This invention relates to button-making machines and has for an object to provide a device of the class embodying new and improved features of convenience, reliability and efficiency.
A further object of the invention is to provide a drilling mechanism ior operation in conjunction with any approved form of button carrier, which said drilling mechanism embodies improved structures and advantages.
A further object of the invention is to provide a drilling mechanism for button-making machines embodying new and improved means whereby the drill may be adjusted to various distances from the center of the button being operated upon.
A further object of the invention is to provide a drill for button making machines rotatably mounted within an eccentric sleeve, which said sleeve is in operation mounted within another eccentric sleeve, whereby the said drill may be adjusted with a great degree of nicety. 7
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain other novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the drilling mechanism forming the present invention. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 4% of Fig. 2.

In its preferred embodiment the structure forming the subject matter of this application comprises a frame 10 upon which is journaled a button carrier or index head 11' provided with a plurality of buttoncarrying chucks 12 and operated in any usual and approved manner, whereby the chucks are brought into operative position relative to the drilling mechanism, which is the essence of this invention.
.lournaled upon the frame 10 is a shaft 13 provided with a cam 14 having a slot 15 within which is engaged a lug 1.6 upon the under surface of the slide block 17 carrying the drilling mechanism, and by which the said slide block is moved longitudinally of the frame.
Upon the slide block 17 are erected the uprights 1S and 19, providedrespectively at their upper ends with bearings 20 and 21 positioned and arranged to receive and accommodate the sleeve 22 eccentrically bored. Within the eccentric bore of the sleeve 22 is rotatably mounted a sleeve 23 also eccentric-ally bored and within the eccentric bore of which is journaled the drill arbor 24. The sleeves 22 and 23 are retained in adjusted position relative to each other by means of a disk 25 rigidly secured to one end of the sleeve 22 and a disk 26 rigidly secured to the end of the sleeve 23 and in engagement with the disk 25. The disk 26 is provided with a segmental slot 27 through which extends a screw 28 engaged within the disk 25 and by which the said disks 25 and 26 are clamped rigidly together. About the sleeve 22 is a grooved pulley 29 in the groove of which operates a slip belt 30, the said disk being held from rotary movement by means of a detent 31 pivoted to the slide block 17, as at 32, and having a finger 33 rigidly connected therewith and in position for engagement by a lug 34 upstanding from the frame 10 as the slide block 17 is reciprocated thereupon.
The drill arbor 24 is provided at one end with a chuck oi any approved form, shown conventionally at 35, for engaging and holding a drill, as 36, and at its opposite end is provided with a pulley 37 having a groove 38 or other means for engaging a belt or band, and by which the drill arbor and its associated drill are operatively rotated.
As the button carrier 11, which forms no part of the present invention but is covered by a co-pending application, is rotated bringing the disks 1.2 successively into operative relation with the drill mechanism, the said drill is rotated by means of the pulley 28 and is moved longitudinally upon the frame 10 by means of the cam 14 and the lug 16 within the slot 15. When the drilling mechanism moved by the cam 14 is at the extreme of its outward movement, the finger 33 engages the lug 34 whereby the detent 33 is disengaged from the pulley 39 and the said pulley is rotatably moved by the slip band 30. The drill arbor 24 being mounted eccentrically to the sleeve 22, the rotary movement of the said pulley 29 and its associated sleeve 22 moves the drill point through the arc of a circle of such diameter as to properly position the eyes of the button upon which it is operated.
As the drilling mechanism herein shown is designed for operation upon and in connection with button blanks of various sizes, it is iound necessary to move the said drill radially relative to the center of the button blank operated upon for which purpose the sleeves 22 and 23 are eccentriciilly bored and one mounted within the eccentric bore of the other. By loosening the screw 28 the sleeves 22 and 23 may be rotated relative to each other and the radial position of the drill produced by the eccentric bore oi the sleeve 22 thereby changed as the positions of the eccentrics are varied.
As shown in Fig. 4, the eccentric sleeves 22 and 23 are so positioned that the thicker sides of the said sleeves are in juxtaposition and whereby the drill point is at its farthest remove from the center of the button to be operated upon. By rotatably moving the sleeve 23 Within the sleeve 22, the narrow side of the eccentric 23 may be moved into juxtaposition With the thicker side of the sleeve 23 whereby the drill is positioned exactly in the center and any position between such two points may be secured by the proper adjustment of the sleeves.
I claim:
1. In a button making machine, a drill carriage, bearings formed upon said carriage, a sleeve jonrnaled in the said bearings and provided with an eccentric bore, a sleeve journaled within the eccentric bore and provided with an eccentric bore, means to adjustably lock the sleeves rigidly together inany one of several angular positions, a drill spindle journaled within the eccentric bore of the inner sleeve, means whereby the drill spindle may be moved rotatahly, means whereby the inter-engaged eccentric sleeves may he moved rotatahly, a detent arranged to engage the interlocked sleeves and retain them against rotary movement in any one of several angular positions.
2. In a button making machine, a sleeve provided with an eccentric bore, a flange at one end of and rigid with the said sleeve, a sleeve journaled within the eccentric bore and provided with an eccentric bore, a flange at the end of and rigid with the sleeve and in juxtaposition to the flange of the outer sleeve, means locking the flanges rigidly together, and a drill spindle jonrnaled within the eccentric bore of the inner sleeve.
3. In a button making machine, a sleeve provided with an eccentric bore, a flange about one end of and rigid with the sleeve, a sleeve journaled within the eccentric bore and provided with an eccentric bore, a flange upon the end of and rigid with the second sleeve and in juxtaposition to the first sleeve and provided with a segmental slot, clamping means inserted through the segmental slot of one flange and engaging the other flange, and a drill spindle journaled within the eccentric bore of the inner sleeve.
