- My invention relates to penholders and particularly to the class of flexible penholders, that is penholders provided with a exible portion adapted when grasped by the writer, to yield to undue pressure applied at the point of the pen upon the paper and thus relieve strain, and also to yield as-between the undue and irregular pressure applied by the fingers of an unsteady and nervous hand and in so doing to largely absorb the tremor or vibration of such hand with the result of making the Writing less irregular and more intelligible.

Be it known that I, OTTO KAMPFE, a citizen of the vUnited States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn7 ycounty of Kings, city and State of New York, have inl vented an Improvement in Penholders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to penholders and particularly to the class of flexible penholders, that is penholders provided with a exible portion adapted when grasped by the writer, to yield to undue pressure applied at the point of the pen upon the paper and thus relieve strain, and also to yield as-between the undue and irregular pressure applied by the fingers of an unsteady and nervous hand and in so doing to largely absorb the tremor or vibration of such hand with the result of making the Writing less irregular and more intelligible.
In carrying out my invention, I preferably employ a divided stock member, to one part of which the custom ary pen socket is secured, a yielding and flexible medium connecting the said parts of the stock member with their adjacent ends in a spaced apart relation, and means surrounding and supported by the said flexible medium and extending between the said adjacent ends of the parts of the stock member and adapted to be grasped by the hand of the operator in the ,use of the pen.
In the drawing, Figure l is an elevation of a penholder embodying my present invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section ofthe same. Fig. 3 is an elevation of a modied form of penholder. Fig. 4 is a central longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 5 is a partial central longitudinal section of a further modification of my invention.
According to my present invention, the stock member of the penholder is divided into two parts indicated respectively ata, b, in the drawing. To the end of the stock member a, a pen socket c of any desired construction may be secured and this is adapted to receive and support a pen d. I also provide a connecting stem indicated at e, extending between and passing centrally into the adjacent ends of the parts a, b, of the stock niember of the penholder, and these parts are held together in spaced apart relation by said stem e, which may be made of any suitable material of sufficient elasticity to perform the intended functions thereof.
Surrounding the stem. e and supported thereby, I preferably employ a series of bead devices indicated at f. These bead devices are each preferably provided centrally with a hole through which the said stem e is passed and a sulicient number of these bead devices is employedl to extend between the said adjacent ends of the parts a, b, ofthe stock member of the penholder, so that the end bead devices contactrespectively with the faces of the adjacent ends of the said parts a, b, and
with the adjacent faces of the intermediate bead devices contacting with each other.
As will be understood, the stock member of the penholder may be of any desired cross section, and preferably in transverse cross section, the bead devices f corresponding with that given to the stock member of the penholder and as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the adjacent or contacting faces I0 of the said bead devices are curved so as to effect a rolling motion, one upon another, in the yielding of the stem member e caused by the grasp of the operators fingers in using the pen,-or as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, these bead members f may be made spherical, it being understood also that the same may assume other forms in cross section without del parting from the nature and spirit of my invention.
The juxtaposed faces of the respective parts are curved so as to roll upon one another in their yielding function, but I do not limit myself to the arc of the curve employed, and instead of employing the series of beads f as illustrated in Figs. l to 4 inclusive, I may employ as shown in Fig. 5, a single hollow bead member f which is provided with a curved exterior of any configuration and extends between the ends of the parts of the divided stock member, which in this construction, are preferably curved as indicated at l1, and in this as in the other constructions hereinbefore described, the bead member f surrounds and is supported by the stem member e, and is preferably provided with a central bearing l2 fitting closely around the stem e and end apertures I3 through which the stem e passes freely.
I claim as my invention:
l. A penholder comprising a divided stock member,
means for yieldingly connectingr the parts of the said divided stock member in spaced apart positions and a device surrounding and supported by the said means and extend-v ing between the adjacent ends of the parts of the said stock member.
2. A penholder comprising a divided stock member, a pen socket secured to one of the parts of the stock member, means for yieldingly connecting said parts of the stock member, and a series of devices surrounding and supported by the said means and extending between the adjacent ends of the parts of the said stock member.
3. A penholder comprising,l a divided stock member, a
stem of material of good elasticity connecting the parts of the said stock member in spaced apart -positions and a series of devices surrounding and supported by said stem and extending between the adjacent ends of the parts of the said stock member.
4. A penholder comprising a divided stock member, a stem of material of good elasticity connecting the parts of the said stock member in spaced apart positions and a series of beads surrounding and supported by said stem and extending between the adjacent ends of the parts of the said stock member.
5. A penholder comprising a divided stock member, a pen socket secured to one of the parts of the said divided member, a stem of material of good elasticity extending between and connecting the parts of the said stock member in spaced apart positions and a series of beads sur- I rounding and supported by the said Stem extending between the ends of the said parts of the stock member and conforming in transverse section to that of the said stock member and having curved faces which contact with each other and with the adjacent ends of the parts oi the stock member.
