' This invention relates to mixing and measuring ma-.'
- chines; it has for its object improved means for proportioning and feeding into a receptacle or a mixing machine two or more materials. a
The machine which embodies the invention, comprises two or more stationary receptacles located one above the other, or locatedside by side as may be most convenient. Within each of the receptacles is located a-central cylinder, which may be either suspended from the top, or supported on legs fastened to the bottom of the main receptacle, or the included cylinder may be movable upon and with a central shaft. Each of the main or outer receptacles is provided with a circula-r opening at the bottom below the inner cylinder. The bottom through which this opening is cut, is
"spaced from the included cylinder and the included cylinder is larger iii diameter than the circular opening through the underlying bottom of the receptacle, the
difference being so great that thematerial used will rest on the bottom of the main receptacle without falling through the opening; that surface of the material lying between the bottom of the included cylinder and the edge of the opening being at. what may be termed natural slope.
In the space between the bottom of the included cylinder and the bottom of the receptacle is located a sweep arm adj ustably secured to a central shaft and arranged to sweep off from the edge surrounding the opening a portion of the contained material; the material swept oft falls through the opening into the mouth of an included cylinder which lies in the receptacle below, or if the sweep be used in connection with the lowermost cylinders of a series, into the final receptacle for the mingled material.
This apparatus is especially adapted for measuring and mixing wot, cohesive, sticky material such as slaked and part ially cohering lime and wet sand, but
it may also be used for dry materials, and for any mate rial which is not so wet that it will flow, and thus prea vertical section showing a pair of main cylinders with provision for introducing material at the side of the .lower section. Fig. '3, showsabattery of three cylinders, delivering graduated amounts of material into the shell of a conveyor. .Fig. 4, is a plan indicating the location and action of "the sweep. Fig. 5, is a plan of the lower member of the pair of mixers, shown in Fig. 2.

In the device shown in Fig. 1, there are two reccp- ,65
tacles l and 2, mounted in vertical arrangement and supported by a suitable outer frame-work 3. Within the receptacle 1 is acylinder 4 supported above the fioor 5, of the main receptacle by legs 6. .A central shaft 7 supported by inverted step bearings 71 rises through both the receptacles 1 and 2, and is actuated fromany convenientsource of power, as by the screw8 and worm wheel 9. Within the lower receptacle 2 is a cylinder 10, similar to the cylinder 4; this is supported on legs 11 resting on the bottom 12 of the recep- 7 5 tacle 2. The mouth of the cylinder 4 is located above a circular opening 13 through the bottom 5 of the main receptacle 1, with the edge of the cylinder 4 so far back from the edge of the opening 13 that the material lying between the edge of the opening 13 ahd the edge 15 of the cylinder will assume its natural slope or less than its natural slope and will not travel by gravity from the containing part ofthe chamber across the zone 21 of the floor '5 and drop' through the opening 13. The lower edge 17 of the cylinder 10 bears the same relation to the opening 18 through the bottom 12 of the lower receptacle. A
sweep l9 is bolted to the shaft '7 and travels in a circular path, sweeping material off from the zone 21,
through the opening 13, whence it drops into the cylinder 10 and immediately drops into contact with the material that is sweeping off from the floor 12 through the opening 18. The sweep 9 is curved from .the stem part 91 (see Fig. 7) by which it is secured to the shaft and the sweep part 92 passes across the 95 either one of the forms shown, and with eithen one of the forms of receptacles shown. Agitators are used to advantage with some material, and are not of particular use with other materials.
The form shown in Fig. 2, shows funnel extensions 25 through which material may be introduced into "the lower main receptacle 32, and in this form the of the mixture has the same certainty of quantity as with either of the other iorms of the device shown.
The form shown'dn Fig 2 in which the inner cylinder rotates is especially applicable for use in connection with material that is particularly wet and sticky, such as partially wet lime, or wet sugar when thedevice is used for mingling sugar and other substances.
What I claim is:
v1. A graduating device for mixers, having in combination a hopper provided with a central circular opening through the bottom thereof, a cylindrical tubular member located within said, hopper and with its lower edge supported above the bottom of said hopper and retracted from the edge of said central opening, whereby there is formed bctwccn't'he said tube and the hopper bottom a support for material such that the material assumes a natural slope between the lower edge of the cylinder andthe edge of the opening, a shaft extending through said central opening and through said central cylinder, a sweep secured to said shaft and adapted to sweep the hopper bottom underneath the edge of said cylinder, and means for; rotating said shaft, substantially as described. 7
2. A graduating device for mixers, having in combina tion a hopper provided with a central circular opening through the bottom thereof, a cylindrical 'tubular member located within said hopper and with its lower edge supported above the bottom of said hopper and retracted, from the edge of said central opening whereby there is formed between the said tube and the hopper bottom a supportfor material such that the material assumes a natural slope between the lower edge of the cylinder and the edge of the sonvvs opening, a shaft extending through said central opening and through said central cylinder, a sweep secured to said shaft and adapted to sweep the hopper bottom underneath the edge of, said cylinder, means for adjusting the sweep,
and means for rotating the shaft, substantially as described.
3. In a device for measuring and mixing substances, the combination of a plurality, of stationary hoppers located in vertical arrangement, each having a circular opening through its bottom, a cylinder in each hopper having its lower edge spaced from the bottom of said hopper and Bi) withdrawn from the edge of the opening through the bottomof said hopper, a shait passing vertically through said hoppers and provided with sweep members, one for each hopper, each of said sweeps being adapted to force material toward and into said central opening, substantially as described.
4. In a measuring and mixing apparatus, in combination with a plurality of stationary hoppers arranged one over another, each provided witha circular opening through the bottom thereof, a cylinder located within eachhopper having its bottomedge spaced from the bottom of said hopper and withdrawn from the edge of the opening through the bottom of said hopper, whereby provision is made for material to assume its natural slope, a sweep for each'hopper extending from within the opening therethrough' across a portion of the bottom thereof and under the edge of said included cylinder, substantially as described.
5. In a measuring and mixing device, in combination with a stationary receptacle provided with a circular opening through the bottom thereoifa rotary suieer} adapted to force into 'and thr'oughsaid opening the desired proportion of the contents oi said receptacle, a cylinder located in said receptacle above said opening with its bottom spaced from the bottom through which said opening is made,'and with izslow'er periphery of larger diameter than the periphery 75 of said opening, substantially as described. p
