HEEL-MAILING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 399,777, dated March 19, 1889. Application filed November '7, 1888. Serial No. 290,178. (No model.)
To all LU/b07711 it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH Hoencn POPE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spanking and Slugging Devices, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.-
IO This invention. relates to an improved spanking and slugging device for heeling-inachines for boots and shoes, and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- I 5 Figure 1 represents a plan view of the device, shown in combination with a pair of heel and top-lift clamps, and Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the same. Fig. represents a detail plan view of the perforated spankerplate, showing, partly in section, its connection to the handle by which it is operated. Fig. 4 represents a longitudinal section on the line A B, shown in Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 represents a cross-section on the line (i D, shown. in
Fig.1.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
a in Figs. 1 and 2 represents the up-and down movable plunger-rod of a l1eeling-machine of the kind shown in the patent granted to Tyler and Merritt, June 30, 1885, No. 321,401; and 1) represents the stationary sleeve in which said plunger-rod is guided, as
usual.
c represents a hub or sleeve secu red to and surrounding the sleeve Z), which hub serves as a support for the heel and top-lift block (.1.
e e are the expansive heel-clamps pivoted in their rear ends, at c e,to a block, 6, preferably made adjustable on pins e 6 secured to the block (Z, and made adjustable to and from the latter by means of the thumbscrew 6*.
is a yielding spring connecting the heelclamps e e, as usual.
f f are the top-lift clamps arranged at a right angle to the abovementioned heelclamps; and the said top-lift clamps are constructed precisely like the heel-clamps, and,
like the latter, are pivoted at ff to a block,
f, adapted to slide 011 pin f f, secured to the block d and made adjustable thereon by means of a thumb-screw, f screwed into the block (7, as shown in Fig. l.
is a yielding spring connecting the toplift clamps, as usual. I wish to state that the construction and arrangement of the said heel and top-lift clamps does not form the Sub jGCt-Hlttf-IJGPOf my present application, as the 6o same is fully shown, claimed, and described in a separate application for a heeling-machine filed by me.
9 is a rod secured to the hub (Z, and to said rod is clamped, by means of the set-screw 72-, the handle 72/, as shown in the drawings.
In one piece with the handle h is made the grooved crossbar h", in which is adj ustably secured the dovetailed carrier 7L3. Above the said carrier 72, is located the spankeieplate 7o holder h", which latter is pivoted to the carrier 71. in one end by means of the screw-bolt h, secured to the carrier 7t, said bolt projecting through a perforation in the holder 71;, and adapted to be adjustably secured to the 75 carrier its by means of a nut, 7b, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4.
To the opposite end of the blade-holder h" is secured the downwardly-projecting screwbolt 1', passing loosely through a perforation So in the carrier hiand a slotted or forked opening, 7L in the cross-bar h, as shown in Fig.
5 and in dotted lines in Fig. 3, said screwbolt being provided with a fastening-nut, i,
as shown in Figs. 2 and 5, by means of which 8 5 the holder 7i and carricrh are secured to the cross-bar 71 after the said parts have been adjusted relatively to said part h".
In a slit in the holders h is inserted the metal spanker and slugger plate H, which is pivoted to a pin, II, secured to the holder 71- in one end, and by means of a detachable pin, II, passing through perforation in the holder h and plate II, as shown in Figs. 1, 2,
3, and 5.
The plate H may be easily detached from the holder 7i whenever so desired simply by removing the pin H and drawing the said plate out from the slit in the said holder.
The plate ii is solid, with the exception of I00 the semicircular, or nearly so, shaped perforation K near its inner end, and elongated, preferably inclined, perforations 70 70 near its outer end, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
The invention is adapted for use on a heel-- ing-machine of the kind shown in the United through the heel and sole in the usual manner, leaving the nail-heads projecting a little above the top of the heel. The jack is then moved away from the heel-clamps, a top lift in the meantime having been placed between the top-lift clamps ff. The operator takes hold of the handle it and swings the said toplift clamps to the position previously occupied by the heel-clamps. The previouslynailed heel is then moved to its original position below the nail-die and forced upward, causing the projecting upper ends of the nails to be forced into the under side of the top lift and the latter spanked onto the ends of the nails by the interposition of the solid portion of the spanker-plate H between the nail-die and that portion of the top lift where the fastening-nails were previously driven. The slugs or sight-nails may afterward be driven into the heel through the perforation K and one or both of the perforations 7c in the spanker-plate H without the need of takin g off the pressure on the heel orthe removal of the spanker-plate.
WVhat I wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim, is r 1. In a heeling machine, the expansive clamps f f, and the hub d, with its handle h, combined with the plate H, having the front and rear perforations, K k k, as and for the purpose set forth. In a heelingmachine, the perforated spanker and slugger plate H and the holder h, secured together, as described, in combination with the handle h, the carrier 71-, laterally adjustable in guides in said handle and pivoted to the holder, and having means, substantially as described, for securing the said carrier and holder in an adjustable manner to the said handle, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a heeling-machine, the hub d, having the expansive clamps ff, and the rod g, secured to said hub, combined with the detachable handle h and the perforated spankerplate II, secured to said handle in an adjustable manner, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 2d day of January, A. D. 1889.
JOSEPH HORACE POPE.
