GROVER N. MARVIN, OF OBERLIN, KANSAS.
STOVE PIPE -TI-IIMB LE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 13, 1907.
Application filed November 9, 1906 Serial No. 342,723.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Guovnn N. MARVIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oberlin, in the county of Decatur and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe-Thiinbles, of which the following is a specification.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved stove pipe thimble. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view thereof.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a stove pipe provided with an elbow 2 and adapted for insertion at one end within my improved thimble 3.
The thimble-3 is provided on its inner side with a guide retaining plate 4 extending lengthwise thereof and provided at one margin of the pipe with a recess 5, and with an elongated slot 6 in its other end in registry with said recess. The plate 4 is formed at opposite ends with pairs of tongues 7 formed of the material on each side of the slot and recess, and said tongues are bent outwardly and rearwardly so as to clip the edges of the thimble and securely hold the plate 4 in place.
8 designates a lock strip, which is mounted to slide longitudinally between the guide plate 4 and the ad jacent wall of the thimble and to slip through the recess 5, and said lock strip is provided at one end with a laterally extending finger or abutment 9 adapted to engage with the inner end of the stove pipe, so as to prevent said pipe from being inserted too far into the thimble, where it might shut off the draft.
The opposite end of the lock strip 8 is offset or bent laterally, preferably in an upward direction as indicated at 10, and is provided with an aperture in which a screw 11 is mounted. This screw is provided with an eye 11 to which one end of the wire 12 or the like is secured, and the other end of said wire is intended to be attached to the pipe 1, or its elbow 2 so as to securely hold the pipe from moving outwardly.
In the practical'operation of my improved stove pipe thimble and its related parts, the inner end of the stove pipe 1 is inserted into the thimble until its edge abuts against the finger 9 of the lock strip 8. The screw 11 is then screwed up with the wire 12 attached thereto, and the parts are thus securely held together as against either inward or outward displacement.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided a very simple, cheap and eilicient construction of stove pipe thimble, which provides means for readily attaching a stove pipe thereto, and holding it in attached position, and from which the stove pipe may be readily removed whenever desired.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A stove pipe thimble, provided with a guide plate formed at one end with a recess and at the other end with an elongated slot in alinement with said recess, a lock strip held between said plate and the adjacent wall of the thiinble and mounted to slide longitudinally through the recess, said lock strip being provided at one end with an inwardly extending finger movable in the slot of the plate and having its other end extending laterally in an opposite direction, and a screw working in the last named end of the lock strip and designed to hold one end of a support ing wire or the like.
As an improved article of manufacture, the herein described stove pipe thiinble provided with a guide plate having a recess at one end and provided with a longitudinal slot in alinernent with said recess, said strip being provided with tongues bent around the edges of the thinnble to hold the plate in place, a lock strip mounted to slide between said plate and the adjacent wall of the thiinblc and provided-with oppositely extending ends, one end ex tending inwardly into the thimble and movable along the slot and adapted to abut against the inner end of the stovepipe inserted in said thinible, and the other end of the lock strip being provided with an adjusting screw, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
