AUTOMATIC PUMP-COUPLIN G.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July as, 1907.
Application tiled July 6, 1908. Boris! No. 824,971.
To all whom it may conccm:
Be it known that I, Cannons B. HsLnsnsN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aurora, in the county of Cloud and State of Kansas, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Pump-Couplers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in automatic pump couplers, especially adapted for use with wind mills, and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure l is a side elevation of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the lower end of the brace. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the coupler head, and Fig. 6 is a similar view of the sliding frame. Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 3.
In the present embodiment of my invention, a coupler head A comprising a casing a having open ends a, is provided upon its sides with grooves or depressions a in which is bolted the mill rod B, the said rod being forked at its lower end. The space between the sides of the casing is crossed by a partition a dividing the interior of the easing into two longitudinal passages, a relatively wide front pamge a" and a relatively narrow rear passage 0". The forward edge of the easing is provided with a socket a, and below the socket is a plurality of notches a all for a purpose to be hereafter described. A brace 11' is slidably mounted in the rear passage, and the lower end of the brace is adapted to be coupled to the pump piston a in any suitable manner. The casing a is of sudzl a length that the brace a is at no time entirely withdrawn therefrom, the brace thus serving as a guide for the casing whereby to retain the mill rod and the pump piston in substantial alineinent with each other.
A coupling lever C is pivoted to lugs a upon the front face of the brace a near the lower end thereof, and the said coupling lever is provided with an angular portion c adapted to engage the socket a when the casing is in proper position. The upper end of this lever is normally maintained in separated relation with respect to the brace a by means of a spring a secured at one end to the brace and resting at its other end against the coupling lever. Plates (2 are secured upon each side of the brace a near its junction with the coupling lever, and the forward ends of the plates project upon each side of the coupling lever whereby to guide the coupling lever and to retain the spring in its proper position.
A pump head comprising a ring c is adapted to be secured to the top of the pump in any suitable manner, aud'the said ringis provided with an integral upright am e having an angular portion c extending beneath the coupler head and slotted to permit the pe of the brace a and the coupling lever C. A swinging lever c is pivoted to 2 lug c" upon the front of the ring, and upon the upper end of the swinging lever is pivotally mounted the pump handle D. The pump handle D is forked as at d, on the outer side of its connection with the swinging lever, and that portion upon the outer side of the fork is grooved upon its under face as at d. A sliding frame it is mounted upon the brace a" and the upright arm 1:, the said frame being provided with longitudinal slots d', 11 upon each side between the arm and the brace, and with a friction roller d upon the outer side of the brace and engaging the same, and the forked arms of the handle are pivotally connected to the irame as at d. It is evident from the description that when the handle is manipulated, the sliding frame will be moved vertically on the brace and upright arm. A second lever E is pivoted between the forks of the pump handle D, and to the inner end thereof is pivoted the end of a link a having journaled thereon in the free end, a friction roller 2, moving in the slots d oi the sliding frame d", and between the coupling lever and the upright arm a. At a point on the coupling lever G adjacent to the plates 0, on the brace a, is a notch c, which is adapted to receive the pivot bolt (1 connecting the forked arms of the pump handle with the coupling lever 0, when the said frame is in contact with the said plates,
In operation, when it is desired to couple the pump handle to the pump, the lever E is moved toward the pump handle D until the said lever rests in the groove on the under face thereof. This movement pushes the friction roller e toward the brace a, carrying the coupling lever C out of engagement with the socket a, and releasing the piston rod a of the pump from the coupler head A. Upon elevating the free end of the pump handle, and still retaining the lever E in the beforementioned position, the sliding frame d is moved downward until the pivot bolt d rests in the notch c provided therefor in the coupling lever. The pump handle is now connected with the pump piston as long as the lever E is retained in its beforementioned position. Upon releasing the pump handle, the pressure of the spring 0 tends to move the coupling lever away from the brace, and when the windmill actuates the mill rod B, and the coupler head A, the angular portion of the coupling lever will again engage with the socket 11, thus coupling the mill and the pump piston.
It will be evident from the description, that when the lever E is in position against the pump handle, the motion of pumping will automatically couple the piston rod and the pump handle, and that when the pump handle is released, the windmill will be automatically coupled with the piston rod.
It will be noticed from an inspection of Fig. 1, that the angular portion 0 of the upright bar this provided at the and adjacent to the brace a with lugs 0', against which the friction roller d of the frame (F is adapted-to rest when the pump handle is released from the pump.
