ADVERTISING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 30, 1907.
l Application filed March 18,1907. Serial No. 362,9(il
To all whom 'it 'may concern: I
Beit known'that I, JOHN T'. H. MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention .relates to advertising devices and has particular reference vto improvements insuch as partake of the character'of the postal letters or cards.
The object of my invention is to provide a combined circular letter and envelop in which a return postal, article or sample may be inclosed and sent through the mails.
My invention consists generally in a substantially rectangular, ungummed, sheet of `thick paper or cardboard having a letter or other communication printed upon its inner face, s aid sheet being transversely scored to form upper and lower flaps or portions, the lower flap of said sheet having inwardly foldable tongues at its ends to retain a postal card or the like thereon, and 11i/*ans for fastening the free edges of the sheet together when folded. i
My invention will be more readily understood by; reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which; l
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an advertising device embodying my invention;` Fig. 2 is alike perspective view of a modified form of my invention; Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the device of Fig. 1 partially folded and containing several cards or inserts; Fig. 4 a like perspective view of the device shown in Fig. 2;` and Fig. 5 shows the device folded and ready to he'seg cured by the sticker or seal. A
In carrying out my invention I prefer, as shown in the drawings, to employ a substantially rectangular sheet of ungummed, thick paper or card board. lThe inner face of this sheet bears a commercial letter or other The purpose of the device is tol serve as an ordinary. commercial letter and also as an envelop, it being frequently desirable to send small articles, such as return postals, cards, samples and the like through the mails. To hold such articles Iprovide the lower iiap, B, of my device with inwardly turnedcorners or lugs, 6, adapted to engage the ends of a card or other insert, as shown in Fig. These lugs, tongues, or turned-in corners may take the form of the corners, (if, shown in Figs. 2 and 4, the same serving exactly the same purpose as the struck-up lugs, 6, of Figs. 1 and 2. When the inserts have been placed as shown in the drawings, the lower flap is folded upon th'c intermediate flap, and then the upper flap is folded down upon the other parts so that the inserts or cards are held between the folds of the sheet and the lugs or turned-in corners of the lower fiap. The free edges of the parts, A and C, are then sealed by means of a sticker or seal, 7, after which the inserts cannot escape from lthe envelop notwithstanding the fact that the ends of the letter are open. l i
A special advantage of this advertising device is that it may be sent through the mails as third class matter.
Other advantages are that, when opened, it presents the appearance of an ordinary, personal, commercial letter and also places the inserted card, sample., or the like, directly in the hands ol` the person opening the folded, sheet or envelop.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new in and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
An advertising device comprising n suhstnnlinlly rectangular nnguxnmed sheet el' thick paper er card hoard adapted to beauupon its liiner face n letter or other comA ninnicatlon und transversely scored to form un intermediate portion und upper and lower flaps, snid lower ilzip having turned in corners lo hold award or other insert ugninst endwise movement. in Ille sheet, when folded, :lud nienns fastening the l'lee edges ol the sheet when folded, substantially :is described.
In Lestiu'rouy whereof, lliuve liei'ounlo sel. lny hand, this 11th day ofhl'ltch, 1001', in ihe presence el l\vo subscribing williesses.' i
.vous T. n. MITCHELL.
\\itnesses z A. W. Nnnson, JoilN It, Lnnnvnn.
