SAFETY-CALK FOR HORSESHOES.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JOHN G. BELLOFF and ANTON ROTH, citizens of the United States, residing at New Brunswick, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Oalks for Horseshoes; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for horse shoes and comprises essentially a toe calk, which may be easily and quickly attached to the shoe, and comprises various details of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.

We illustrate our invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a bottom plan view showing my improved attachment as fastened to a horse shoe. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4*4 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 5 is a detailed perspective view of the fastening clip.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a horse shoe and B designates a toe piece having a calk C thereon. Said calk may be either integral with the toe piece or removably held thereon, whereby the calk may be replaced if desired when the same becomes worn. Said toe piece is provided with the curved wings E designed to fit over the upper edge of the shoe and the hoof to which the shoe is fastened. Said toe piece is provided with a central threaded aperture F, which extends through the calk and also isprovided with two parallel unthreaded apertures G, one upon either side of the central threaded aperture.

K designates a clamping clip which is inverted L- shaped and recessed, as at K, upon its laterally projecting portion. Two guide pins L are fixed to said clip and are parallel with each other and adapted to register with the two unthreaded apertures through said toe piece, whereby said clip may be guided in its longitudinal movements to and from the toe piece. N designates a screw swiveled in an aperture in said clip and fitted in the threaded aperture of the toe piece and the outer end of the screw is squared to receive an adjusting wrench whereby the screw may be turned in one direction or tl e other.

In operation, the toe piece is fitted over the end of the horse shoe and the clip adjusted in place so that the forwardly projecting upper end of said clip will engage over the inner edge of the horse shoe. The pins of the clip are brought into registration with and fitted in the unthreaded holes of the toe piece and the screw tightened causing the clip to tightly clamp against the inner edge of the horse shoe while the toe piece is drawn against the outer end thereof, thereby securely clamping the toe piece with the calk to the shoe. A reverse movement of the screw will readily allow the toe piece to be removed from the shoe, which will be understood I What we claim to be new is 1. An attachment for horse shoes, comprising a toe piece having a flange adapted to fit over the toe of a horse shoe, a clip having a laterally projecting portion designed to engage over the inner edge of the toe of the shoe, a screw swiveled in said clip and engaging a threaded aperture in said toe piece, pins fixed to said clip and guided in apertures in said toe piece, as set forth.

2. An attachment for horse shoes comprising a toe piece having curved wings adapted to fit over the end of a horse shoe and provided with parallel guide apertures and a central threaded aperture, a calk seated in a groove in the under side of said toe piece and having apertures in registration with the apertures in the latter, a clip having a laterally projecting portion adapted to fit over the inner upper edge of the toe of a horse shoe, pins fixed to said clip and engaging said guide apertures, and a screw swiveled to said clip and engaging the threaded apertures of said toe piece, as set forth.
