To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES 'LiconsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Warren, in the county of Warren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gas-Engines,- of
which the following is a specification. p,
My invention relatesto certain new and useful improvements in gas engines and particular" to that class of engines which is characterized as c the hit-;
and-miss'type'; and my invention consists of the parts and the constructions, arrangements and combinations of parts which I will hereinafter describe and claim.
In the accompiuying drawing forming part of this specification and in which similar letters of reference '15 indicate like parts in the several views-the figure represents a. longitudinal elevation view, partly in section, of an engine cylinder and portion of a bed plate, showing the intcrnalhushing and the manner I in which it is secured in place.
In carrying out my invention 1 may employ the salient features thereof in connection with an engine of the hit-and-miss type ion-with any of the usual types of explosive engines without any departure from the spirit of my invention.
In the drawing; I illustrate an engine of the horizontal cylinder type' whose cylinder is appropriately secured to a bed-plate C of any suitable and desired design and construction and which cylinder comprises, essentially, a readily removable bushing A. which is first put loosely in place and is then rigidly secured to the lied-plate to therohy form an inner liner for the cylinder. p
The extcrior'of the cylinder is formed by a waiter jacket shell B in which water is caused to circulate hy any of the well known methods in use, or in any appropriate manner to effect the cooling of the cylinder.

I placed appropriate packings which are designed to render the joints at the aforesaid places water tight. Thus the joint between the water jacket shell 15 and the end of the bushing at A, the joint between the bushing aiid the bed plate, and the joint between the water jacket shell and the bed plate are all packed withsome appropriate packing to make these joints secure against leak-n.ge;-and as the packing at the .first-named point must also stand the explosive force ofthe charge the importance of properly. securing the same will he manifest. This latter packing and in fact the packings between the sin-ll and bushing and the bed plate, are secured firmly and effectively in place-by-clamping together the water jacket shell,
the bushing, and the lied plate, and this object is obtained by the use of the studs D and nuts, or other equivalent or appropriate means.
By channeling or countersinking the inner'endflof the water jacket shell to form the aforesaid seat or shoulder, and the placing of the packing upon this shoulder and seating the bushing endwisc thereon, I am enahled to obtain an especially effective joint, this being largely the result of the shape of the joint and the manner of seating the bushing, which make it practically impossible for the'gasos to be hlown around the square corner of the fit hetwoon the shell and the end'of the bushing.
