Description

PATENTED 'JULY 2 R. BAIRD. CIGARETTE WRAPPER. APPLICATION FILED JULY 19. 1906.
M ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT BAIRD, OF WEST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
ereannr'rn-wnarrnn.
rette-Wrappers, of which the following is a specification.
y withone hand, then, pour or otherwise locate the tobacco on said blank with the other hand, and then wrap the blank about the tobacco thereon by bringing and securing together its longitudinal edges. To successfully perform this operation to the extent of producing adesirable cigarette requires considerable skill, otherwise more or less trouble is experienced, first, in placing the tobacco upon the wrapper blank without undue spilling of the same; second, in distributing the tobacco uniformly on the wrapper blank for the production of an even or uniformly burning cigarette; and third, in wrapping the blank about the tobacco in a manner to pack the tobacco with the proper degree of density for the production of a cigarette having desirable drawing qualities.
Because of the aforesaid objections attending the usual method of wrapping cigarettes by hand, it has been the object of my invention to. provide an improved wrapper by means of which such objections will be avoided and an unskilled person be enabled to produce a wrapped cigarette superior to one wrappedin the usual manner by a skilled person.
To this end the invention, in one form thereof, consists in providing a tubular wrapper closed at its longitudinal edges and having an enlarged funnel-shaped extension at. one end to permit of the ready filling therethrough of the 'wrapper and which extension is adapted to be removed or separated from t e wrapper subsequent to the filling of the latter. preferably further provided with a means for permitting ready separation of the funnel-shaped extension therefrom on a predetermined line subsequent to the filling operation, and also with a closing wall at the end opposite its filling end to facilitate uniform filling of the wrapper throughout its length and without undue loss of tobacco.
Referring to the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention,-Figure l is a view of two separated blanks which, when secured together at their longitudinal edges, provide my improved wrapper. Fig. 2 is a sideview of the complete wrapper filled with tobacco. Fig. 3 is a similar view with the funnel-shaped filling end detached. Figs. 4and 5 are opposite end views of Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed July 19, 1906. Serial No. 326,821.
The rapper is Patented July 2,1907,
general shape shown in Fig. 1, consisting of the elongated body portion 2 having parallel edges and the upper end portion 3 having outwardly diverging edgeswhereby, when the two blanks are secured together at their longitudinal edges, the body portions 2 will provide the wrapper proper of usual cylindrical shape for containing the tobacco and the widened end portions 3 will provide an enlarged funnel-shaped filling end or extension through which the tobacco may be readily and conveniently fed into the wrapper proper.
The fastening together of the blanks in the formation of the complete wrapper may be effected :in any desired manner, a simple and convenient means being to provide one of each pair of blanks with an adhesive coating adjacent to its edge, as indicated at 4 in Fig. 1, by means of which the blanks may be adhesively united.
In filling the wrapper, the tobacco will be poured through the enlarged funnel-shaped end or extension and suitably packed into the wrapper proper by any suitable means, such for example, as an ordinary lead pencil which most-persons carry and which is usually of the proper size to enter the said wrapper proper.
In order that the tobacco may be packed to a desired degree of density throughout the entire length of thewrapper and without any loss of the same, the lighting end of the wrapper or that end opposite the filling end is preferably formed with a closing wall 5 and which wall is preferably provided with perforations 6 to permit of a draft through the cigarette and facilitate its initial lighting.
After the wrapper has'been filled with tobacco its funnel-shaped filling end or extension is adapted to be detached therefrom and as a means of assuring such detachment or separation on apredetermined line the wrapper may be perforated on such line, as indicated at 7' in Figs. 1 and 2.
The wrapper will also preferably be provided with a mouth-piece 8 which may be formed of any suitable moisture-proof substance'or material,- suchzas paraflin ne1 shaped extension adapted to be detached from the wrapper subsequent to the filling thereof.
2. A cigarette wrapper having at one end thereof a funnel-shaped extension and 3.10 having means for permitting separation of said extension from the wrapper on a predetermined line.
3. A cigarette wrapper having at one end thereof a funwrapper, and also having'a relatively stiff section terminel-shaped extension and also having a series of pertoi-a- 'nating at theiine of juncture of the wrapper with said tions for permitting separation of said extension from the extension.
