric portions which are connected by sloping portions and are adapted to cooperate with said link to control its relations'with said lever.
5. In a typewriting machine, the combination of printing keys, a ribbon vibrator, a single lever for operating said vibrator, a link for operating said lever, a spring constantly tending to draw said link in one .direction, and a rotary member having concentric and eccentric portions which portions are adapted to coiiperate with said link to control it and regulate the ei'fect of said spring.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination of printing keys, a ribbon vibrator, a single lever for operating said vibrator, a link for operating said lever, a rotary member having concentric and eccentric portions, and hand operated means for moving said rotary member transversely of said link so that any desired portion of said rotary member may coiiperate with said link.
7. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a rib I bon vibrator, a lever for operating the same, a key actuated universal bar, a link connected to said universal bar and operable on said lever, means operable on said link to control its position longitudinally of said lever, a bell crank lever connected with said means, a second bell crank lever, and a link connecting said bell crank levers,
said last recited bell crank lever being operable from the front of the machine.
8. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, a lever for operating the same, a key actuated universal bar, a link connected to said universal bar and operable on said lever, means operable on said link to control its position longitudinally of said lever, a bell crank lever connected with said means and pivoted to the top plate of the machine, a second bell crank lever pivoted to the top plate of the machine near the front thereof and having a portion extending forwardly from beneath the top plate, and a link connecting said bell crank levers.
9. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, a lever for operating the same, a key actu' ated universal bar, a link connected to said universal bar and means operable on said link to control its position longitudinally of said lever, a bell crank lever connected with said means and having a perforated huh portion, a pivot screw therefor, a second bell crank lever having a perforated hub portion, a pivot screw therefor, and a link connecting said bell crank levers, one of said bell crank levers having a finger portion at the front of the machine.
10. In a typewritlng machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, a lever for operating the same, a key actu' ated universal bar, a link connected to said universal bar and operable on said lever, means operable on said link to control its position longitudinally of said lever, a bell crank lever connected with said means, a forwardly extending link connected with said bell crank lever, a retaining spring adapted to maintain said forwardly extending link in engagement with said bell crank lever, a second bell crank lever operable from the front of the machine and connected with said forwardly extending link, and a retaining spring adapted to maintain said link in engagement with said last recited bell crank lever.
11. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, a lever for operating the same, a key actuated universal bar, a link connected to said universal bar and operable on said lever, means operable on said link to control its position longitudinally of said lover, a bell crank lever having one arm connected with said means and having a pin fixed to its other arm, a forwardly extending link engaging said pin, a fiat spring secured to said bell crank lever and adapted to maintain said forwardly extending link in engagement with said pin, a second bell crank lever having one arm provided with a finger portion and the other arm with a pin with which the forward end of said forwardly extending link engages, and a flat spring secured to said last recited bell crank lever and adapted to maintain said forwardly extending link in engagement with said pin.
12. in a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, a lever for operating the same, a key actuated universal bar, a link connected to.said universal bar and operable on said lever, means operable on said link to control its position longitudinally of said lever, a bell crank lever pivoted to a fixed part and connected with said means, a forwardly extending link connected with said bell crank lover, a second bell crank lever pivoted to a fixed part and having one arm connected with said forwardly extending link, the other arm of said second bell crank lever being a spring member and provided with a toothlikc portion, and a notched positioniiig melnbcr with which said tooth-like portion is adapted to engage.
13. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, a lever for operating the same, a key actuated universal bar, a link connected to said universal bar and operable on said lever, means operable on said link to control its position longitudinally of said lever, a bell crank lever having one arm connected with said means and the other arm connected with a forwardly extending link, a second bell crank lever having one arm connected with said link, the other arm of said last recited bell crank lever being a spring arm and having a linger portion and a toothed portion, and a plate at the front of the machine provided with notches with which said toothed portion is adapted to engage, the engagement being maintained by the spring arm of the bell crank lever.
14. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, a single lever for operating the same, a link, means for causing said link to operate automatically upon said lever at progressively increasing and decreasing distances from the fulcrum of said lever, means for throwing out of operative relation said automatic means and for fixing the relation between said link and said lever and for altering said fixed relation at will, and a fixed guide coilperating with said link to prevent movement thereof transversely of said lever.
15. In a typewriting machine, the combination of printing keys, a ribbon vibrator, a single lever for operating said vibrator, a link, means for causing said link to operate automatically upon said lover at varying distances from its fulcrum and for causing said link to operate upon said lever at fixed distances from its fulcrum, and a fixed guide coiiperating with said link to prevent movement thereof transversely of said lever.
1G. in a typewriting machine, the combination of print ing keys, a ribbon vibrator, a single lever for operating said vibrator, a link, a rotary member having concentric and eccentric portions which are adapted to operate said link to control its position longitudinally of said lever, and a guide secured to a fixed part and adapted to control the position of said link transversely of said lever.
17. In a typewriting machine, the combination with printing keys, a ribbon vibrator, a single lever for operating said vibrator, a link, a spring constantly tending to draw said link in one direction, a rotary member having concentric and eccentric portions which portions are adapted to cooperate with said link to control its position longitudinally of said lever and to regulate the elfect of said spring, and a slotted guide secured to a fixed part of the machine and adapted to coiiperate with said link to control its position transversely of said lever.
18. In a typewriting machine, the combination of printing keys, a ribbon vibrator, a single lever for operating the same, a link, a rotary member adapted to coiiperate with said link to control its position longitudinally of said lever, hand actuated means for regulating the position of said rotary member, and a slotted guide secured to a fixed part of the machine and constantly engaged with said link so as to control the position of the latter transversely of said lever.
19. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator; a lever for operating said ribbon vihrator; a member for operating said lever; means for controlling the distance of said operating member from the fulcrum of said lever, said means including a rotary shaft and a sleeve splined on said rotary shaft, said sleeve hav' ing concentric portions of different radii and an eccentric portion; and means for moving said sleeve longitudinally of said shaft to bring one or another of said portions into engagement with said operating member.
20. In a typewriting machine, the combination of keys; :1 universal bar operated by said keys; a ribbon vibrator; a lever for operating said ribbon vibrator; a link connecting said lever with said universal bar; means for controlling the distance of said link from the fulcrum of said lever, said means including a rotary shaft and a sleeve splined on said rotary shaft, said sleeve having concentric faces of different radii and an eccentric face; and means for sliding said sleeve longitudinally of said shaft to bring any one of said faces into position to engage said link.
21. In a typewritiug machine, the combination of keys; a universal baroperated by said keys; a ribbon vibrator; a lever for operating said ribbon vibrator; a link connecting said lever with said universal bar; and means for controlling the distance of said link from the fulcrum of said lever, said means including a rotary shaft, a sleeve splined on said rotary shaft, said sleeve having concentric faces of different radii and an eccentric face, means for sliding said sleeve longitudinally of said shaft to bring any one of said faces into position to engage said link, and a spring for holding said link against said sleeve.
22. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, a lever for operating the same, an actuator for vibrating said lever, and a rotary member having cylindrical portions of difierent diameters adapted to co operate with said actuator to control its relations with said lever and cause the ribbon to be used along dinterent longitudinal lines or fields.
23. In a. typewrlting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, a lever for operating the same, a link for operating said lever, a rotary member having a plurality of operating portions each different from the other and adapted one at a time to coiiperate with said link, and means for maintaining the link in cooperative relation with the selected portion of said rotary member.
24. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, a lever for operating the same, a link for operating said lever and adapted to engage therewith at differentdistances from the fulcrum of said lever, a rotary member having a plurality of operating portions adapted to co-act with said link one at a time, a spring for keeping said link in contact with the selected portion of said rotary member, andvmcans for shifting the said rotary member so as to cause one or another of the ditiercnt operating portions to co-act with said link and thereby cause the said link to operate upon the said lever at different distances from its fulcrum.
25. In a typewrlting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, a lever for operating the same provided with a longitudinal slot, a link connected to said lever at said slot, a rotary member having a plurality of operating portions adjustable at will to co-aet with said link, and a Spring for holding said link in operative relation with the operating portions of said rotary member.
26. in a typewrlting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, a lever for operating the same, a link for operating said lever, adjustable means for causing said link to operate upon said lever at different distances from its fulcrum, and means embracing said link to prevent lateral movement thereof when said adjustable means is adjusted.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, a lever for operating the same and having a longitudinal slot, a link connected to said lever at said slot, a device for controlling the point of connection of said link with said lever at said slot, whereby the lever is at will actuated by said link at different distances from the fulchim of the lever, means for moving said controlling devicc transversely of said link, and embracing means for holding said link against lateral movement when the said controliingdevice is shifted.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, a slotted lever, a link, a rotary link controller, a spring for holding the link against said con troller, means for shifting said controller laterally, and a guide for holding said link against lateral movement when the controller is shifted.
25). In a typewriting machine, the combination of ribbon vibrating means including an actuating link, a rotatory and shiftable device coacting with said link and comprising two concentric portions and one eccentric portion.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of print ing keys, a ribbon vibrator, a single lever operative on said vibrator, a link, and means for causing said link to operate automatically on said lever at progressive varying distances from its fulcrum and for causing said link to operate on said lever at fixed distances from its fulcrum, said means comprising a rotary member having an eccentric face and a plurality of concentric faces, the radius of one concentric face being equal to the greatest radius of the eccentric face and the radius of another concentric face being equal to the least radius of the eccentric face.
