UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUlS E. BUNNELL AND ARTHUR J. HOOKER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
HEEL-LIFT PASTING AND DELIVERING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 30, 1907.
Application filed February 10, 1906. Serial No. 300,453.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LoUIs E. 'BUNNELL and An- THUR .T. HOOKER, citizens of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heel-Lift Pasting and Delivery Machines, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to a top lift and heel pasting and delivering machine, adapted to feed the pasted top lifts into the gripping jaws or receiving orifice of a heel nailing machine.
So far as we are aware, at present, the top lifts are pasted by hand and presented to the receiver of this heel nailing machine, which operation being wholly manual, is comparatively slow.
The object of the present invention is to provide a machine that will uniformly paste the top lifts and heels and deliver them accurately and rapidly to the receiver of the nailing machine. As the carrier which effects this delivery, must register accurately with the receiving orifice, it is the further object of this invention to provide adjustment which will insure this perfect registration.
Other objects of the invention relate to the means for operating the pasting brush, to the means for operating the carrier, and to the adjustment of the lift supporting portion of the carrier.
These and other features of the invention will be more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in Whicl1:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a section on line my, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on line y, y, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detailed sectional view on line w, 10, Fig. 2, of the laterally adjustable plates forming the top lift and heel support of the carrier. Fig. 6 is an inside plan view of the gear, pawl and ratchet feed for rotating the pasting brush in one direction of movement. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the preferred form of my device. Fig. 8 is a section on line .2, z, Fig. 1.
1 represents a'base plate, upon which is mounted the vertical hollow screwed threaded column 2, both laterally and vertically adjustable on the base plate.
3 represents a horizontal gib-Way, provided with a sleeve 4 fitting into the top of the column 2 and having a vertical key-way engagement 5 with said column, see Fig. 4, which holds the gib-way against rotation.
6 represents a carrier gibbed to the horizontal way 3. The heel lift support of said carrier is formed by the laterally adjustable plates 7, 7, separated as shown in Fig. 2, to provide access between them for the action of the pasting brushes 8, 8.
The means for adjusting the plates 7, 7, are shown in Fig. 5. These plates 7, 7, have keys 9, 9, engaging into the transverse slot or key-way 10, in the upper face of the carrier 6. These plates are further provided with the upright posts 11, 11", through which passes the adjusting screw 12 having right and left screw threaded engagement with the said uprights. Adjusting screw 12 is swiveled in the pillar 13 of the carrier 6 and is provided with a thumb knurl at its outer end. 7
, 15 represents a tongue lying upon the plates 7, 7 at the rear end thereof, the end of the tongue forming an abutment for engaging the straight edge of the lift resting upon the plates 7, 7. The tongue 15 is adjustable longitudinally of the carrier by means of the screw 16, which has a threaded engagement with the collar 17 of the carrier.
By means of the lateral adjustability of the plates 7, 7, and the longitudinal adjustability of the tongue 15, a support is formed on the carrier, which is adjustable to any size of top or heel lift, and which affords access for the application of paste to the under side of the top or heel lift.
The front end of the gib-way 3 is provided with the depending leaves 18, 18, between which is mounted the journal shaft 19. Journaling upon this shaft 19 is a sleeve 20 to which the brushes 8, 8, are fixed. On one end of the sleeve 20 is a ratchet wheel 21, see Figs. 1, 3 and 5.
The carrier 6 is provided with a longitudinal rack 22, engaging with gear wheel 23 on the outside of leaf 18. Gear 23 is fixed to a shaft 24 which journals in the leaf l8 and which carries a gear 25, on the inside of the leaf 18, see Fig. 6. Gear 25 meshes with a gear wheel 26 journaled on the shaft 19, opposite the end of the ratchet wheel 21. Gear 26 is provided with a spring pressed pawl 27 held normally in engagement with the teeth of the ratchet wheel 21.
From this description of the mechanism it will be understood that in operation a top or heel lift is laid upon the plates 7, 7, with its straight edge abutting the end of the tongue 15, the carrier 6 is pushed forward by hand or otherwise which rotates the pasting brushes as the top or heel lift is moved across them, the extreme forward end of the stroke of the carrier delivering the top or heel lift into the receiving member of the nail driving machine, which latter machine is not shown in the drawing. In the return movement of the carrier the pawl 27 passes idly over the key to the ratchet 21 and the pasting brushes are not rotated. Any suitable means may be employed for applying glue to the brushes, and suitable actuating mechanism, may, if desired, be applied for positively reciprocating the carrier 6. 28 represents an external sleeve threaded on the column 2, the upper end of which abuts under the T-head of the gib-way 3. It is obvious that by rotating the said nut 28 the gib-way may be raised and lowered With the carrier, being held from rotation by the vertical key-way engagement between the sleeve 4 and the column 2.
We prefer to employ the actuating means shown in Fig. 7, in which 30 is a foot treadle connected. to a link 31 pivoted to one end of crank arm 32, provided at one end with a slit 33 through which passes a bolt 34: on the carrier 6. When this treadle is actuated the carrier 6 will be reciprocated. The base 1 preferably sets upon the table 36 and is secured by bolts 37. Column 2 has preferably a flanged base 38, see Fig. 4, slotted laterally, through which slots, pass bolts 39 engaging with base 1, see Fig. 1 which provides a laterally adjustable clamp between said bases.
40 represents bolts passing through base 38 and abutting against base 1 for vertically adjusting the device.
Having described our invention, we claim:-
A machine for pasting and delivering top lifts to the re ceiving element of a heel nailing machine, consisting of a horizontal guide, a top lift carrier adapted to be reciprocated thereon, means for pasting the under surface of the lift when the carrier is reciprocated on the guide, and adjusting means adapted to accurately register the delivery end of said guide with the said receiving element of a nailing machine, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
