Description
WALTER IQKI'IILL, OF CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA.
ROLL-SCRAPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 30, 1907.
App'umion met october 17, 190e. serial No. 339.401.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LQWALTER I. HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clarksburg, in the county of Harrison and State of West Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Roll-Scrapers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a scraper attachment for tin plate machines, the object of the invention being to provide a scraper which may be readily applied in position and which will effectively act upon the rolls of the machine to remove therefrom the surplus metal, the device being adjustable to regulate its pressure upon the rolls.
In the accompanying drawing-Figure ll is a cross section through a tin plate machine embodying my invention, showing one of the end standards of the frame and a pair of the rolls. vFig. 2 is a top plan view of the device. Fig. 3 is a similar View of the supporting plate thereof.' Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the pressure springs. Fig. 5 is a section through the supporting plate on line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates one of the endstandards of a tin plate machine, and 2 rolls joumaled in the standards and operating in practice upon the plate.
A scraper of the type constituting the present inven tion is employed to 'remove the surplus metal from.
each roll. Each scraper is arranged upon the outer side of the roll and extends parallel therewith and comprises a supporting plate or member 3 provided at its ends with attaching arms 4 perforated for the passage of suitable fastenings to secure'the same to the end standards. A scraper blade 5 rests upon the supporting platel and has its inner longitudinal edge arranged to bear upon the surface of the roll to remove the surplus metal therefrom. Said scraper plate is of somewhat less length than the supporting plate and is provided at suitable intervals with transverse slots 6.V
Securing bolts 7 pass upward through openings 8 formed in the plate 3 and through the 'slots 6 and are provided with nuts 9 to clamp the scraper plates firmly in position upon the supporting plate. By means of the slots forated for the passage of fastenings 12 securing the same in position, the ends of said strip being bowed to form spring arms I3 provided with terminal bearing lugs 14 engaging the outer edge of the scraper blade 5. When the nuts 9 are relaxed, these springs operate to force the scraper blade with a determinate pressure against the periphery of the roll, thus securing an accurate adjustment, after which by tightening the nuts the blade will be fastened in adjusted position. As
shown in the present instance, one of these springs is arranged on each side of "thetransverse center of the supporting plate to uniformly press the scraper blade throughout its length toward the roll.
By reference to Fig. l it will be seen that the scraping devices are arranged'in an outwardly and down- Wardly inclined position at the outside of the .roll and below the center line thereof, by which arrangement the scraped material is adapted to discharge by gravity over the surface ofthe scraper blade and may discharge in any suitable receptacle. The action of the device v will be readily understood and its advantages appreciated.
Having thus described the invention, ,what is claimed as new, is:-
In combination, a roll, a supporting member, a scraper blade slidably mounted'on the supporting member and adapted to move to and from the roll, and a spring connected at its central portion to the said supporting member, the said spring having oppositely projecting arms provided with bearingr portions and adapted to engage the rear portion of the blade.
ln testimony whereof, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WALTER l'. HILL.
Witnesses l .T. W. JonNs'ron, EMMETT DUNGAN.
