UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
DANIEL W. DRISCOLL AND JOHN A. RENNIEE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
EXPANSION-DRUM FOR HOISTING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jury 23, 1907.
Application filed February 12,1907. Serial No. 356,977.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DANIEL W. DnisooLL and .Toi-IN A. RENNIEE, citizens of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Expansion Drums for I-Ioisting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable' those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hoisting apparatus, and the object thereof is to provide an expansion drum for use in hoisting apparatus of various kinds and classes and with which is employed a cable one end of which is connected, in practice, with an article or device to be raised, or raised and lowered, the construction and operation of the drum -being such that the diameter thereof is increased or decreased at each revolution thereof so as to increase or decrease the amount of cable wound thereon according to the direction in which the drum is turned.
Our improvement may be applied to elevators, cranes, or other kinds or classes of machinery designed for lifting, or lifting and lowering, a load of any kind and is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of our improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a side view of our improved expansion drum device; Fig. 2 a transverse vertical section thereof; and, Fig. 3 a partial section on the line 3-3 of Fig. l.
In the practice of our invention as shown in the drawing, we provide a suitable frame a having side members provided with radially arranged arms or supports a2, four of which are employed in the construction shown, and the radially arranged arms or supports a2 are provided with longitudinal slots a3 and in the outer sides of said arms or supports are grooves a* in which are mounted slides b provided with projecting.
lugs or fingers b2. The radial arms or supports a2 are arranged in pairs opposite each other, and mounted in the opposite slides b are shafts c, four of which are employed in the construction shown, and the shafts c are provided with sheaves c2 which fill the space between r the side members of the frame a but only part of which are shown in the drawing. A shaft d passes centrally through the frame a, in the form of construction shown, and the shafts c are arranged concentrically around said shaft d, and the shaft d is provided at its opposite ends and outside of the side members of the frame a with disks e, the inner sides of which are provided with spiral ribs el in connection with which the outwardly directed lugs or fingers b` operate as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The shaft cl is also provided, in the form of construction shown, with a large gear wheel J" which is secured to one end thereof and geared in connection therewith is a smaller gear wheel or pinion d mounted on a power shaft d* which may be' turned or driven in any desired manner.
Secured to the bottom of the main frame or to any other stationary support adjacent thereto is a cable f, said cable being secured to the bottom of the left hand side of the frame a, in the construction shown, and said cable is successively passed around all the sheaves eZ on the shafts c from the left hand end of said shafts to the right hand end thereof, from which point it is carried out through the main frame and passed around a pulley g supported at one side of the main frame and from which it may be carried up and connected with an elevator or any other device or article to be hoisted, or hoisted and lowered, this operation being similar to that of connecting the hoisting cable with an elevator, if the device is used in connection with an elevator, or with any other article or device to be raised and lowered in any kind or class of a hoisting, or hoisting and lowering, machine.
The shafts c with the sheaves c2 mounted thereon form the drum of the apparatus and when the shaft d is turned in one direction the said shafts c will be gradually forced outwardly by the operation of the projecting`lugs or fingers b2 in connection with the spiral ribs eL on the disks e, and when said shaft is turned in the other direction this operation will be reversed and the shafts c will move inwardly.
In order to accomplish the proper winding of the cable f on the sheaves c2 of the shafts c, one of said shafts is mounted at an inclination or angle to the shaft d, as clearly indicated in 'dotted lines at c4 in Fig. 2, and as shown in Fig. 3, and in supporting the ends of the shaft d we provide blocks c5 having parts c( which pass through the slots a in the radial arms or supports a2 and are connected with the slides b all as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The shafts c and sheaves c2 mounted thereon form, as hereinbefore stated, the expansion drum of the apparatus, and in the operation of said apparatus these shafts may be gradually forced outwardly so as to eX- pand the diameter of the drum or be drawn inwardly so as to contract said diameter. Our invention is not limited to any particular means for accomplishing this result, the shaft d, the disks e provided with the spiral ribs e2 and the slides b operating in connection with said ribs and with which the shafts c are connected being simply shown as one means by which the aforesaid result may be accomplished.
It will also be apparent that the shaft d, in the form of construction shown, may be operated or turned by any desired means, device or power mechanism.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isz- 1.- ln a hoisting apparatus, a drum comprising a frame provided with a plurality of parallel shafts mounted concentrically around a common center, a plurality of sheaves mounted on each of said shafts, a hoisting cable Wound around all of said shafts and on the pulleys mounted thereon, and means for movingr said shafts radially when the hoisting apparatus is in use.
2. In a hoisting apparatus, a frame the opposite sides of which are provided with radial guides, parallel drum shafts mounted in said guides and coneentrically around a common center and provided with sheaves, a hoisting cable wound around said shaft and on said sheaves, and means for moving said shafts radially when the hoisting apparatus is in use.
In a hoisting apparatus, a drum comprising' a frame, a plurality of parallel shafts mounted concentrically around a common center in said frame and movable radially of said frame while retaining a parallel position, each of said shafts being also provided with a plurality of sheaves, and means Afor moving said shafts radially when the hoisting apparatus is in use.
4. In an apparatus. of the class described, a frame, the opposite sides of which are provided with radial slots or openings, drum shafts mounted in said slots or openings and provided Awith sheaves, and means for moving said shalts radially in said slots or openings, comprising a central shaft provided at its opposite ends with disks having spiral ribs on their inner sides, and slides mounted in said frame and with which said shafts are connected and provided with projecting `members which operate in connection with said ribs.
5. In an. apparatus of thevclass described, a frame, the opposite sides of which are provided with radial slots or openings, drum shafts mounted in said slots or openings and provided with sheaves, and means for moving said shafts radially in said slots or openings, comprising a central shaft provided at its opposite ends with disks having spiral ribs on their inner sides, and slides mounted in said frame and with which said shafts are connected and provided with projecting members which operate in connection with said ribs, one of saiddrum shafts being mounted at an angle to the central shaft,
In testimony that We claim the foregoing as our invention We have signed our names in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 9th day of February 1907.
