To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, JosEPH E. LYNAM, a citizen of the receiving the strips of material separately for each box,
and automatically arranging thenr in proper. position and bending them into shape and securing-the ends of the strips together to form them into a box, after which they are discharged.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement of parts of such a machine as will be hereinafter more particularly set forth.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention. 5
Figure 1 is-a broken side-elevation of a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a broken top-plan vicw. Fig..3 is a broken side-elevation, partly in section with some of the parts omitted. Fig, 4 is a sectional side-elevation. Fig. 5 is a plan-view of the top of one of the formers enlarged; Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional-view of a portion of the former-carrying wheel showing one of the formers. Fig. 7 is a front-view of the resser-head and folders. Figs. "8 and9 are side and end-elevations respectively, of the wheel rotating mechanism.
In constructing a machine in accordance with my invention a suitable wheel 1 is mounted on a frame 2 and driven from any suitable source of power through a fly-wheel 3.and gearing 4. The wheel is preferably formed of two sides or disks 5 and 6 mounted on an axle 7. The periphery of the wheel is provided with a series of formers 8, preferably six in number, which are adapted to be consecutively brought under a presserl1ead 9.
The formers 8 are preferably constructed by securing i sides or wings 10 to projections 11 on the peripheryof the wheel, and arranging a movable bottom 12 between them. The wings are as long asthebottom of the 'box is wide, and the outer edges are such a distance apart that wings or folders 13 on the resser-head- 9 will bend the material for the bottom of the box down over the wings when the presser-head descends. The bottom 14 of the presser-head is preferably in the form of a plate and is spring-pressed, as by providing it with a stem 15 which projects through the head and locating a sprihg 16 between the bottom and the head, as shown in Fig. 7. A shoulder, as a pin 17 through the-stem above the head, holds the bottom 14 substantially even with the lower edges of 'the folders 13 so as to engage with the material and hold it against movement simultaneously the ends of the material of that-side.

The folders 13 are preferably, loosely secured to the head 9 so as to permit ofa slight outward movement of their loweredges when they first engage with the material and thereby avoid anexcessive strain by bending the .material tooabruptly. Springs 18 are arranged beposition and thereby cause the ends of the bottom to be properly bent over the sides of the wings 10. The spring 18 is strong enough tohold the bottom upon the former until after the folders 13 become disengaged therefrom when the resser-head 9 is raised to permit of the further operation of the machine in completing the I formation of the box.
A flat flexible finger-20 projects beyond each side of the bottom 14 and has its end bent downward slightly so as to engage with the edges of the material and properly position it upon the folder before it is engaged by said bottom and the folders 131 The bottom 12 of the former is mounted upon a stem 21 which is adapted to be reciprocated through two projections'22 which extend from one of the sides of the wheel toward the other. A finger or projection 23 extends through a slot 24 in one side of the wheel'b} means of which the bottom 12 may be moved down ward and spring 25 returns the bottom'to its normal position after it has been moved downward bythe finger 23 to eject a completed box.
Pivotally mounted in the sides of the wheel at each side of the former is a shaft 26 on each end of which is rigidly secured a wing or folder 27 which is adapted to t bottom in position tobe secured by stitchers inthe i ordinary manner. The wings atone end of the former are preferably wider than at the other so as to engage withthe material at that side of the box and fold it in before the wings at the other end of the former bend in These shafts and wings are preferably actuated by means of a block or head 29 which is loosely mounted upon the stem21 and provided with a projection or finger 30 which projects through a slot 31 in the side ofthe wheel.
Two links 32 are connected with the head 29 and with the arms 33 whichare connected respectively with the shafts 26 and cause the wings 27 to be moved towardand from the former as thehead29 is reciprocated.

'lhe cross-bar is held in engagement with the periphery of the disk at all times by means, of a spring 50 which is connected with one of the membersof the push-rod and with the lever 44. The disk is locked against movement by means of a pin 51 on a V-shaped lever 52 which is adapted to be automaticin the pathof the cross-bar 49 as the latter is moved alternately up and down by the cam, while the cross-.

The leverisactuated by means of a cam 64 on the-shaft 37 which engages with a pin 65 on the lever. v In operating my machine the material is fed to the formers as the wheel is rotated and the bottom is bent into shape by the descent of the presser head after which the ends are bent in by the pivotal folders and subsequently secured by the stitching mechanism. As the wheel is moved-forward step by step and justbe: fore eachbasket reaches the point of ejectment the wings that have held it in position are partially opened by the crescent-shaped cam and the bottom of the former is then moved downward and the completed box ejected from the wheel. Immediately thereafter the bottom of the former is automatically returned to its normal position and the wings opened for the reception of the material of a new box. By arranging the formers upon diametrically opposite sides of the wheel the reciprocatory frame will normally stand in line with two of them at the same time so that one movement of the frame will complete the folding of the material upon one former and eject the completed box from the other.

two-part push-rod connected therewith at one end; a cross bar at the other end of said rod in position for engaging the locking-lever and one of the recesses of the disk and thereby actuating the locking-lever and rotating the disk and wheel whenever said rod is actuated, and a cam for plurality of formers, folders for each former, a lever provided with a perforated head at one end, folders loosely secured at the sides of the head in position to pass down upon the sides of each former, springs for engaging with said folders, bolts through the springs and through the folders into the head, a stem throughv the perforation of the head, a plate at the lower end of said stem, a spring between theplate and the head, and means for actuating said wheel and lever.
