W1 T/VESSES 2 7? CHESTER F. BROWN, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
eovrsn FOR HATS.
No. ssonee.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Iatented July 9, 1907.
,Application filed May 29,1907. Serial No- 376,369.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Cnns'rnn F. Bnown', a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Hats, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in covers for hats, and the invention has for its object to provide a novel water-proof cover for straw hats.
My invention aims to provide a simple and inexpensive cover that canbe easily and quickly applied to a straw hat, a novel adjustable fastener being used for detachably holding the cover upon a hat. The cover is constructed of light and durable rubber or a simple water-proof material, the cover fitting snugly upon a hat and not interfering with the handling of the same, or presenting an unsightly appearance.
' Detailed construction entering into my invention will be presently described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the hat cover, as placed upon a hat. Fig. 2 cross sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan ol a iastener used in connection with the cover. Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view of the same, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view.
In the accompanying drawings 1. designates the crown of a hat and 2 the rim thereof.
Fitting over the crown 1 of a hat is a piece of waterproof material 3 conforming in size and area to the top of the crown 1. Suitably secured to the underneath edge of the piece of material 3, as at 4, is a band 5 of Water-proof material adapted to cover the sides of the crown 1. I
Suitably secured, as at 6, to the lower edge of the band 1 is a circular piece of water-proof matcri a1 7, covering the top surface of the rim 2 of the hat To hold the piece of material 7 in engagement with the rim 2, and by virtue of said material retain the cover upon the hat, I employ fasteners 8, said fasteners being placed at intervalsupon the under edge of the material 7 to clamp and engage the rim 2 of the hat. Each fastener consists of a piece of metal 9 cut and sheared 'to provide lugs 10, by which the fastener is held in engagement with the material 7, said lugs being forccd through the material and clenched to firmly hold said fastener. The central portionof the plate 9 is cut and depressed to provide guide-ways 11 for awire yoke 12,
having its one end bent downwardly, at 14, to crnbrace the outer edge of the rim 2 of the hat. The wire yokes 12 are adapted to fit snugly in the guides 11, whereby they will be normally held in a stationary position, especially after being pla-red in engagement of the edge of the rim 2.
Since the cover fits snugly upon the hat it will be impossible for the same to become detached, unless the fasteners are released from the rim 2.
The cover can be folded into comparatively small parcel when not being used, and while I have herein described the cover as applicable to straw hats, it is obvious that the same can be used in connection with felt and silk hats.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is.
1. The combination with a hat, water-proof cover adapted to fit thereon, said cover. consisting of u crowned piece of material carried by a band, a circular piece of material secured to said hand and overlying the rim of said hut, fasteners carried by the outer edges of said circular piece or material and adapted to engage the rim-of said hat, each fastener embodying a plate having lugs to engage in said circular piece of material, and guides, and yokes adjustahly mounted in said guides and having their ends bent to engage the rhn of said hat.
2. The combination of a list comprising a crown and a rim of a water-proof covering fitting upon said crown and extending. over the upper surface of said rim, fasteners arranged at intervals upon the outer underneath edges of said cover, each fastener comprising a metallic plate havin a yoke movably mounted thereon for eugaglng the rim) of said hat.
In testimony whereof I nfilx my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
