To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BRUNO F. ARENDT and RALPH H. MOORE, both citizens of the United States, residing at Spreckels, Monterey county, California, have invented certain Improvements in Filter-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to so construct a filter press as to provide for washing from either side the mass of material deposited between the iltering cloths and, at the same time, to arrange for the discharge of liquid from the press through closed channels communicating with a common outlet, thus rendering unnecessary the use of cocks, which are usually attached to each plate of the filter press.. This object we attain in the inanner hereinaiter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l, is a face view of one type of filter plate employed in the machine, Fig. 2, is a similar view illustrating another type ol` filter plate employed therein, Fig. 3, is a view illustrating a chambered plate or frame which alternates with the filter plates of the machine; Fig. 4, is a horizontal sectional view on an enlarged scale and taken on the lines a-a, of Figs. l, 2 and 3, and Fig. 5, is a section on the line bfb, Fig. 3, but on a larger scale than said figure.
Each of the lilter plates l and 2, with which the machine is provided, has a central transverse web 3, provided on each face with vei'tical ribs or corrugations 4, and having at the top a channel 5 and at the bottom a similar channel Gfthese channels being in communication with each other through the channels between the vertical ribs 4 of the plate, and each plate having a bordering rim or flange 7 on each side which completely surrounds the channeled portion of the plate. Each filter plate also has at each corner an outwardly projecting ear or lug, those at the upper corners of the plate being represented respectively at 9 and l0, and those at the bottom corners of the plate being represented respectively at ll and l2, each of the upper lugs being combined with a projecting handle-forming web 13, having bearings for an anti-friction roller 14, whereby the plate is mounted so as to travel back and forth upon the longitudinal supporting rails or guides of the press.
Each of the chambered plates l5 of the machine consists of a rectangular frame I6 having corner lugs or ears 91, l0, ll2L and l2-, co-acting with the corresponding lugs of the filter plates l and 2, each of the upper lugs 9*L and l0 being combined with web 13. Each of the lugs or ears l0, 11, l2 and l0, il and 1221, has extending through it an opening 17, these openings, when the various plates of the press are combined together, registering with each other and forming i specification of Letters Patent.

bridge pieces 22 for stiifening and strengthening this particular portion of each of said chainbered plates and preventing the breaking off of the lugs or ears 101L by the rough handling to which the plates are likely to be subjected in use. Each of the ears 9, 9L has two openings 24 and 25 extending through it, the openings 24 communicating through transverse passages 26 with the channeled faces of the filter pla-tes l, and the openings 25 communicating through transverse passages 27 with the channeled faces ofthe filter plates 2.
The various plates are locked together in the press in the relation shown in Fig. 4, lter cloths .fc being interposed between the chambered plates l5 and the alternating ilter plates, and packing cloths y being introduced between the projecting ears ofthe plates, whereby, when tlie plates are locked together and the material to be filtered is introduced into the chambers of the plates l5, the liquid passing through the filter cloths will escape through the channels of the iltering plates to one or other oi the discharge passages in the lugs or ears ll and l2, the solid matter being retained in the chambers of the plates I5. It is usual to wash this retained matter, and it is for the purpose ot enabling this washing operation to be readily performed, that our invention has been devised.
By the use of two passages 24 and 25 in the ears or lugs 9, 91, we are enabled to introduce the wash water, first, for a predetermined length of time through one of these passages, say 24, for instance, which escapes either through the passage 25, or the passage l7 in the lugs ll, as may be desired, these passages being controlled by suitable valves placed on the stationary head oi the filter plates. When the other passage 25 is How in a reverse direction, that is to say, from the channeled faces of the ilter plates 2, through the filter cloths, and through the material in the chambers oi the plates l5 to the channeled faces of the filter plates l, and pass away from the latvter through the passage 24, or the passage I7 in the lugs l2. Water may be turned in passages 24 and 25 simultaneously and will pass through filter cloth and material in chambers of plate l5 into passage I9, Fig. 3, and out of passage 17, a suitable valve being provided on the stationary head of the press to regulate said outflow. The use of cocks in connection with the individual plates thus becomes unnecessary.
As a consequence of this method of procedure any particles which may be lodged in the pores of the lter cloths, temporarily located on the'outgoing sides of the chambers, will be Washed from said pores when said filter cloths serve in turn on the incoming sides of the chambers, and the clogging oi the filter cloths will, therefore, be prevente ln order to prevent the filter cloths from being forced into the passages 5 and 6, at top and bottom of the filter through said passages, terrupted ribs 30 which serve to support the iilter cloths, the gaps or spaces between the successive sections of each rib providing free communication between those portions oi the channel way which are above and below said rib.

In combination with a plate for filter presses having l channeled faces, a lug integral therewith and having two wash water passages, one of said passages being in commuthe plate and the other cut oi from communication therewith, and a second lug diagonally disposed with respect to the Iirst and having a discharge passage, said passage being also in communication with the channeled faces of the plate.
In combination with a plate for lter presses having channeled faces, an upper lug integral therewith and having two wash water passages, one of said passages being in communication with the channeled faces of the plate and the other cut off from communication therewith, and two lower lugs integral with said plate each with a single i passages 4being also in channeled faces of the plate and discharge passage, one of said communication with the one cut olf therefrom.
4. In combination with a plate for filter presses having channeled faces, upper and lower-'lugs integral therewith, one of said upper lugs having two wash water passages, one of said passages being' in communication with the channeled faces of the plate and the other cut oif from communication therewith, the other of said upper lugs having' a feed passage cut oil? from the channeled faces, and each of said lower lugs having a discharge passage, one of said passages being in communlcation with the channeled faces and the other cut oi therefrom.
5. The combination, in a filter press, of plain and channeled plates alternating with eachother, each plate having two wash water passages, one of said passages being plates and the other passage beingin communication with the faces of the alternating channeled plates, and each channeled plate also having a discharge passage in communication with its face.

The combination, in a lter press, of plain and channeled plates alternating with each other, each plate having two wash water passages and two discharge passages, and one passage for conveying the material to be delivered; one of each of the water passages and one of each of the discharge passages being in communication with the faces of one series of channeled plates; and the other wash water and discharge passages being in communication with the faces ot the alternating channeled plates.
