certain new and useful Improvements in Expanded Metal; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. v
This invention relates to improvements in expanded -Inetal and more particularly to improvements on my prior invention for metallic lathing, for which Letters Patent of the United States No. 642,056, were issued on the 23rd day of January 1900-. s Expandedmetal is much used not only for lath but also for constructing various structures in which concrete, plastely eement orother similar material is used to afford a finish. As shown in said drawingsziA sheet of metal is slit in parallel staggered slits of a desired length and providing a uniform web of a desired width between parallel rows of slits. The sheet is then formed by supporting the integral; part between the ends of longitudinally adjacent slitson round toppedsupports, and by engaging on each side of the same in the slits means acting to force the cut edges downwardly. A rounded key Bis thereby formed as shown in Figs 3 and 4, the inner or concave sides of which, all open in the same direction as shown in Fig. 1. 'The webs are finally forced laterally causing the cut edges to diverge from their extremities in the generalplane of the sheet, thereby expanding the sheet intermediate of or between the adjacent keys B; and giving the webs a half turn or twist as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3 as in my prior Specification of Letters Patent. When the sheet is expanded the webs afford great strength owing to their half twist or turn, while the curved or rounded portion or key also increases the strength of the sheet as a whole and permits the same to bend uniformly laterally thereof. Inasmuch as the middle portion of each web is practically in a plane parallel with the expanded sheet, the same while affording considerable rigidity is adapted also to bend uniformly longitudinally. When said expanded metal is made of a suitable size for lath, the same may be plastered on either side, but preferably on the concave side or that shown in Fig. 1, in which case the plastering material or cement fills through the shoot forming wedge shaped keys or clenches in the diamond shaped pockets between respective ridges, embedding the flanges b in said material and serving to increase the holding power of said clench, and at the same time entirely covering or embedding all the cut edges of the webs. a 7
Obviously, the expanded metal may be constructed of any desired weight and material or size of mesh, the larger sizes being adapted for use in concrete construction of various kinds. When so constructed, the lateral flanges b serve to afford a positive support for the concrete or other material in which the expanded metal is embedded and adds greatly to the holding power of the metal for the concrete.
Obviously, many details of construction may be modified without departing from the principle of ill) invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. A sheet of expanded metal comprising a slitted and expanded sheet having the webs thereof spread oppositely apart in the direction of the plane of the sheet and turned diagonally therewith and a laterally directed flange between longltudinnlly adjacent webs.
2. A slitted and expanded metal sheet having the webs spread apart in the direction of its general plane and rounded keys-between and connecting adjacent webs and inwardly directed flanges on said keys, said webs twisted laterally between the keys.
3. In an expanded metal a sheet slitted longitudinally forming parallel webs and expanded laterally, the cut ed es of said webs adjacent the extremities of the slit being turned obliquely to the general plane of the sheet, convex keys between and connecting adjacent webs, and an integral inwardly directed flange on each key.
4. A longitudinally slitted and laterally expanded sheet having the cut edges all directed laterally in the direction of the plane of the sheet, rounded keys connecting adjacent webs and convex on the sides opposite that from which the cut edges are directed and cdncave on the side opposite therefrom and a laterally directed flange on each key projecting into the opening between the keys.
