SAFETY WHEEL FOR ROLLER SKATES. APPLICATION FILED Mum, 1907.

ROSSETER I. TOWLE, OF NEWPORT, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR TO ALBERT E. TORELLE, OF SPOKANE, WASHINGTON.
SAFETY-WHEEL FOR ROLLER-SKATES.
Patented Aug. 20, 1907.
Application filed May 31, 1907. Serial No. 376,522.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that RossETnR I. Townn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newport, in the county of Stevens and State of Washington, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Wheels for Roller-Skates, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved means of attaching a safety-wheel on the rear end of a roller skate to enable the skater to regain his equilibrium very easily and quickly.
Means of attaching a wheel for the above named purposes have heretofore been known and used, other than the means applied by myself and as described herein and shown upon the drawings, but I claim new features which will be hereinafter described.
Figure l is a side view of a roller skate provided with my improved plan of attachment of a safety-wheel, Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the heel band, constituting a portion of the improved apparatus.
On the rear or heel end of the foot plate 10 of the roller skate, a band 11 is secured, with projections or stays 12 adapted to engage the under surface of the foot plate 10 and add to the stability of the fixture. To the band 11 is also secured or made integral therewith a boxing 13, the opening 14 of which is adapted to receive the forked standard 15, adjusted, sustained and made firm therein by the thumb screw 16; the safety-wheel 17, as a matter of course, is secured on a shaft 18 between the forks of the standard 15.
The object of the safety wheel attachment being primarily intended for the use of one who is learning to skate and who may later desire to discontinue the use of the same without putting it beyond his power to again apply the same, makes it desirable that the wheel and standard should be removable and subject to re-attachment at will and it is these qualities of my invention that I place particular stress upon.
The band 11 may safely be left at its position upon the skate, at all times, withouthindrance to the general use of the skate, and the standard bearing the safetywheel removed by simply loosening the thumb screw and withdrawing the standard and may be easily replaced by re-inserting the standard and tightening the thumb screw.
A further advantage of the invention is the fact that the standard 15 may be adjusted in the opening 14 by the thumb screw 16 by raising or lowering the standard to elevate the safety-wheel 17 to such a distance from the floor as may best suit the wishes or requirements of the skater.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination, with a roller-skate, of a band secured to the rear or heel end thereof, such band having projections or stays adapted to engage the under surface of the foot-plate of the skate, and a boxing adapted to receive in its opening a standard, bearing a wheel on a shaft, such standard adjusted in the said boxing by means of a thumb screw adapted thereto through the wall of said boxing, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROSSETER I. TOWLE.
