UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. GASKILL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO S. W. EVANS & SON, OF PHILADELPHIA, l?ENNSYLVANIA, (COMPOSED OF SAMUEL W. EVANS, JR.)
UMBRELLA RUNNER AND- TIP-CUP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 9, 1907.
Application filed April 6, 1907- Serl NO- 366,645.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. GAsKILL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Umbrella Runner and Tip-Cup, of which the following is a specification` My invention relates to a new and useful umbrella tip cup and consists of a runner having` means movably mounted thereon for actuating the spring catch and a tip cup movable independent of said spring actuating means.
It further consists of other novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure l represents an elevation showing the device in position on an umbrella stick with a portion of the tips in dotted lines. Fig. 2 represents a central sectional view of the device mounted upon an umbrella stick. i
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings I have found in practice that itis of advantage to mount the tip cup directly upon the runner and in the former runners, which are provided with means for depressing the spring catch, that the tip cup should be mounted to move independently of the depressing means. In the drawings I have shown a construction for accomplishing this result, but it will be evident that other arrangement of the parts may be made and other instrumentalities employed which will accomplish the same result and I do not therefore desire to be limited to the exact construction as herein shown and described and I desire to make such changes as may be necessary.
l designates an umbrella rod or stick which may be of wood, metal or any other desired material and which is provided with the usual spring catch 2 suitably mounted therein, it being understood that the said rod may be solid or hollow and that the catch can be connected therewith in any desired manner and can be of any desired form and construction. Upon the stick is the runner 3 which is provided with the usual slot 4, the walls of which are adapted to engage with the top and bottom spring catches in order that the runner may be held in the open or closed position of the umbrella and said runner is further provided with the notched head 5 for connection with the ribs or spreaders of the umbrella in any desired manner. Adjacent said notched head I preferably provide the knurl 6 and upon the opposite end of the runner I preferably provide the bead`7.
8 designates a sleeve movably mounted upon the said runner 3 which is provided with a bulb formed by the oppositely inclined faces 9 and l0 forming the chamber 11 between said runner and the extended portion or bulb of the sleeve 8, said chamber being adapted to receive the spring catch 2 when in its normal position and said inclined faces 9 and l0 being adapted to Contact respectively with the lower and upper spring catches when the sleeve is properly moved therefor in order to depress said spring and release the runner. It Will be -noted that the bead 7 forms a stop at one end for the movement of the said sleeve and the knurl 6 forms a stop or shoulder for the movement of the said sleeve, at the opposite end of the runner.
l2 designates a collar suitably mounted upon the sleeve 8, the end of which forms a shoulder 13 and movably fitted upon said collar l2 is the tip cup 14 which is provided with the extension or barrel l5 having the inturned end 16 which forms a shoulder it being noted that the inner wall of the extension l5 rides upon the collar l2 while the inturned end 16 rides up on the sleeve 8, so that the tip cup is held in proper position and is adapted to be moved backwards and forwards upon the sleeve S.
17 designates a spring interposed between the shoulder 13 and the inturned portion or shoulder I6, said spring in the present instance being shown as a coiled spring and being adapted to normally hold the tip cup in the position seen in the figures. The stop or shoulder I8 is provided on the sleeve 8 in order to limit the movement of the tip cup in one direction.
The operation of the parts will be readily seen:-
When the tip cup is in the position seen in Fig. l with' the tips of the ribs engaged thereby, the position of the parts will be the same as that shown in Fig. 2 and in order'to release the tips from engagement with the cup 14 bya proper pull thereon the said cup can move on the sleeve 8 and collar l2 overcoming the tension of the spring I7 until the tips can be removed from engagement with the said cup. Then by releasing the cup it will return to the position seen in Fig. 2 and by moving the sleeve 8 upon the runner 3 the inclined face 9 on said sleeve will engage with the spring catch 2 and depress the same releasing it from engagement with the wall of the slot 4 in the runner, which can then be moved along the rod or stick to open the umbrella, the opposite wall of the slot 4 being engaged by another spring catch in order to hold the umbrella in open position.
From the above it will be seen that I provide a convenient and easily operated device serving as a runner and means for operating the spring catches and a tip cup all mounted upon said runner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is z-A 1. In a device of the character described, a runner having a slot therein adapted to receive an umbrella rod spring, a means movable on said runner for depressing the spring, and a tip cup movably mounted with respect to said depressing means.
2. In a device of the character described, a runner having a slot therein adapted to receive the umbrella rod spring, means for depressing said spring, movably mounted on said runnery a Jrip cup, movable with said depressing means and movably mounted with respect to said means.
3. In a device of the character described, a runner having a slot therein adapted to receive the umbrella rod spring, means movably mounted on said runner for depressing the spring, a tip cup movably mounted with respect to said depressing means and yielding means for normally holding said tip cup in proper position on said actuating means.
4. In a device of the character described, a runner having a slot therein adapted to receive the umbrella rod spring, a sleeve movably mounted on said runner and provided wth cam faces for actuating the spring, and a tip cup movably mounted on said sleeve.
5. In a device of the character described, a runner having a slot therein adapted to receive the umbrella rod spring, a sleeve movably mounted onv said runner, cam faces on said sleeve for depressing the spring, a tip cup movably mounted on said sleeve, and a spring for normally holding said tip cup in proper position on said sleeve.
6. In a device of the character described, a runner having a slot therein adapted to receive the umbrella rod spring, a sleeve movably mounted on said runner, a bulb on said sleeve having inclined Walls adapted to depress the.
spring, a collar on said sleeve, forming a shoulder, a tip cup movable on said sleeve and a spring bearing against said shoulder and normally holding said cup in proper position.
7. In a device of the character described, a runner having a slot therein adapted to receive the umbrella rod spring, for the reception of the spring, a sleeve movably mounted thereon, a bulb on said sleeve having inclined walls adapted to depress the spring, a collar on said sleeve, a tip cup mounted on said sleeve having an inturned end, a spring between said collar and said inturned end, and serving to hold said tip cup in its normal position and return it thereto, and stops for limiting the movement of said tip cup.
