Description

J. H. WHITE 85 W. S. BENSON.
GENTPJPUGALy SCREW PUMP.
Paten-ted Jan. '26, 1869.
rn: Norms Pzfcns co, vnuwurno., wAsmNL-.Tom n. c.
diam/Interi @anni i JOH H. WHITE, OF LIMA, PERU; AND WILLIAM S.-HE NSON, OF NEWARK, N EV JERSEY.
Letters Patent No. 86,264, dated January 26, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN CENTRIFUG-AL-SCREW PUMPS.
' Q-Wm The Schedule referred to in these Lei-.ters Patent and 'making part of the same- To all whom 'it may concern:
-Be it known that we, J OHN HQWHITE, of Lima, iu Peru, South America, and WILLIAM S. BENSON, ot Newark, in the county of Essex, and State of N ew J ersey, have inventedA a new and improved Centrifugal and I It consists in revolving a conical screw in a properlyconstrncted shell, and in the arrangement of the supply-valves in combination therewith, whereby the water is raised by the combined force of the revolving screw and centrifugal motion,as will be hereinafter' more fully described. Y
Figure 1 is a central sectional elevation of the pump,
showing the parts of which it is composed, and the' method of its operation.
Figure 2 is a detailed View of the yoke by which the sha ofthe pnmpis supported at its upper end.
Figure 3 is a detail, showing the conical screw, the view being from the bottom.
Figure 4 is a sectional detailed view of the upper part of the shell, showing the delivery-tube.
Figure 5 is a horizontal section through the line :t x of fig. 1, showing the arrangement ofthe supply-valves.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the shell or casing of the pump, which is stationary.
B B is the revolving-screw cone. This is a double cone, the screw-thread being cut only upon the lower portion, as seen inthe drawing.
D is the shaft by which the double cone is revolved.
C is the valve-section.
The shell is made in sections, the lower one, G, boing the valve or supply-section by which the pump is fastened down.
This is a submerged pump, the design beingr to work it underwater, as at the bottom of a cistern, well, or reservoir.
Theshaft D, to which the double cone B is attached,
struction forpumpsjfor raising water and other liquids is stepped into a central portion of the shell, as seen at e.
It will be seen that the supply-valves f are arranged so. as to give the water a circular motion, and that the cone is revolved in au opposite direction, so that the threads of the screw dip the water Afrom the opposing current, 'and elevate it in the channels between the threads and the shell, as indicated by the arrows, thc water-passages around the cone being of equal area.
.The current olwater in being thus elevated, is given a rapid whirling motion by the centrifugal force imparted; but this Amotion is couni'eractcd by' the ribs g, on the inside vof the shell, so that the water is discharged in a smooth and solid stream from the pipe H.
The upper part of the shaft I) is supported by the yoke J, from the bottoni of which the shaft passes down into the shell, through a stuffing-box, as seen at I.
At the top of the yoke, the shaft is suspended in a self-oiling cup, K, by the collar L, which is fastened to `the shaft by keys, as seen at m, iig. 1, and by the nutsl n, above.
By unscrewing the bolts at o, the sections of the double-cone shell are separated, and the conecan be readily removed.
l? is' the pulley by which the shaft and cone are revolved.
Bevel-wheels and crank may be used instead of the pulley, if desired:
The quantity of water raised by the pump will, of
y course, depend upon the velocity with which it is driven.
l XVe claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The double cone B B', in combination with the shell. A, arrangedand operating substantiallyr as described, for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination with the screw-section B', the arrangement of the supply-valves in the valve-section C, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
The above specification ot' our invention signed by us, this 10th day ofJune, 1868.
JOHN H. WHITE. WM. S. HENSON. Witnesses:
