Description

f tant ten-t it.
A. B. CANDEE, OF HAMDEN, AND L. S. TAYLOR, OF UNIONVILLE, CONNECTICUT.
Leners Patent No. 86,361, daad Fama/ry 2, 1869.
IMPROVE!) DIE FOR FORG-ING WRENCH-HEADS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part cf the same.
To all whom" it lmoz/y concern:
-Be it known that we, A. B. CANDEE, of Hamden, in the county of New Haven, and L. S. TAYLR, of Unionville, in the county of Hartford, and Stateof Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Dies for Forging Wrench-Heads; and we do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specication, and represent, in
Figure l, a perspective View of one part of the die;
Figure 2, a perspective view of the other'part, with the follower inserted; and in Figures 3 and 4, perspective views illustrating the operation.
This invention relates to an improvement in dies for forging the head and bar of monkey-wrenches.
Various devices have been employed for this purpose, but all require several operations, or several sets of dies, to produce the head complete.
The object of our invention is to complete the head in a single set of dies, and by a single operation; and to this end,
The invention consists in constructing a divided die, so as to receive the blank or straight bar, and having in one end a follower, which passes into the die when closed, so as to upset the bar placed therein, and form the head complete at a single operation.
In order to the clear understanding of our invention, we will fully describe the same, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings. n t3 A is one part, and B, the other part of the die, the one closing over the other, so that the recesses in the two will correspond exactly to each other.
The recess or channel Gis (when the two are closed together) of the size of the bar of the wrench, and the' space D (when the two dies are closed) is of the length and thickness of the head, and are constructed so`as to receive the follower E, fitting closely into the space D, its inner cud of the form required for the outer side of the head of the wrench, here shown as being 4and there firmly held, extending up into the space D,
so as to present to the' said space a sufficient amount of metal to form the head, the bar being considerably i heated before being placed into the die, then the follower is forced down, so as to upset the metal in the space D and form the head, as'seen in iig. 4.
By this arrangement the most perfect head is produced, and at a single operation, greatly reducing the cost of manufacture of wrenches.
We do not wish to be understood as broadly claiming upsetting or forging the head of the wrench upon the bar.
Having thus fully described our invention,
What we claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The two parts, A. and B, of a die, constructed so as to receive and hold the bar F, and combined with the follower E, the whole constructed and arranged in the manner described, so as to upset and foriuthe head at a single operation, substantially as set forth.
