STOPPER FOR HOT-WATER BAGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1907.
Application filed v mber 26,1906. Serial No.345,122.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUY W. CLAYTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mannington, in the county of Marion and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoppers for Hot-Water Bags; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in stoppers for hot water bags and the like.
The object or the invention is to provide a stopper of this character and a socket to receive the same, whereby when said stopper is screwed down tight into the socket an air and water tight closure will be formed for the bag, means being provided in said stopper to permit of air being blown through the same into the bag when the stopper is unscrewed slightly out of engagement with the seat in the bottom of the socket, and whereby a single tiun thereof will again tighten the stopper in the socket to retain the air or water in the bottle.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawingsz-Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a portion of a hot water bag and stopper, showing the construction of the latter; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the stopper removed from the bag; and Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the same.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the bag which may be of the usual or any desired construction to form a hot water bottle or a cushion. Arranged in the neck or mouth of the bag is a metallic socket 2 having formed therein interior screw threads 3. In the lower end of the socket is arranged a seat 4 on which is disposed a packing ring or washer 5, having a central opening in register with the inlet opening 8 formed in the seat 4.
Adapted to be screwed into the socket 2 is a plug or stopper 6 having on its upper end a flattened head 5, which forms a handle by means of which the plug may be readily screwed into and out of engagement with the socket. Formed in the head 5 is a centrally-disposed air passage 6 which extends through the head and to a suitable distance within the body of the stopper and opens at its outer end through the top of the head, as shown. In the body of the stopper is formed a series of inclined passages 7, which open at their lower ends through the inner side of the stopper adjacent to the outer edge of the same and at their upper ends communicate with the passage 6 in the head of the passages 7 will be closed at their inner ends by said washer, thereby preventing the escape of air or water from the bag. By screwing the stopper outwardly to a slight degree sufiicient to disengage the inner end of the same from the washer 5, air may be blown through said passages 6 and 7 andopening 8 to inflate the bag or cushion, and alter suflicient air has been blown into the bag the passages 7 may be quickly closed by a slight turn of the bag or stopper to bring the inner end of the latter again into engagement with the washer, thus preventing the escape of air or water from the cushion.
While I have shown the bag in the form of a hot water bottle, it is obvious that the invention may be applied to any construction of bag to form an air cushion or pillow or a combined water bottle and cushion and will be found to be efiicient and useful for many purposes.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
A device of the class described comprising a receptacle having a month, an internally threaded socket fixed in said mouth and having a bottom wall constituting a seat and provided with an inlet opening, a packing gasket arranged on said seat and having a central opening in register with said inlet opening, and a stopper threaded into said socket and provided with an outwardly opening passage terminating at its inner end in branch passages arranged to diverge from their upper toward their lower ends, the branch passages being adapted when the stopper is in closed position to seat at their lower ends upon and be closed by the packing gasket, said stopper having a fiattened head forming a finger piece and being provided with a laterally-projecting marginal flange designed to seat on the upper end of the socket.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
GUY W. CLAYTON.
