APPLIOATION FILED AUG. 10. 1906.
THE NORRIS PE7ERS 5a., wasnuvarnn a c MARGARET SUMMERS, OF COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO.
MODEL-BOARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 20, 1907.
Application filed August 10, 1906. Serial No. 330,057.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARGARET SUMMERs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Colorado Springs, in the county of El Paso and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Model- Boards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved construction of device for supporting models for a drawing class and the object of the invention is to provide a cheap, simple and efficient form of device which can be supported upon two ordinary school desk's upon opposite sides of the aisle and .a still further object is to provide an easel in connection with the support by means of which any object can be held in an upright position either as a separate model or as a back-ground for a model arranged upon the board or support.
With these objects in view and also with certain others which will hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the practical application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device, a portion of the slats being broken away to disclose the construction of the adjustable frame. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the easel. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view showing one end of one portion of the frame. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of theadjustable supporting leg. Fig. 7 is a view of the bolt and winged nut. Fig. 8 is a detail sectional view on the line 8-8 of Fig. 2.
In carrying out my invention I employ an essentially rectangular shaped supporting frame A, which frame is adapted to be adjusted according to the width of the aisle and by this it is meant that the said frame can be expanded or contracted as desired, and in order to accomplish this adjustment I construct the frame in two sections A and A each essentially rectangular in shape, the side members being slotted longitudinally as shown at B and adapted to slide upon each other, bolts 0 passing through the slotted sides and provided with winged nuts D, by means of which the side members can be tightly clamped together whenever the desired adjustment has been obtained. The bolts 0 also serve to connect cross-bars l], to the side members, said crossbars serving as supports for the permanent slats F, which constitute the end pieces of the model board, the center of the model board consisting of a plurality of detachable slats G connected to the'end slats F and to each other by dowel pins. It will thus be understood that the frame A is adjusted to the desired points and the required number of detachable slats inserted thereby arranging a suitable support or platform upon the frame.
I Screw eyes H are attached to the opposite ends of the frame and are adapted to engage hooks I, which are connected to the desks and the opposite ends of the frame are supported upon legs K, which are slotted longitudinally as shown at K and are connected to the frame sections by means of a bolt L, and winged nut M, the legs being slotted longitudinally for the purpose of rendering them adjustable so as to accommodate desks of varying degrees of inclination and each side bar is provided with guide lugs N, which fit in the slot K and prevent the leg turning.
0 indicates an easel having the support P, pivotally connected thereto and this easel O is preferably constructed with a plurality of perforations O, which are arranged in vertical and horizontal rows, so that a pin can be readily inserted for the purpose of supporting any object desired.
It will thus be seen that I provide a cheap and simple construction of model'board or support which can be quickly and easily arranged upon two ordinary school desks and furthermore it will be noted that the easel is so constructed and arranged that it can be used in connection with the model board or support.
When the device is not in use it can be folded into a very small space and put away.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
1. A device of the kind described, comprising a frame, slats permanently connected to said frame, detachable slats adapted to be connected to the permanent slats and rest upon the frame, means for connecting the one end of the frame to a school-desk and adjustable legs carried by the other end for supporting the frame in a horizontal position.
2. A device of the kind described comprising a pair of rectangular frames provided with slotted sides one arranged within the other, bolts passing' through said slots, in the sides of the frame, slats fixed in said frame detachably slats connected to the fixed slats and adjustable legs carried by the opposite ends of said frame, for the purpose described.
3. A device of the kind described comprising a rectangular shaped frame consisting of two sections adjustable upon each other, the fixed slats connected to the said sections, the detachable slats connected to the fixed slats and also to each other, means for connecting the frame to a school desk and the adjustable legs for supporting the opposite end of the frame as set forth.
4. A device of the kind described comprising a rectangular shaped frame consisting of two essentially rectangular shaped sections provided with means for locking them in any desired position, the fixed slats connected to the adjustable sections, the detachable slats connected to each other and arranged between the fixed slats, means for connecting one end of the frame of a school desk, the adjustable legs connected to the other end of the frame, all of said parts being arranged and adapted to operate, substantially as described.
