Be it known that I, JosIAH P. GEEAN, of Brooklyn,in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stop Attachments for ROllerSkates, of which the following is afull, clear, and exactdescription.

Reference is to be had to" the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

The flexible block is secured in the recess of the curved plate by a clamping-plate fastened to the said curved plate and resting against the flanges ofthe said plate and the iiexible block, as will be hereinafter fully described and then claimed.

Al represents the stock; B, the heel-stay; C, the front stay; D E, the rear rollers and their supports; and F G,.the forward rollers and their supports, all of which parts can be constructed in any desired manner or style.v

To the lower side of the rear end of the stock A or to the roller-supports attached to the said end is secured by screws, bolts, or rivets, or other suitable means the upper end of a plate, H, made of steel or other suitable material. The plate H is curved downward in the rear of the rollers D, and is made of such a length that its lower end will be near the floor when the rollers D F are resting upon the said iioor. The side edges, I, of the plate H project forward as flanges to strengthen the said plate, and thus allow it to be made lighter than wouldotherwise be practicable, and especially to form a recess, J, to receive a block, 5o K, of rubber or other suitable flexible material. The block K is secured in place by a plate, L, fastened tothe plate H by screws,

bolts, or rivets, and resting against the forward side of the said block Kand the edges of the flanges I. The anges I can be so formed that the recess J will `be tapered both upward and downward to further secure the block K in place. If desired, the recess J can be made in dovetailed form, so that the block K can be secured in place without the use of the plate L; but I prefer the construction first described,as fastening the said block more secu rely.v With this construetion,when the skater wishes to stop he raises the forward part of the skate a little from the door, which brings the flexible block in contact with the floor, and by the friction therewith the advance of the skater is speedily checked. Antheradvantage of this attachment is that it' the forward part of" the skaters foot should be slightly raised, ex-

posing himV to the danger of falling backward,

the said movement will bring the iiexible block into contact with the floor, and the friction thus produced will check the sudden forwardv movement of the skate, and thus enable the skater to maintain or recover his equilibrium.

I am aware of the existence of stops applied to the heel ends of skates, the same, in one instance, consisting of a forked or bifurcated pendant with a piece of wood or rubber secured between its arms or prongs, while, in

another instance, is employed a stop which r comprises a single rearwardly-curved plate or pendant, to the lower end of which latter is connected a pad or cushion.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent* In a stop attachment for roller-skates, the curved pendent plate having at its under side' edges inwardly-projecting flanges, to the lower edges of which flanges, near their lower ends.
