in the disclosure of our invention, we suitably locate and secure in position upon a car, operated by a mo tive fluid, electricity or otherwise, at the forward or controller end thereof, or in an engine cab, the various parts as disclosed by the upper portion of Fig. 1; the parts in the extreme lower portion thereof being suitably secured in position at an ligible point upon the car or engine truck, within a suitable distance from the surface, and wherein l and 2 are two cylinders preferably yoked together as at ior otherwise, this being merely a detail incident to the assen'ibling of said cylinders for the uses of our invention. Within each of these cylinders is arranged a piston 4 whose diameter, however, is lcss than that of the inner cross-section of the cylinder, although suitably applied to the piston, above it are packing rings 5, of course, as indicated, .iilling the; cylinder in transverse section. A roll or wheel (5 is hung or suspended below each cylinder from :1. preferably broad flat spring 7 having one end suitably secured and adapted to be coiled around a stud or pin 89 of the cylinder supporting casting and having a horizontal portion suitably supported in position for supporting each wheel or roll 6 and adapted to return said roll or wheel to its normal or original position after having been elevated by the shoe or trip 8, two trips or shoes 8, 88 being suitably arranged alongside of the track one for each roll or wheel, which will be further described later on.
An indicator 9 suitably equipped with a tape or ribbon 10 having indicia thereon, such as railroad stations, crossings, water-tanks, block-signals, or any other information it may be desired to impart to the .notorrnan or engineer, is suitably supported in position convenientlyto the latter. The tapoor ribbon 10 is coiled ,or wound in opposite directions upon two rolls 11 suit-' ably journaled in the indicator casing or housing. One of said rolls is hollow and has arranged therein a spring suitably adapted to deliver its tension upon said roll as thetape or ribbon is unwound therefrom in order to provide ior the reverse action of the roll when the ribhon has been unwound from thesame, and is to be reavennd thereon. The air-pressure at this juncture passes into the cylinder 1 via the air supply pipe 22 leading to the air supply reservoir (not shown) for delivery to the piston 4 and thence into pipe 21. A whistle 23, snitably applied to the pipe 21 serves as an audible signal when the aforesaid action of parts takes place, as will be reddily appreciated. A piston-equipped cylinder 29 is also applied to the pipe 24, whose piston A is subjected to the tension of a spring 30, the purpose of which will be apparent later. Also a pipe 31 leading to the high pressure air reservoir (not shown) is equipped with a. valve 32, having its handle 33 connected by a rod or link 34 with the spring-cushioned piston A arranged in the cylinder 29 for the retention initially or normally closed. Said pipe Bl has a valveequipped arm or branch 34 leading to the brake-cylinder for'applying the brakes simultaneously with the applying oi the danger signal. A still further pipe 35 having connection with the pipe 31 and cylinder 1 and provided with a nimnmlly-aetuated valve 36 provides for delivering air-pressure by suitably operating said valve, to the upper end of the cylinder, said pipe also having a brunch pipe connection 3'7 with the cylinder 2 [or a like purpose in connection with the latter.

It is further noted that, in event of an engine passing from the main track to the siding and deflecting or spreading the points of the switch-rails, which would its tension or pressure to elevate the piston 47 and set the shoe or trip 8 for actuating the signal upon an approaching engine, as aforesaid.
The shoe or trip 88 is stationary or not actuated as the shoe or trip 8, only being principally used for actuating a station or like indicator signal, although also adapted for sending in an audible OI WlIlStlG signal as above made apparent.
A portable trip or shoe 71, suitably adapted for being placed at any required point along the railroadtraek, as for flagging a train, is provided with spring presscd or adjustable jaw or cleat-like-equipped bars 72, 73 effective for clamping, or application to a rail 0 the railroad-track, as clearly disclosed by Fig. 10.

G A device of the character described, comprising a piston, air-pressure supplying means for the cylinder 01 said piston, a danger signal embracing a piston carrying an annuncintor, air-pressure meuns delivering from said cylinder into the cylinder of the latter, means for producing an audible signal connecting with said air-pressure delivering means, a roll or wheel equipped to lift the first-referred to piston and having arranged in connection there with a coiled spring by the recoil-action of which said wheel or roll is automatically returned to its initial positlon.

A device of the character described, comprising a pis ton with its cylinder provided with air-pressure supply means, an audible signal, means'for delivering air-pressure from said cylinder to said audible signal, valve-equipped means receiving air-pressure, for delivery into the upper end of said cylinder and additional valve-equipped means for automatically controlling the first-noted valve-equipped means, means for operating said piston and means for notuaiing said piston operating means.

A device of the character described, comprising a piston with its cylinder provided with air-pressure supplying menus, a signal having airpressure supply connection with said cylinder, means for operating said piston, a pivoted shoe or trip having connection with a switch, and means for elevating suid shoe or trip when the switch is in open position.

A device of the character described, comprising means operated by air or like pressure, means for operating a signal from said airpressure operated means, a pivoted shoe or trip for actuating said air-pressure operated means and means effecting connection between said shoe or trip and a switch embracing a sliding, crossdiead, a pivoted hitch or dog cnguged.\vil:l1 said cross-head and a cam eficctive to trip or disengage suid latch or dog from said cross-head in o ening the switch. A device of the character-described, comprising 11 signaling contrivance carried upon a. car or engine and switch-actuated mechanism, including a pivoted shoe or trip arranged alongside of the track, a piston eii'iective for engagement with said shoe, a cylinder or tube containing a. number of spheres or balls assembled in said tube or cylinder and supporting said piston in projected position, and means also arranged in said tube or cylinder for the delivery of the opening action of said switch-actuated mechanism upon said balls 01 spheres. 14.
