PICKER-CHECK FOR Loomis.Y
Specification of Letters Patent.
satented :hay 9, 1907.
Application iiled 12, 1906. Serial No. 316.467.
' ing device adapted to be applied to the lay of a loom,
and operatingas a direct check for the picker-stick.
The invention has lor its object to provide a check which will produce the desired increasing resistance on `the return or backward motion oi the picker-stick and a less resistance on the forward motion thereof, which will prevent rebound, which will be economical with regard to the wear on the stick, and with respect to its own durability, which will he simple in construction and easily replaced, which will require no oil, and
'which will be easily applied and-adjusted.
The present invention relates to that class oi' pickerehecks in which the {rk-tional resistance is applied on a j side of the stick, and it'comprises a plurality oi layers el straps et' leather er its equivalent on each side oi' the path ol' the stick, such layers on each side consisting of a main layer and one or more supplemental layers prof jecting int'o'the palh'oi the picker-stick, the main la ers havinor their, rear or inner ends directl secured to springs disposed substantially in linewith the cheek ing straps.
The nature oi the invention is iully described in detail below, and illustrated in the accompanying draw- Figure l. is airont elevation of one end oi' thelay and adjacent parts oi a loom showing my invention applied thereto, the picker-stick being shown at the end oi' its.
stroke. lFig; 2 is an inverted plan oi the check'removed, showing the stick entering the check during its backward movement. f
`Similar letters oi reiertuufe indicate corresponding parts.
shuttle, d the shuttle-box, c the picker and g the pickerstick--all constructed as usual.
lt represents a double hook-shaped hanger, preferably oi' strong wire, whose hooked end h/ catches over the up-v per edge oi the end ol' the end-iron b. The looped Vlower end o1' this hanger extends intoand under notches 'E in the lower edges of 'a .stout leather' strap which is doubled 'orlolded near the notches into'two equal horizontal parts Each oi' those parts is provided with a horizontal row of vertical slets'n, and caught in these slots are straps p and s, each oi said straps having its ends provided with projecting tongues Il which extend intothe slots as shown, and thereby retain the straps imposition. The straps p and s are not of equal length,
a represents the lay, I) the endiron thereon, c thel the shorter strap p being between the 'strap s and the extent toward orl into thepath of the picker-stick, the innermost strap being'oi course that/Which is tocome `into direct Contact withv the stick.
have their opposite ends caught in the free ends ofthe straps lc, and in suitable eyes w in rods y extending from the loom? on opposite sides of the path of the pickerstiCk. I
In operation, the picker-stick on its backward movewhich it comes into contact, and said straps s press back the strap p #,'and the straps s and p operate diwhich spread tofa greater or less extent, and at the sanie time expand Vto a corresponding degree the spiral ing irictional resistance until approximately the end of the stroke is reached, and then the stick is prevented from rebound. This resistance is regulated according to the conditions, .in two ways, viz., by applying additional supplemental straps to the main strap k, and by placing the ends or tongues of the supplemental straps into holes `which are nearer together, thus causing the straps-to protrude vfarther into the path of the pickerstick. l
pickerfstick but can be regulated to suit different looms, to an exact degree, not only by varying the applying stronger or weaker springs. V
The resistance as the stick starts on its forward movement is very much less than when it is entering the bound.
Having thus i'ully described my invention', what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, iszprsing llexlile main straps on opposite sides of the pickersticlc'nnd supplemental straps extending from said main checkingl its movement by frictionnl contact with the sides ol' the stiek.- i
2. In a picker-check foi looms, u checking device, conlprlsing flexible main sti-nps on opposite sides of the pickel stick provded with a series o1.' slots, and supplemental straps wliose'opposite ends 'are Inserted in .said slots, whereby the supplemental straps extend from the main checking its movement by frlctlonnl contact with the sides of the stick.
main strap 7c. y EachV supplemental strap has its ends or. ,tongues t inserted in holes which are at such a distance apart as to cause the strap to protrude for the desired Spiral springs 'vV ment presses hack thestraps son opposite sides with l rectly by means of their tongues on the main straps c springs o. Thus there isprovided a gradually increas,
It will readily. be seen that in this device the fric# tional resistance is not only on' opposite sides of the' numbers of supplemental straps and the degree of their: projection into the path of the picker-stick, but also by,v
check near the end of its backward movement, .and in. tact is but little more than isy necessary to prevent re straps into the path ofthe picker-stick, for the purpose of' self.
l. ln n mettent-heck for looms, a checking device, cornl sirnps into the pnth oi the picker-stick, for therpnrpose of 3. ln a picker-clieck for looms, a checkingdevice, com K prlsing exibie main straps on opposite sides of the pickerstlck. supplemental straps extending from the main straps into thq path of the picker-stick, and springs connecting the inner ends of the main straps with the lay, for the purpose set forth. Y
f4. In a picke`r-check fior, looms, u checking device, comypxlsing flexible main straps on opposite sides of the pickerstick, supplemental straps extending from the main straps linto the path ot the picker-stick, springs .connecting the in- 'ner ends ofthe main straps ywith the lay, an end-iron secured to said l'ay and a hanger extending from the end.- iron into supporting engagement with the main straps, for the purpose set forth.
Inv testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. 15
