Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY E. INSLEY, OF NEV YORK, N. Y. l
IMPROVEMENT IN DAGUERREOTYPE PICTURES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 8,633, dated January 6, 1852.
To @ZZ 1071/0772/ it' may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY E. INsLEY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and ImprovedA Method for Producing what I call Illuminated Daguerreotypes; and I hereby declare the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the drawing.
The nature of my invention consists in producing an image of greater boldness and relief, at the same time casting a halo of Various tints around the image, gradually blending in the dark or black outer edge.
To enable skillful daguerreotypists to use my invention, I will proceed to describe the operation.
The daguerreotype-plate is prepared and the impression taken in the usual Way, except that I use a light or white background previous to putting the impression-plate upon the mercury bath, Fig. l. I place in the frame 2 ot' the mercury bath a mat ct or other contractor, with an opening b about one-third or onehalf the size of the plate used. I then place upon the contractor a small frame c, which Will raise the plate d from the contractor about three-sixteenths of an inch. This frame may be either square or beveled off toward the opening in such a manner as to permit the mercury to pass freely upon the center of the plate, gradually diminishing towardthe outer edges, thus producing the Various tints and giving strength and relief to the image.
The openiug'rnay be either oval, square, or any other form, according to fancy.
W'hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The contracted opening to the mercury bath and the separating or raising the plate from the contractor during the operation of mercurializing, thus graduating the mercury upon the plate, producing the various tints,
and gradually blending the outer edges of the image.
H. E. INSLEY.
