DISK-GRINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 20, 1907.
Application filed May 4,1906. Serial No. 315,228.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHESTER O. CARL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairfield, Jefferson county, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disk-Grinders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for grinding disks and consists of an attachment for grinding machines adapted to support a disk rotatably in position and presented properly to grinding or buffing tools and to permit necessary adjustments, as fully set forth hereinafter, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,-
Figure 1 is a perspective elevation of a grinding machine showing my improved attachment in one position; Fig. 2 an elevation showing the attachment in another position; Fig. 3, a detached view showing the means of clamping the attachment upon the machine; Fig. 4 a detached view illustrating one of the adjustable parts; Fig. 5 a sectional view illustrating the means for securing a frictional resistance to the rotation of the disk; and Fig. 6 a section on the line 66, Fig. 5.
The standard or upright W is suitably constructed with cylindrical bearings 2, 2 to support a rotary shaft 1, to the outer end of which may be connected either a grinder or buffer wheel or other tool, as may be desired, and combined with these parts are supporting means for the article to be ground, polished, or otherwise operated upon. These supporting means comprise a bracket or bar A, a slotted bar D supporting at one end a spindle 3, a box E adapted to said spindle and having a bearing extended to form an arm F, and with these parts may be combined a bracket G and a weighted bell crank H.
The bracket A is adapted to be secured adjustably to one of the bearings 2 of the standard W. As shown, the threaded arms of a U-shaped clip O are passed through openings of the bracket A and provided with nuts 4 by which the bracket may be securely clamped to the bearing 2, either in the position shown in Fig. 1 in dotted lines, or in that shown in Fig. 2. The bar D is secured to the bracket A by means of a box B having a rib 5 which extends into the slot of the bar, and a threaded stud 6 to which is adapted a nut 7 for securing the box in position on the bar after adjustment, and this box has a recess for receiving the end of the bracket A, and may be secured thereto by a set screw 8. The box E has a socket to receive the spindle 3 which supports the disk or other object X to be ground, and the parts may be so adjusted, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, that the lower edge of the disk X may be pressed to a grinding wheel Y on the spindle 1, or the disk may have its axis nearly on a line with the spindle 1 to present its side portion to a buffer or other tool U, In either case the box E will swing about the spindle 3 and in order that the article may be carried across the spindle as it is l is attached to the bar D, as shown, and the tension of the said spindle may be adjusted by turning a nut 10 on a threaded rod 12 extending through the arm I and connected to the spring.
In order further to facilitate the swinging of the box E, the vertical arm of a bell crank H may bear against the side of the arm F exerting a pressure proportioned to the adjustment of a weight K upon the lower arm of the bell crank, and the bracket G is connected by a suitable clamping device h with the bar D so as to be adjustable to any desired position.
he article X is secured to the hub of the spindle V by means of a threaded stud 21 projecting from said hub and receiving a nut 22, the stud extending through a central opening of the article X, and the nut being then screwed on to clamp the article to the spindle.
It will be seen that the bracket A may be brought to any desired position radially in respect to the spindle, and that by adjusting the bar D upon the bracket A the box E and the article carried thereby may be presented at any desired angle or in any desired po sition in respect to the tool upon the spindle 1, and that said box may be swung to carry the article across the tool upon the spindle, whatever it may be, so as to grind, polish or otherwise operate upon the face thereof.
In most instances the article is not only ground by the tool on the spindle 1, but is also turned by the action of the latter, and in order that the resistance to this tiu'ning may be regulated to any desired extent, thereby determining the degree of abrasion effected by the tool, I make use of a proper friction device resisting the turning of the article. As shown, this friction device constsis of a two-part clamp L, the sections of which are recessed to receive between them a V-shaped rib 15 formed partly by an annular beveled projection 16 upon the box IE, and by a similar annular beveled projection 17 upon the hub of the shaft V. The two parts of this friction device may be brought together by means of a bolt 18 and thumb nut 19, so as to exert any suitable degree of clamping action that will resist the rotation of the disk, but any other adjustable friction device may be employed.
It will be evident that in grinding the article when set above the tool Y, as in Fig. 1, the work can be closely inspected, which is a matter of importance in many instances, and that by the combination of parts set forth, articles of different kinds may be presented to operating tools in different positions, so as to properly Work upon the same, and that whenever it is desired to remove the article from the tool it ground the box Emay be swung by the action of aspring may be done either by lifting the box E from its P secured to the end of an arm I, the lower end of which i spindle or by pulling out the spindle V from its socket, without the necessity of loosening any bolts, clamps or other parts. It will be further seen that by adjusting the spring P and weight K any desired amount of pressure may be applied to swing the box supporting the article.
While I have shown both a rocking lever and a spring as a means for securing an adjustable pressure to swing the box E, it will be evident that either may be dispensed with and the other-used alone.
Without limiting myself to the precise construction of parts shown, I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with the rotating tool, its shaft and bearings, of a bracket, means for adjustably securing said bracket to one of said bearings whereby the bracket may be swung; about and concentrically with the axis of said togl/ a spindle for the article to be operated upon, and a support for said spindle pivoted to permit said article to be moved across the face of said tool.
2. The combination with the rotating tool. the bracket A, and means for connecting the latter to swing about the axis of said tool, of a bar 1) adjustable on the bracket A and having a spindle 3, a box E adapted to swing upon said spindle and having a socket. at a right angle to the spindle, a spindle in the latter socket adapted to support the article to be operated upon, an arm F extending from said box, and means for exerting an adjustable pressure on said arm to carry the article operated upon across the edge of the tool.
The combination with the bracket A and means for connecting it to swing about the axis of a rotatable tool, of a bar D adjustable at right angles to the bracket A and provided with a spindle 3, a box E adapted to swing uponsaid spindle and having a socket at right angles to the spindle, a spindle in the latter socket for holding the article to be operated on, an arm F extending from said box, and a swinging arm bearing on the said arm F with an adjustable pressure to swing the box to carry the article operated upon across the edge of the tool.
4. The combination with the bracket A, bar D and box E, of an arm F extending from said box, and a bell crank II provided with an adjustable weight K and pivoted to a bracket G adjustable upon the bar D, substantially as set forth.
The combination with the box E adapted to receive a supporting spindle and having; a socket, an annular beveled rib at the end of the box, a spindle adapted to said socket and provided with a beveled rib, and a friction clamp adapted to engage said ribs, for the purpose set forth.
(5. The combination of the swiveled box E and its socket, a spindle adapted to said socket, means for supporting the article adapted to be operated upon by said spindle, and a friction device for applying a regulated resistance to the rotation of the spindle.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
