HAT-BRIM-STRETCH ING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 20, 1907.
Application filed April 29,1907. S i O- 370,912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. MORLOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danbury, in the county of Fairbury and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Brim- Stretching Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inven tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hat making machinery, and more particularly to what are known as hat brim and tip stretching machines, and has for its object to provide a device of this kind in which the actuating mechanism for the reciprocatory stretchers is placed above the stretchers so as to be free from the water that is used during the progress of stretching the hat, and the chemicals and other foreign substances thereinv In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, Figure 1 is a broken front elevation of a machine embodying the invention; and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same taken at one side of the center.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the frame of a brim and tip stretching machine, which may be of any desired construction, and is provided with the usual head or body 2. which is mounted upon the upper end of a shaft 3, and is adapted to be raised vertically to any desired extent by means of the ordinary foot lever, 4.
The top of the frame is provided with two standards 5'-5, which project upwardly from'the rear portion thereof, and are provided at their upper ends with bearings, (i, in which is mounted the operating shaft, 7.
The shaft is provided with two cranks or eccentrics, 8-8 outside of the bearings, 6-6. Two rods, 9-9 are reciprocally mounted in the frame as shown at 9 and in suitable bearings, 10, upon the intermediate portion of the standards and are connected at their upperends by a cross piece, 11. Depending from the center of the cross piece 11 is the usual clamping mechanism 12, which is adapted to co-act with the head 2 in stretching the hat in the ordinary manner and therefore need no further description.
Connected with the eccentrics 8 are two pitmen 13- 13 which are connected at their lower ends with the reciprocatory rods 9 in any suitable manner. as by pivot bearings. 14. Power is applied to the shaft 8 for reciprocating the clamps 12 by the usual fast-and-loose pulleys, 15 and 16, and a suitable fly-wheel, 17 is also preferably provided.
By constructing a stretching machine in this manner, it will be seen that the operator can control the operation of the machine in the same manner as machines which have heretofore been constructed with the driving shaft journaled in the lower part of the frame. But instead of the water flowing from the material down upon the bearings for said operating mechanism, the shaft 7 and its bearings, (i, will be entirely above the flow of water, thereby avoiding the possibility of such water washing off the oil from the bearings and depositing grit and other foreign material in the bearings, which cause them to wear out very rapidly. The standards can be formed integral with the rest of the frame, or they can be formed separately and secured thereto as may be desired, the latter construction being shown in the drawings.
Having described my invention. I claim:
In ahat brim and crown stretching machine, a frame provided with two standards. each standard having two bearings, one upon its upper end and one on its intermediate portion. a shaft journaled in the bearings at the top of the standards and provided with two eccentrics, one outside of each hearing. two wheels and a loose pulley on said shaft. a rod reciprocally mounted in the frame and in each of the intermediate bearings, a yoke connected with the upper ends of said rods and provided with holding mechanism. a pitn'mn pivotally connected with each rod and with one of the eccentrics, a head for co acting with said holding mechanism. and means for reciprocating the head independently of said holding mechanism.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM M. MORLOCK.
