TOOL-HAND LE Specification of Letters Patent.
, Patented July 30, 1907.
Application filed January 29, 1906. Serial No. 298.341.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EGBERJ. T. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tool-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates inore particularly to the class of handles used in connection with tools having a socket for receiving the tapering shank of the handle, such as socket-Chisels.
The object of this invention is to provide a light, strong and inexpensive handle which cushions the blows received by the same, so as to protect the tool from injury and breakage.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure l is a side elevation oi the improved handle. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a cross section in line 3-3, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The handle may be of any suitable or ordinary shape and has the usual tapering shank A and the shoulder A at the upper end of the shank.
The central or body portion B of the handle is made of wood or similar material, while its shank A and the portion adjacent to the shank consist of superposed disks, washers or layers a of leather or similar fibrous material possessing sutlicient resilience or elasticity to cushion the blows received by the handle and prevent the injury to the tool liable to result from the use of a hard and rigid handle which transmits dead blows to the tool. The tip or upper end O of the handle is preferably composed of similarcushioning washers c in order to protect the wooden body section of the handle from the blows ot' the mallet or hammer and prevent splitting thereof, but if desired, these washers may be omitted and the wooden section continued to the extreme top of the handle.
The leather washers a, c are firmly glued together under pressure, and the washers and the wooden section B are centered and further united by a core-rod D secured by gluing or otherwise in an axial bore or opening c of the handle. This rod preferably extends from the extreme lower end of the shank to a point above the wooden section but short of the top washers or layers of the tip C, so that the blows received by the tip are not transmitted directly through the red, but only through the washers and the wooden section. For this purpose, the bore 6 extends a suitable distance above the upper end of the rod, as shown in Fig. 2.
The leather or fibrous washers forming the lower portion of the handle extend some distance above the shoulder A, so as to receive the thrust of the socket of the chisel or other tool, thus not only acting as a cushion but also protecting the lower end of the wooden section and effectually preventing splitting of the same.
My improved handle, while possessing the desirable cushioning capacity above described, at the same time combines lightness with strength and durability and can be manufactured at comparatively small cost.
I claim as my invention:
1. A chisel or other end-driven tool-handle having a tapering shank and a shoulder at the upper end of the shank, the body-portion of the handle being constructed of wood and its lower or shank poition consisting of a series of superposed layers of leather extending from the lower end thereof to a point above said shoulder, substantially as set forth.
2. A chisel or other enddriven tool-handle comprising a wooden central section, a tip composed of superposed leather disks or layers, a tapering lower portion having a shoulder and composed of a series of similar superposed leather disks extending from the lower end thereof to a point above said shoulder, and a core-rod passing through EGBERT 'l. BROWN.
