Description

APPLICATION FILED MAR. 19. 1915.
Patented Mar. 28,1916.
Inventor!- 7 Attornys I HARRY HOMEWOOD AND RICHARD A SGHRUGNAL, OF FRESNO, CALIFORNIA.
PISTON-RING FOB GASOLE NE-ENGINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. March 19, 1915. Serial No. 15,585.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HARRY Hoarnwooo and Brennan A. ScnnUoNAL, citizens of the United States, residing at Fresno, in the county of Fresno, State of California, have invented a new and useful Piston-Ring for Gasolene-Engines, of which the following is a specification. K
The present invention relates to improve ments in piston rings or packings.
One object of the presentv invention, is the provision of a ring of this character, composed of a plurality of cooperating sections, two of the sections of which are constructed as incasing members so that a normally expanding ring may be supported therein and at the same time, effect the others to produce the desired packing eflect when disposed in cooperation with a piston and the cylinder wall.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a simple and inexpensive ring of this character, which is easily assembled and readily placed in the usual recess of a power piston.
With the foregoing and other objects in.
view which will appear as the description proceeds the invention resides in the combination and arrangementoi parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete ring. section taken through the ring. Figs3, 4 and 5 are perspective views of the respective sections of the ring.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the inner section or member of the ring, said member being an open ring or annulus, l -shaped in cross section, the same being cut or split at 2, at an oblique angle, and such annulus 1 cooperatingwith the outer annulus or ring 3, which is also formed L-shaped in cross section, withthe flange thereof extending inwardly, instead of outwardly as in the annulus 1. The annulus 3 is cut or split at an oblique angle as at 4, and such annuli are assembled as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so that the open portions thereof will be out of alinement and thus terminate, respectively, the annulus 1 against the Fig. 2 is a cross posed between the flange of the annulus 3 and flange of the annulus 3, and in the annulus 3, the open position 4: terminating adjacent the flange of the annulus 1. Thus the gas will be prevented from passing at any of these points between the piston (not shown) and the cylinder (not shown).
In order-to properly assemble the two annuli 1 and 3, so that the same will assumethe position as shownrin Figs. 1 and 2 an open r ng 5 cut or split obliquely at 6 is disposed to rest upon the flange of the annulus adjacent the edge of the annulus 1, and nor mally having tends to expand the annuli 1 and 3 so that they will properly engage the walls of the cylinder of the engine and thus produce the desired tight joint between the piston and the cylinder,
It will be noted that the cylindrical flange of the inner split ring 1 overlaps the cylindrical flange of the outer split ring 3, and
that the other or flat flange of the ring. 1' 1 overlaps the edge of the cylindrical flange of the ring 3, while the other or flat flange of the ring 3 is spaced from the cylindrical flange of the ring 1 to provide a spacefdr accommodating the split ring 5 which is disposed between the flat flange of the ring 3 and the cylindrical flange of the ring 1. It will thus be seen that the open portions of the respective annuli of the present ring, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1, will be out of alinement, it being especially desirable that such open portions will be approximately at the one-third points of the complete circumference of the packing ring, so that the cut portion of the expanding ring 5 will be interthe body portion of the annulus 1. It will thus be seen that the passage of gas through the respective open portions of the sections or annuli of the present ring will be prevented by the solid portion of either one of the annuli but that all of the sections will be normally held together by the protected open annulus 5 which is a straight open ring, the open portion of which is cut at an oblique angle instead of straight as is the usual practice.
What is claimed is.
A piston packing embodying inner and outer split rings of L-shaped cross section having overlapped cylindrical flanges, the outer flange of the inner ring overlapping the edge of the cylindrical flange of the outer Patented Mar. 28, 1916.
