Patented July 16, 1907.
Application filedAprll 2219'07. Serial No. 369,671.l 4
To all whom it may concern:
lBe it known that I, .IoHN MARSHALL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filing-Boxes, of lwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, formingl part of this specification My invention relates to a filing box that may be used lseparately from a case'or be in the form of a drawer of a cabinet orease to serve as a receptacle for papers of any description vwhich it may be desired to file therein he invention has for its object to provide simple and' inexpensive means whereby a follower mounted in ythe box may be held firmly inv any position to which it may be adjusted and which nie-aus lis readily operated through 'the medium ofthe follower to permit of the follower being shifted in the box.
Figure I is a longitudinal vertical section taken through my filing box. Fig. II is a vertical cross section taken through the box, the follower beingshown partly in elevation. Fig. III is an enlarged vertical section taken on line IIL-III, Fig. II. Fig.' IV isan 'enlarged vertical section taken through one of the locking devices withwhich the follower of my' box is associated. Fig. V is a perspective-view of the fragment of one ofthe side walls of the box, one of the locking devices and a-znodilied form of channel in conjunction with which the locking device operates.
Referring to the accompanying drawings: l desig. natos the bottom of the box, 2 the end walls and 3 the side walls of the box. vIn the sidewalls 3 and extending longitudinally thereof are channels4 preferably in l 'the form of grooves but which may, if desired, be in the rearwardly and inwardly relative to the 'cnil wi'lls of' form of 'slots extending entirely through said walls.
5 designates a follower that extends 'transverselyof the bdx'within its walls and is adapted to`bc^shifted the box. In the ends of this follower are pockcti or `grooves 6 that receive members to be'presently more particularly referred to.
7 designates wedge shaped blocks arranged' in pairs` 1 1. A filing linx having u wnll provided with n (channel, n. pair of wedge blocks loosely mounted in Suid channel und in the channels i` of the Side walls 3, each wedge block having its narrower end opposing the widcrvcnd of the .other wedge block, whereby, vwhen said blocks are moved in .opposite directions in said channels so that the wider 'ends f the blocks are caused to approach eachothen, the blocks will become wedged in the channels, whereas, 'when the blocks are moved in the opposite direction .to partially separate them, the Abinding;l
`action of the wedge blocks in the channels is discontinued and the, blocksmay `be readily shifted Vto,A and:
.fro in the channels. y
` 8 designates rocker blocks provided' wlt'h'slots 9 and 'connectedto the pairs of wedge blocks 7 by pivot pins `in channels of the first described form.
pair of wedge blocks associated with euch other 10. '.lhese rocker blocks serve as controlling members for the wedge blocks and they nre seated in the pockets 6 at the 'ends of the follower in order that they may'be rocked upon thefollowe'rfwhen the follower is vtilted to causo them to throw the wedge blocks intol Wedging or free conditions'in the channels contained by the side walls' of the box.
In the practical use of my filing box, the wedgeblocks 7 aremounted in the channels 4 of the box side walls while in a partially separated or spreadcondition in order that they may be readily introd uccd into the channels and then wedged in the channels. -The follower 5 is then fitted to the rocker blocks by introduclingvit into the box and causing said blocks to enter in'to the pockets at the ends of the follower. lThe wedge blocks now act to hold the follower from movement until said follower is tilted intovthe position shown in dotted lines Fig. IIII to release the wedge blocks from binding action in the channels alter which the follower' may be shifted forwardly or rearwardly desired in the filing box whilethe wedge blocks 'rid-e inlheir respcctiwe channels.
to a desired position, is again locked from movement by placing it in an upright position to renew the we'dging action ofthe wedge blocks.
For the purpose nf providing for the iollowor being moved'entircly to the front end, of the box each of the side wall channels iS widened at its rear und as seen at;
4', Fig. I whereby the wedge blocks are permitted to move upwardly when they reachV the rear ends vof the The follower having been broughtv channels und as 'a consequence, the follower may be brought "directly into of the heir, l
ln Fig.' Vil have Shown a modilication in which I YContact .witlrtho roar end wall provide the ii'eqiuired channels l'or the wedge blocks by applying to each side wall ol' the filing box a channel shaped strip 4" ol' metal instead ol` grooving or slottiiig- Said sidewalls to provide the channels. The wedge blot-ks may be openited in these channel strips with the same efficiency as that inwhiah they are operated I claim otnlly connectingr snit] wedge blocks indepemlently of'ench.
