To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALDEN F. AYERS, a citizen ofv the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and-State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool-Handles and Tools; and do declarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i Y
My invention relates to tool handles and tools, and the object of the invention is to provide a handle for a line or kit of tools which can be interchangeably used with said tools and easily applied and removed and in which the tools themselves are constructed with uniform shanks, all substantially as shown and described perspective elevation of the tool or screw-driver in Fig. 1.
A represents the handle and C the tool, and the said parts are separably united, so that the handle can be removed from one tool and placed on another as oc'casion may require. Thus, a' screw-driver is illustrated in the drawings herewith to give one example of use as well as to disclose the points of construction necessary to render the invention available. I might show a chisel or other tool having a shank adapted to be engaged by handle A, and I provide all tools intended to be used with this handle with corresponding shanks. To this end the said shanks are cylindrical or round in cross section, and are provided each with a pin or lug c on the end of the shank and eccentric thereto as shown. This lug, pin or projection also is round or cylindrical or of such construction as to adapt the handle to have a limited rotary movement thereon bore a and in extension thereof at its top to receive the lug c.
In use the handle A is placed upon the tool with the lug or pin 0 inserted in the small bore a, and then the handle is given a slight rotation in respect to the tool soias to fasten it thereon. In doing 'this the shank 0 gets crowded against the wall of, the bore aopposite the eccentric engagement at a, c, and the handle is firmly faste ed. Then to release it a reverse turn with a possible grip on the tool to hold it will be found suflicient.
It will be seen that the eccentric projection cis within the are of the end of the shank but ofiits center, so that in boring the handle therefor the bore a is formed first and then the smaller bore a is drilled in its top as far off the center of bore a as the eccentric pin 0 requires and so that it is just within the arc of said bore.
What I claim is 1. A tool having a substantially cylindrical shank and a cylindrical projection on the end of the shank eccentric to the axisthereof, in combination with a handle having a bore corresponding to the shape of the said shank and a hole above said bore corresponding in shape to said projection, and whereby said parts are adapted to be interlocked upon rotation, one upon the other.
2. The combination of a tool and a detachable handle therefor, said parts constructed with respective external and internal eccentric surfaces circumfercntially thereof and adapted to frictionally engage .each other, whereby interlocking of said parts is efieeted by the rotation of either the handle or the tool.
3. A tool comprising two single separable members constituting a complete device and constructed to sleeve freely oneupon the other and to have a limited degree of rotation one within the other, and said members provided with respective external and internal eccentric surfaces circumferentially opposite each other, whereby initial and partial rotation of either member rigidly unites said parts for joint revolution.

The combination of a tool and a holder free to sleeve one upon'the other, said parts constructed with opposed eccentric wedgim: and rotary limiting surfaces axially thereof and adapted to lock said tool frictioually' upon the holder by a limited rotary movement of either the tool or the holder.
